Is the 2023 RAM 2500 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 RAM 2500 earns a 4.2/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its power, comfort, towing utility, and the available technology and luxury touches. The overview also points to a truck that fits buyers who want serious capability without giving up space and everyday livability.

The main trade-offs are the flimsy-feeling column shifter and difficult entry and exit, plus the expensive turbodiesel option. That makes it a strong fit if you want a heavy-duty truck for towing, utility, and comfort, but less ideal if you want the simplest or cheapest ownership experience.

Good and great deals account for 35.2% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 RAM 2500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a truck that many people find dependable for power, comfort, and utility, with repeated praise for its ability to meet towing and work needs. It also suggests that the truck’s technology and luxury features are part of the appeal, while reliability concerns are more likely to center on the transmission.

The test-drive notes reinforce that this is a robust heavy-duty truck with a strong frame and a capable powertrain, which supports confidence in day-to-day durability. Still, used buyers should pay close attention to service history and any signs of drivetrain wear, since long-term ownership risk is most likely to show up there.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 RAM 2500?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the drivetrain, steering feel, and cabin condition, since the truck’s size, capability, and equipment can hide wear that matters later. Focus on how the truck was used, especially if it was asked to tow or work hard.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Rebel has a crew-cab configuration with a 6-foot, 4-inch cargo bed, a Rebel-specific grille, 20-inch wheels, and a more aggressive blacked-out look. It skips the Power Wagon’s graphics, 17-inch wheels, and integrated winch, so you should compare whether you want the Rebel’s broader appeal or the more specialized Power Wagon-style hardware.
• Powertrain: The standard 6.4-liter V8 makes 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque, while the available 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six makes 370 hp and 850 lb-ft. The V8 is the better choice if you want the truck’s maximum towing and payload ratings, while the diesel is the torque-rich option if you value effortless pulling and better efficiency.
• Safety package: The available driver-assistance suite includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking including for trailer brakes, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also offers standard surround-view and forward-view cameras, plus blind-spot cameras and a digital rearview mirror on the infotainment display.
• Infotainment: A 12-inch digital instrumentation panel is available, and the truck uses the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, and navigation. The system also supports a 17-speaker Harman Kardon premium sound system, and the available camera and trailer tools add useful visibility and towing support.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA does not provide fuel economy estimates for this heavy-duty truck, but the test model’s Cummins diesel returned 19.1 mpg on mostly highway driving, 16.1 mpg on a mountain route, and 14.7 mpg off-road. The 6.4-liter V8 was observed at 10.3 mpg under the same route and conditions.

Which 2023 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 RAM 2500 is offered in 1 trim level: Rebel.

Here's the short version:

The Rebel is the trim to focus on if you want the 2500’s off-road capability without going all the way to the more extreme Power Wagon formula. It adds the Rebel-specific look, a crew-cab body, a 6-foot, 4-inch bed, and the choice of a standard V8 or available Cummins turbodiesel, so it gives you a broad mix of capability and everyday usability.

If you want the best-value path, the standard V8 is the smarter starting point because it delivers the truck’s maximum towing and payload ratings and keeps the price from climbing as quickly as the diesel does. The Cummins makes sense if you care most about torque and refinement under load, but it is a costly upgrade.

The available safety and camera technology is a strong plus, especially if you plan to tow or maneuver in tight spaces.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 RAM 2500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to compare listings carefully and move quickly on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 5,572 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 85.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $47,626, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $47,626 sits slightly below last year's $51,447.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale will depend heavily on how well the truck holds its current market position. If prices stabilize, a well-kept example should remain attractive to shoppers who want heavy-duty capability with comfort and technology.

The truck’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, especially among buyers who want towing utility and a more refined heavy-duty experience. That kind of appeal can help cushion resale value over time.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 RAM 2500 safe?

The 2023 RAM 2500 does not have crash-test ratings listed here.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ram offers a broad ADAS suite on this truck, including automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with trailer-brake support, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The truck also adds useful camera tech, including standard surround-view and forward-view cameras, plus blind-spot cameras and a digital rearview mirror.

The main caveat is that crash-test ratings are not available here, so you should lean more heavily on the available driver-assistance hardware and your own inspection of the truck’s condition. If you plan to tow often, the trailer-brake and camera features are especially valuable.

Should I buy a 2023 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2023 model year brings the new Rebel, plus updated camera and trailering tech that make the truck easier to live with.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of capability, comfort, and updated equipment, the 2023 is the right year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-priced truck with the equipment you need rather than chasing the newest badge.
