How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 10.32% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,213 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

It’s aimed at you if you want a flagship luxury sedan that blends traditional comfort with a new electrified powertrain for 2023. The overview points to standout technology, premium interior materials, and strong performance, while the expert review highlights the same strengths and adds that the plug-in hybrid setup gives you a modern middle ground if you want to reduce fuel use without going fully electric.

The main trade-offs are clear: it’s very expensive, and it doesn’t qualify for the federal tax rebate. That means the value case depends on how much you prioritize the S-Class experience and the added flexibility of the plug-in hybrid system.

Only 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective rather than broadly discounted.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The overview and expert review both frame this S-Class as a polished, high-end luxury sedan with a sophisticated new powertrain for 2023. The plug-in hybrid setup is presented as a practical bridge for you if you want electrification without giving up a gas engine, and the expert review describes the powertrain as excellent overall.

The performance write-up also points to smooth transitions in hybrid driving, seamless shifts from the nine-speed automatic, and a ride that stays composed over broken pavement. That said, the review notes a slight jerk when the transmission downshifts into first gear at lights, which is a small flaw in an otherwise strong setup.

The cost-effectiveness section adds that the hybrid battery is covered by a six-year/60,000-mile limited warranty. For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is that this is a complex, expensive luxury hybrid, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any car you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a luxury hybrid with advanced electronics and a complex powertrain. Focus on overall condition, because the S-Class is built around expensive comfort, technology, and refinement that can be costly to restore if neglected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680. The standard S-Class emphasizes calm sophistication, while the tester’s optional black trim, AMG-style exterior pieces, and upgraded wheels make it look less staid. The interior stands out for its leather choices, trim materials, panoramic sunroof, and superb fit and finish.
• Powertrain: The 2023 S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a battery and electric motor. It delivers 56 miles of all-electric range, 51 MPGe combined, and 510 horsepower when the gas engine joins in.
• Safety package: The S-Class includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The review does not call out a trim-level safety gap.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.8-inch OLED center display with MBUX, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented-reality navigation, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and a standard Burmester sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is rated at 51 MPGe combined and can travel 56 miles on electricity alone. The review also notes 53.9 mpg during testing and 23 mpg combined once the battery is depleted.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, Maybach S 680.

Here's the short version:

• S 500: This is the entry point if you want the S-Class experience with the least expensive path into the lineup. It gives you the core flagship luxury feel, and it’s the trim to start with if you care most about comfort and prestige rather than maximum output.
• S 580: Choose this if you want more power and a stronger luxury-sedan feel without stepping all the way into Maybach territory. It’s the better-value upgrade if you want the richer performance side of the S-Class formula.
• Maybach S 580: This is for you if rear-seat luxury and a more exclusive presentation matter most. It sits above the standard S-Class trims and is aimed at buyers who want the most upscale version of the car.
• Maybach S 680: Pick this if you want the top of the range and are willing to pay for the most lavish interpretation of the S-Class. It’s the most indulgent choice in the lineup.

The safety content does not identify a trim-level safety gap.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,213 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 89.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $76,170, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $76,170 sits slightly below last year's $84,939.

That decline suggests the market has moved in your favor if you’re buying now, but it also means a future seller may face softer pricing than owners saw a year ago. If you plan to resell later, the current trend points to a market that rewards well-kept examples more than average ones.

Because the year-round low and current average are the same, the market appears to have already adjusted downward. That can help you as a buyer today, but it also means resale upside may be limited unless your car is especially clean and well equipped.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can keep the car centered, maintain distance, and even handle lane changes when you signal.

That said, the review also notes that some advanced safety and driver-assist systems may be part of option packages in this class of vehicle. For a used buyer, that means you should confirm the exact equipment on the specific car you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
• The 2023 adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and a modern electrified experience.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $61,720, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $76,170 average.
• It offers a traditional luxury-sedan setup with a mild-hybrid gas powertrain and strong comfort.

The bottom line: Choose the 2023 if you want the newer electrified powertrain and are comfortable paying more for it. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the smarter path because it delivers the S-Class experience at a lower average price.
