Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating, which lines up with its upscale interior, sharp handling, and refined acceleration. The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by bringing luxury-level comfort and refined performance without the premium price tag, and it is presented as a small car that punches well above its weight.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is maddening, and the massive C-pillar obstructs the rear view. That means you get a compact car that can still feel practical for everyday life, especially in hatchback form, but you should be ready to live with a couple of frustrating compromises.

Good and great deals make up 37.8% of listings, so there is still some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is described as delivering luxury-level performance and cabin quality without the luxury price, which usually points to a well-executed ownership experience. Its refined driving character and comfortable daily-commute manners also support the idea that it is built to feel satisfying over time.

If you buy used, the main long-term risk is living with the car’s weak points every day, especially if you value easy tech use and outward visibility.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a thorough inspection, especially if you are considering a hatchback. Focus on visibility, infotainment usability, and overall condition, because the car’s biggest drawbacks are tied to day-to-day livability rather than outright mechanical weakness.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5 S starts with 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims add features such as 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, paddle shifters, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery, so base-trim shoppers should check whether the equipment gap fits your needs.
• Powertrain: The base 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four makes 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive available. A turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is also offered, making 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, with automatic transmission and AWD standard.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8.8-inch display controlled by a rotary dial rather than touch input, and it includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also offers two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control, while higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with front-wheel drive returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With all-wheel drive, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo-four with all-wheel drive returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined in the hatchback.

Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the value starting point if you want the Mazda3’s core design, standard safety tech, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto without stretching the budget.
• Select: This is the best-value step up if you want a more complete everyday setup, thanks to 18-inch wheels, dual-zone climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, synthetic leather upholstery, and added blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
• Preferred: Choose this if you want a more comfortable and upscale feel, since it adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals.
• Carbon Edition: This trim is for you if styling matters most, because it builds on the Preferred with unique styling elements.
• Premium: Pick this if you want the richer cabin and convenience upgrades, including paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery.
• 2.5 Turbo: This is the choice if you want the stronger engine and more urgent performance, though it gives up some equipment found on the Preferred.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the most complete package, since it adds back features such as navigation and premium leather, along with reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features.

The safety package expands as you move up the lineup, with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert on the Select and more advanced driver-assistance features on the Turbo Premium Plus.

• Deal availability: 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,321 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.60% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 84.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,083, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $22,451 sits slightly above last year's $21,882.

That upward move suggests the market still sees value in this model year, which can help support resale strength if you buy well and keep the car in good condition. The year-round range also shows that pricing has room to move, so a clean, well-equipped example should remain easier to sell than a neglected one.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes standard with forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Moving up to the Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

The main caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a large blind spot and can make rear visibility a real issue. The infotainment layout can also be distracting because it is not touch-operated and can be frustrating to navigate.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 2.60% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It pairs luxury-like cabin quality with sharp, refined handling and hatchback practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $21,050, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,451 average.
• It blends style, driving enjoyment, and a more upscale feel than many mainstream compact cars.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $21,438, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,451 average.
• It offers a wide range of configurations and excellent driving dynamics with a more premium character.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of style, driving enjoyment, and everyday usefulness, the 2023 is the primary pick. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2022 is worth a look for a lower entry cost, while the 2024 is the better alternative if you want a newer-year option with similar premium appeal.
