Is the 2023 RAM 2500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a truck that feels solid value for towing and utility, and it also highlights the kind of power and comfort that can make long-term ownership feel worthwhile. The expert testing notes that the Cummins turbodiesel delivers effortless surge and that the truck’s robust frame and refined road manners support confidence in everyday use. Ram also says the truck’s advanced trailering and camera tech can make ownership easier when you’re hauling or maneuvering.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that some owners have raised concerns about the transmission, so a careful test drive and service-history review matter.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 RAM 2500?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission, steering feel, and any signs of hard towing or off-road use. Focus on cabin wear, entry and exit wear points, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the seller’s description.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Rebel’s look and feel is defined by its aggressive styling, blacked-out appearance, 20-inch wheels, and crew-cab/6-foot-4-inch bed setup, while the safety content shows that advanced driver-assistance systems were available rather than universally standard. That means you should confirm the exact equipment on the truck you’re shopping, especially if you want the full ADAS suite.
• Powertrain: The standard 6.4-liter V8 makes 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, while the available 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six makes 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. The V8 is the better choice if you want maximum towing and payload, while the diesel is the torque-heavy option if you value effortless pulling and better efficiency.
• Safety package: Ram offers automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking including trailer-brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also offers blind-spot cameras and a digital rearview mirror, so check whether those features are present on the specific truck you’re considering.
• Infotainment: The truck uses a next-generation Uconnect 5 system with a 12-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L, and navigation. It also offers a 12-inch digital instrumentation panel, and the tech package can include a 17-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA does not provide fuel economy estimates for this heavy-duty truck, but the test truck’s trip computer showed 19.1 mpg on mostly highway driving, 16.1 mpg on a mountain route, and 14.7 mpg with off-roading. The 6.4-liter V8 returned 10.3 mpg on the same route and conditions.

Which 2023 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 RAM 2500 is offered in 1 trim level: Rebel.

Here's the short version:

The Rebel is the one to buy if you want the most distinctive mix of off-road capability, towing ability, and upscale feel in this model year. It adds the aggressive Rebel-specific look, a standard 6.4-liter V8, and available Cummins turbodiesel power, while also bringing useful trailering and camera tech. It suits you best if you want a heavy-duty truck that feels more refined than a pure workhorse but still has real capability.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 RAM 2500?

• Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,755 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.97% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $48,174, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $48,174 sits slightly below last year's $52,921.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also mean future resale gains are more limited if depreciation continues. For a seller, the current trend means pricing competitively will matter, especially if your truck lacks the desirable equipment buyers want. Strong condition, clean history, and the right feature mix should help your listing stand out.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Ram offers a broad ADAS suite on this truck, including automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with trailer-brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also offers blind-spot cameras and a digital rearview mirror, which can help when you’re towing or changing lanes. One caveat from the expert review is that crash-test ratings don’t exist for this heavy-duty truck.

Should I buy a 2023 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.97% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The expert review highlights impressive off-road capability, a powerful turbodiesel engine option, and a spacious, comfortable cabin.

The bottom line: The 2023 RAM 2500 makes the most sense if you want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, a comfortable cabin, and a market that currently favors careful shoppers. If you’re price-sensitive, the softer pricing and decent deal availability make this a good year to target; if you want the broadest feature set and the strongest value, compare carefully against nearby model years before you buy.
