Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag. It is presented as a small car that punches well above its weight, with an upscale interior and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. For shoppers who have been focused on small SUVs, it also serves as a reminder that a compact car can still be highly practical for everyday life.
The hatchback version adds to that appeal with helpful cargo space and a rear liftgate, giving it SUV-like versatility in a smaller footprint. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the infotainment system is described as maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view. That mix of polish, usefulness, and a few notable compromises is what makes the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 distinctive.

The car had all my desired features and more. This was a nicer trim that I originally set out for but the price point was cheaper than some of the other guys at a couple steps down!

The Good: Interior looks great, exterior looks great. Oil pan plug and filter are very easy to access. Sound system is great (thanks bose). Media center knob is better than a touch screen. Manual transmission + snow tires makes this car one of the best Ive had in New England winters traction-wise. Good gas mileage. The Bad... THE WHOLE THING RATTLES on the interior and Mazda will not address it. They cannot guarantee it is a warrantee issue and will not look at the car w/o assessing the hourly shop fees, even though the car is well within warrantee . Car is just over a year old with <20k miles and rattles worse than the 22 y/o CRV it replaced. Engine is very underpowered and turbo charger is not available w/manual shift transmission. The key fob is annoying beyond words, the car seemingly decides when it will/wont lock which is a fun feature. Shift knob leather is very cheap and is already peeling from normal use. Rear window visibility is almost non-existent even with a hatchback. Heads up display cannot be disabled permanently, has to be shut off every time. Windshield spray goes everywhere but the windshield. Windshield washer fluid low warning takes over entire speedometer, seems safe. No heated mirrors in the premium package you are forced to buy to get the manual transmission. Unlock button on the rear hatch does not work for the passenger doors. First new car Ive ever owned and cant say I would buy another Mazda again based off of this experience. Again, aesthetically Mazda is not challenged by many other brands in this price range. However, the quality of the vehicle is definitely not what I came to expect from anecdotal evidence nor what I read online prior to purchase.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is positioned as a small car that delivers luxury-level comfort, an upscale interior, and refined performance without a premium badge. It also makes a strong case for everyday practicality, especially in hatchback form, where the added cargo space and rear liftgate give you SUV-like usefulness in a smaller footprint.
The main trade-offs are the maddening infotainment system and the massive C-pillar that hurts rear visibility. If you want a compact car that feels more polished and engaging than most rivals, this one fits that brief well.
Good and great deals make up 32.9% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is built around a refined driving experience, with strong steering feel, composed handling, and a comfortable ride that supports daily use. Its performance tuning suggests Mazda prioritized durability in the way the car behaves on the road, not just straight-line speed.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, and the turbocharged version adds substantial torque while still using a conventional automatic transmission and AWD. The most efficient setup is the non-turbo engine with FWD, which returns 31 mpg combined.
If you plan to keep one long term, the biggest ownership risk is less about the powertrain and more about living with the car’s frustrating tech and visibility compromises.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a thorough inspection, especially if you’re considering a hatchback. Pay close attention to visibility, infotainment usability, and overall condition, since those are the areas most likely to affect day-to-day satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch display, while higher trims add features like dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. The base trim is the most stripped-down, so it’s the one to scrutinize most closely if you want a richer cabin experience.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four with 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, plus an available turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. The non-turbo setup is the efficiency play, while the turbo is the stronger choice if you want more punch.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert arrive on the Select trim, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. It is not a touchscreen, and the interface can be frustrating to use, so test it yourself before you commit.
- Fuel efficiency: The base FWD setup returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. AWD with the non-turbo engine returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Mazda3 experience with the standard infotainment setup, keyless entry, pushbutton start, and the basic safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price, but it is the most bare-bones choice.
- Select: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds 18-inch wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the best balance of comfort and safety upgrades, this is the one to target.
- Preferred: This trim adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without jumping to the pricier upper trims.
- Carbon Edition: This trim builds on the midrange formula with unique styling elements. It is the pick if appearance matters most to you.
- Premium: This trim adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. It is the right choice if you want the most polished non-turbo setup.
- 2.5 Turbo: This trim brings the more powerful engine, but it gives up some equipment found on the Preferred, including navigation and premium leather. Choose it if performance matters more than feature count.
- 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top trim and adds back premium equipment along with reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system. It is the most complete version if you want the fullest safety and convenience package.
The Select trim is the best-value choice, and the Turbo Premium Plus is the one to buy if you want the most advanced safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,317 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.37% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 85.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $22,671 sits slightly above last year's $21,931.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s mix of style, refinement, and driving enjoyment. If prices continue to hold near the current average, you may have a decent runway for resale strength as long as the car stays in clean condition.
The strongest resale candidates will be well-kept examples with desirable trims and a clean history report. Cars that present as upscale, well maintained, and easy to live with tend to stay more appealing to future shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
It comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Moving up to the Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
The biggest safety caveat is the massive C-pillar, which creates a serious blind spot in the hatchback. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it takes extra attention to operate.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.37% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends luxury-like comfort with refined performance and hatchback practicality.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,430, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,671 average.
- It adds a Carbon Edition debut, a new paint color, and a standard wiper de-icer on Turbo models.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,527, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,671 average.
- It offers a broader range of configurations and a more premium-feeling driving character.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of style, driving enjoyment, and everyday usefulness, the 2023 is the primary target. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 and 2024 both deserve a look because they can cost less while still delivering much of the same appeal.
