How much does the 2023 Land Rover Defender cost?

Prices have softened 13.89% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,767 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of used Defenders to compare.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender a good car?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is a mixed but appealing choice if you want a distinctive SUV with real capability and a premium image, and your 3/5 user rating lines up with that split verdict. It earns an expert rating of 7.2/10.

The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

The Defender’s appeal comes from its classic style, wide customization, and broad mix of body styles and powertrains, including the extended Defender 130 for added practicality. The trade-offs are clear: the cabin is too utilitarian, body roll is a drawback, and it can feel like poor value for money once the price climbs. If you want something unconventional with off-road-ready personality and luxury-adjacent presence, it fits that brief well; if you want a more polished on-road luxury SUV, you may want to look elsewhere.

39.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s meaningful room to shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender reliable?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is built around durability and capability, with a rugged mission that still comes through in its construction and hardware. Its off-road focus, solid structure, and excellent build quality support the case for long-term toughness.

The Defender’s performance setup includes permanent four-wheel drive, Terrain Response 2, and available air suspension, all of which help it handle demanding terrain with confidence. The cabin is designed to resist wear and stains, and the standard equipment list includes useful everyday features that reduce friction in ownership.

If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that its complexity and premium positioning can make repairs and upkeep more expensive than you might expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or heavy towing. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, suspension, tires, and underbody, since the Defender’s appeal depends heavily on condition and equipment. A careful test drive should also confirm that the drivetrain, brakes, and steering feel consistent and free of odd noises or vibrations.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Defender 110 starts with manual fabric seats and a no-name stereo, while the S adds heated 12-way power seats with leather and a Meridian stereo. The SE brings fog lights, half-circle daytime running lights, surround sound, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, auto high beams, and cooled front seats, while the X-Dynamic SE adds silver exterior accents, black rear tow hooks, and Robustec trim details.
• Powertrain: The Defender offers turbocharged inline-six and supercharged V8 engines, plus a turbocharged four-cylinder that is best suited to local driving. The mild-hybrid inline-six uses a 48-volt system and an electric supercharger for quicker low-speed response, while the V8 delivers the strongest performance.
• Safety package: Lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking are standard. The X trim adds adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, a larger touchscreen, a rearview mirror with a camera display, air suspension, a locking rear differential, and an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system.
• Infotainment: The Defender comes with a standard 10-inch touchscreen, with an optional 11.4-inch screen available. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a voice assistant, connected apps, and navigation are standard, and the larger screen is easier to read.
• Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder is rated at 17 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined, while the six-cylinder returns 18/23/20. The V8 is rated at 14/19/16.

Which 2023 Land Rover Defender trim should I buy?

The 2023 Land Rover Defender is offered in 4 trim levels: 110, 90, 130, and X.

Here's the short version:

• 110: This is the best-value starting point because it gives you the lowest entry price in the lineup and the most practical four-door layout. If you want the Defender experience without stretching into pricier trims, this is the one to start with.
• 90: Choose this if you want the shorter two-door body style and a more compact footprint. It suits you best if style and maneuverability matter more than rear-seat and cargo practicality.
• 130: Pick this if you want the most space and the added practicality of the extended four-door body. It is the right choice if you want the Defender’s character with more room for people and gear.
• X: This is the most feature-rich trim, adding air suspension, a locking rear differential, an upgraded Terrain Response 2 system, adaptive cruise control, a head-up display, the larger touchscreen, and a rearview mirror with a camera display. It is the trim to consider if you want the most capability and equipment in one package.

The X trim also brings the most advanced safety and convenience equipment in the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Land Rover Defender?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 39.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,767 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.89% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $51,532, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Land Rover Defender's resale value?

The current average of $51,532 sits slightly below last year's $59,846.

That price movement suggests the Defender has softened enough to help you buy more selectively today. If you plan to sell later, the current market shows that values can move meaningfully, so condition, mileage, and trim choice will matter a lot when it’s time to trade in or list privately. A well-kept example with desirable equipment should hold up better than a higher-mileage truck with visible wear.

Is the 2023 Land Rover Defender safe?

The Defender scored five of five stars in Euro NCAP crash testing and was praised for its solid structure.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and automatic emergency braking are standard, and the available 360-degree camera system can even show a “clear” view under the front wheels. A head-up display and an optional digital instrument panel add more visibility, and trailer-reversing steering assist is available. One caveat is that the Defender comes with six airbags, which is fewer than you might expect for a vehicle in this class.

Should I buy a 2023 Land Rover Defender or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 39.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 13.89% compared with last year.
• It adds the Defender 130, bringing more practicality to the lineup.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $42,943, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $51,532 average.
• It adds an expanded trim lineup and new tech updates.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $56,847, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $51,532 average.
• It broadens the lineup with more trims and features.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the sweet spot if you want the Defender’s updated lineup and broader practicality without paying more for the next model year. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want the newest additions and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade route.
