Why it stands out
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In stands out first for its redesign. Kia gave the Niro dramatic new styling and a revamped interior for the 2023 model year, and the plug-in hybrid version also gets more power and electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV. It is part of a lineup that keeps hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and all-electric powertrains, making the Niro unusual in the U.S. market because it is the only vehicle sold there with those three powertrain options.
That appeal is balanced by a few practical drawbacks. The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is described as spacious and stylish, with a great warranty, but it is also noted for sluggish performance, not much cargo space, and the lack of all-wheel drive. Owner feedback reinforces the appeal of its tech features, comfortable ride, and efficiency, while also echoing concerns about cargo storage.
This analysis is based on CarGurus' proprietary market data from September 14, 2026, CarGurus experts' opinions, and generative AI.

Very comfortable, quiet, energy-efficient car that will save money by running mostly on electricity rather than gas.

This car is amazing, tech is easy to use, driving is really nice. Great turning radius. Haven’t really done lots of highway yet. I bought the EX model ( basic) because that’s all that was available, aside from missing a few cosmetic upgrades and sunroof, this car has all the engine and tech of more expensive models AND the tire size cost half of the SV model which for those of us who need snow tires is a nice break!! A quality vehicle, tighter drive and specs than Toyota and Ford. The ev experience is wonderful, combustion engine remains in the background until needed . Some other PHEV brands seem to run the combustion engine too easily. Too bad about the fed tax credit, certainly would help sell more!!

I just got this car a few days ago and I love it! The smart driving assist is comparable to that of Tesla. The auto hold feature is so smart as well. Great purchase!

Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — you rate it 5/5, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the tech features, comfortable ride, and interior space, and many also call out the efficiency and electric-mode performance as highlights. The trade-offs are clear: the driving experience is described as sluggish, and cargo storage is a recurring concern.
For you, that makes the 2023 Niro PHEV a strong fit if you want a stylish, compact plug-in hybrid with a modern cabin and a practical everyday feel, especially if you value efficiency and tech over quick acceleration or maximum cargo flexibility. Good and great deals make up 36.7% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they feel confident in the car’s efficiency and everyday dependability.
The expert review reinforces that sense of easy ownership by describing the powertrain as familiar and straightforward, with a conventional driving feel that should be easy to live with over time. Kia’s 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile limited warranty add another layer of reassurance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the car’s cargo limitations and modest performance will still suit your needs after the novelty wears off.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report, verify service records, and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with signs of heavy use. Focus especially on cabin condition, infotainment operation, and cargo-area wear, since the car’s practicality is one of the main reasons to buy it.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The EX and SX Touring are the two plug-in hybrid trims, and the Touring package adds 18-inch wheels and other features. The base setup already brings a lot of the Niro’s design and cabin appeal, so you should compare equipment carefully before paying more for the higher trim.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid uses a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, a more powerful electric motor, and an 11.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It makes 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel drive only.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assist features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, blind-spot collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and navigation-based curve prediction. Highway Driving Assist II, which adds automated lane centering, is optional.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Digital Key 2.0 compatibility with select Apple and Samsung devices.
- Fuel efficiency: Kia expects 33 miles of all-electric range with the standard 16-inch wheels.
Which 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: EX and SX Touring.
Here's the short version:
- EX: This is the trim to start with if you want the best value. It gives you the core plug-in hybrid experience, the redesigned cabin, the standard 10.25-inch touchscreen and digital cluster, and the full suite of standard driver-assistance features. If you want the Niro’s style, efficiency, and tech without stretching the budget, this is the one to target.
- SX Touring: Choose this if you want the more upscale, better-equipped version and are willing to pay for it. It builds on the same plug-in hybrid foundation but sits at the top of the range, so it’s the trim to consider if you care most about getting the most content and the most premium-feeling Niro PHEV.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but Highway Driving Assist II remains optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 98 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 91.8% of listings are accident-free.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In safe?
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In’s crash-test ratings were not available at the time of publication.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, blind-spot collision avoidance, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, and navigation-based curve prediction. Highway Driving Assist II, which adds automated lane centering, is optional.
Should I buy a 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 36.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 redesign brings dramatic new styling, a revamped interior, and more power and electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Niro PHEV with the strongest mix of style, tech, and owner satisfaction, the 2023 model is the clear starting point. If you’re more price-sensitive, you should still compare listings carefully and focus on condition, because the value case depends on finding a well-priced example rather than assuming every car is a bargain.
