Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag. It is presented as a reminder of how capable a compact car can be in everyday use, and the hatchback body style adds helpful cargo space along with a rear liftgate for extra versatility. Mazda’s stated aim is to deliver luxury-level performance and cabin quality without the luxury price, and this car is described as punching well above its weight in that regard.
What makes it especially appealing is the combination of an upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. Those strengths give the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a small car. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view.

The car had all my desired features and more. This was a nicer trim that I originally set out for but the price point was cheaper than some of the other guys at a couple steps down!

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — 4/5 from users and 8.17/10 from expert testing. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is positioned as a compact car that delivers luxury-level comfort and refined performance without a luxury-car price. Its hatchback body style adds helpful cargo space and a rear liftgate, so you get extra everyday versatility along with the upscale cabin and sharp handling.
The trade-offs are real: the infotainment system is frustrating to use, and the massive rear pillar hurts rear visibility. Even so, the car’s refined driving feel and premium interior make it a strong fit if you want a small car that feels more special than most mainstream rivals.
33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is described as a car that blends strong everyday usability with a refined driving experience, and that combination usually matters for long-term ownership confidence. Its base engine and available turbo setup are both presented as capable, and the car’s overall execution suggests a well-developed platform rather than a rushed one.
The most relevant dependability note is that the car’s strengths are tied to its mechanical and chassis polish, while its biggest weaknesses are in technology and rear visibility rather than core durability. For used buyers, that means your long-term risk is less about the powertrain and more about living with the car’s frustrating interface and blind-spot-heavy design.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free status is not the same as a clean mechanical inspection. Prioritize a test drive that lets you evaluate visibility, infotainment usability, and how the car feels in daily driving. Pay close attention to cabin condition and any signs that the tech or driver-assistance systems have been poorly maintained or modified.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features like dual-zone climate control, synthetic leather, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather, so base-trim shoppers should be sure the equipment level matches your expectations.
- Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter inline-four makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. A turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is also offered, making 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, with automatic transmission and AWD standard.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Select adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8.8-inch display that is not a touchscreen and is controlled by a rotary dial. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system also offers two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with front-wheel drive returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core Mazda3 experience with the 8.8-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, pushbutton start, and keyless entry. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but you should be comfortable living without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
- Select: This trim adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery. It is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds meaningful everyday comfort without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Preferred: This one brings a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver and are willing to pay for comfort upgrades.
- Carbon Edition: This trim builds on the midrange formula with unique styling elements. It is the pick if appearance matters most and you want a more distinctive look.
- Premium: This trim adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. It is the right choice if you want the most polished non-turbo experience and a more premium cabin.
- 2.5 Turbo: This trim adds the more powerful engine, but it gives up some equipment found on the Preferred, including navigation and premium leather. Choose it if performance matters more than feature count.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top trim and adds back features such as reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features. It is the best fit if you want the most complete Mazda3 package.
The Select trim is the best-value sweet spot for most used buyers, while the Turbo Premium Plus is the one to target if you want the fullest safety and convenience content.

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,306 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.54% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,087.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,678 sits slightly above last year's $22,116.
That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. For a future seller, that’s a useful sign that demand has remained steady rather than collapsing after the first year of ownership.
The price trend also points to a model that shoppers still value for its upscale feel and strong driving dynamics. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, you should have a decent chance of preserving a respectable share of your purchase price.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Mazda3 comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Moving up to the Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The biggest safety concern is the massive rear pillar, which creates a large blind spot in the hatchback. The infotainment layout can also distract you because it is difficult to use intuitively, which means you may take your eyes off the road more often than you should.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 2.54% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale comfort, sharp handling, and hatchback versatility.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,384, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,678 average.
- It adds Carbon Edition flair and reinforces Mazda’s upscale feel.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,609, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,678 average.
- It broadens the lineup with more body-style and drivetrain flexibility.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-market availability, premium feel, and proven appeal, the 2023 is the main path to consider. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 both sit below the current average and are worth cross-shopping closely before you decide.
