How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 11.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,239 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

You’re looking at a luxury full-size sedan that leans hard into premium materials, advanced tech, and a new plug-in hybrid powertrain for 2023. The S-Class is aimed at buyers who want a high-end sedan with strong electric driving capability without going fully battery-electric, and the cabin presentation backs up that mission with a polished, upscale feel.

Trade-offs: It’s very expensive, and it doesn’t qualify for the federal tax rebate. The expert notes also point out that its overall fuel economy and total range are less impressive than the electric range alone might suggest.

There are 36.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a refined, well-engineered luxury sedan with a strong emphasis on comfort and advanced powertrain integration. The expert evaluation describes the plug-in hybrid setup as smooth in operation, with seamless transitions between electric and gas power in Hybrid mode.

The powertrain is also described as excellent overall, with the transmission working quietly in the background and the air suspension soaking up rough pavement with ease. That said, the expert notes a slight jerk at times when the car downshifts into first gear at lights.

The hybrid battery is covered by a six-year/60,000-mile limited warranty, which helps reduce some early ownership risk for used buyers. For long-term ownership, you should still budget carefully for maintenance and repair costs because this is a complex, high-end plug-in hybrid.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the car’s equipment and charging hardware match the listing. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a luxury plug-in hybrid, since you’ll want to confirm that the powertrain, electronics, and suspension are all operating as intended.

Focus on overall condition, service records, and whether the car has the options you actually want, since this model can vary a lot in equipment and price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard full-size S-Class emphasizes calm sophistication, while the tester’s optional black trim, AMG-style body pieces, and 20-inch wheels make it look less staid. Inside, the cabin can be specified with multiple leather colors and trim materials, so you should check whether the car has the upscale interior presentation you want.
• Powertrain: The S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 28.6-kWh battery and an electric motor. It delivers 56 miles of all-electric range, 51 MPGe combined, and 510 horsepower with 553 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: The S-Class includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can keep distance and lane position, and it can change lanes after you signal.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.8-inch OLED center display, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented-reality navigation, wireless charging, and a Burmester sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates it at 51 MPGe combined, and the expert test recorded 53.9 mpg during evaluation. When the battery is depleted, it returns 23 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, Maybach S 680.

Here's the short version:

• S 500: This is the entry point if you want the S-Class experience with the least expensive path into the lineup. It should suit you if you care most about the core luxury, ride quality, and flagship feel rather than the most powerful setup.
• S 580: This is the better choice if you want more performance and a stronger all-around luxury sedan without stepping into the ultra-luxury Maybach territory. It’s the best-value trim for most shoppers who want the classic S-Class formula.
• Maybach S 580: Choose this if you want a more exclusive, chauffeur-style version of the S-Class with a stronger emphasis on rear-seat luxury and prestige.
• Maybach S 680: This is the top-end choice if you want the most lavish and powerful version of the lineup.

The safety package includes hands-on highway driver assist, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,239 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.78% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $77,528, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $77,528 sits slightly below last year's $87,879.

That drop suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can help you get more car for your money today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect depreciation to remain a meaningful factor, especially given the S-Class’s high original price and luxury-car positioning.

If you buy well now, you may be able to limit some of the downside by targeting a lower-priced listing and keeping the car in excellent condition. The strongest resale outcomes will likely come from well-equipped examples with clean history and desirable options.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The S-Class comes with a long list of driver-assistance features, including lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can maintain distance, stay centered in its lane, and even handle lane changes after you signal.

One caveat is that these advanced systems are part of the car’s broader luxury-tech appeal, so you should verify that any used example has the features you expect and that they function properly.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.78% compared with last year.
• The 2023 adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain and impressive electric range.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $62,702, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $77,528 average.
• It offers a full-size luxury sedan with strong refinement, premium materials, and two traditional mild-hybrid powertrain choices.

The bottom line: If you want the newer plug-in hybrid setup and stronger electric-driving capability, the 2023 is the better target. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2022 is the smarter value play.
