Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag. It is presented as a reminder of how capable a compact car can be in everyday use, and the hatchback body style adds helpful cargo space along with a rear liftgate for extra versatility. Mazda’s stated aim is to deliver luxury-level performance and cabin quality without the luxury price, and this car is described as punching well above its weight in that regard.
What makes it especially appealing is the combination of an upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. Those strengths give the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a small car. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view.

The car had all my desired features and more. This was a nicer trim that I originally set out for but the price point was cheaper than some of the other guys at a couple steps down!

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — 4/5 from owners and 8.17/10 from our experts point to a strong overall showing. The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is presented as a compact car that delivers luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the luxury price, and the hatchback body style adds helpful cargo space along with a rear liftgate for extra versatility. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
That premium feel is backed up by sharp, refined handling and acceleration, plus an upscale interior that helps it punch above its weight. The trade-offs are real, though: the infotainment system is maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view. For you, that means this is a smart pick if you value driving enjoyment and cabin polish more than tech simplicity or rear visibility. Good and great deals make up 34.8% of listings, so there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is described as a refined, engaging compact car that balances luxury-like comfort with everyday usability, and its driving experience is a major strength. Its performance tuning emphasizes communicative steering, balanced cornering, and a ride that stays comfortable for the daily commute.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, and the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder adds much more torque if you want stronger acceleration. The car’s overall character suggests solid durability potential if you keep up with maintenance, but the complicated infotainment setup and rear visibility issue can make long-term ownership less satisfying for some used buyers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.6% — always verify the vehicle history report. You should still check the report carefully, because the hatchback’s design can hide visibility-related compromises that matter in daily driving. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the rear visibility setup, infotainment operation, and whether the car’s features match the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, with automatic transmission and AWD standard.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard 8.8-inch display is controlled by a rotary dial rather than touch input, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also offers two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control, with navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo on higher-spec models.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with front-wheel drive returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 2.5 S gives you the essentials, but you miss out on blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the more upscale cabin and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Preferred is the best value if you want the Mazda3’s upscale feel without jumping too far in price, because it adds a moonroof, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
- Premium/top trim: The 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus is the most complete choice, adding back premium equipment along with reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims here are aimed at off-road use.
The Select trim is the first one that adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, so it’s the minimum trim I’d target if safety convenience matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting huge discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,257 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.49% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,082.66, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,935 sits slightly above last year's $21,949. That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The Mazda3’s premium feel and strong driving dynamics should help it stay appealing to used shoppers who want something more refined than the average compact car.
Because prices are already above last year’s level, a clean, well-equipped example is more likely to hold attention than a neglected one. If you’re planning to sell later, choosing a desirable trim and keeping mileage, condition, and history in check should help you preserve value.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts. The standard safety suite includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The big caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a serious blind spot and makes rear visibility a real concern. The infotainment layout can also distract you because it takes extra attention to operate. For you, that means the Mazda3 has a strong safety feature set on paper, but you should pay close attention to visibility and ease of use during your test drive.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.49% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It delivers luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,023, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,935 average.
- It adds a Carbon Edition and reinforces the Mazda3’s upscale feel.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,769, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,935 average.
- It offers a rare mix of body styles, drivetrains, and engines in a compact-car package.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of premium feel, driving enjoyment, and current-market availability, the 2023 is the best all-around choice. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 both undercut the current-year average, so either can make sense if you find the right condition and equipment.
