Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In stands out first for its redesigned look. Kia gave the Niro dramatic new styling for the 2023 model year, and the plug-in hybrid version also received a revamped interior along with the rest of the Niro lineup. That fresh design helps the Niro feel more distinctive than a typical plug-in hybrid crossover, and it is part of what gives the model its appeal.
Beyond the styling, the 2023 Niro PHEV is notable for being one of three powertrain choices in the Niro family, alongside hybrid and all-electric versions. The plug-in hybrid also brings more power and electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV. Buyers looking for a practical small crossover may also appreciate its spacious cabin and strong warranty.
There are tradeoffs, though. The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is described as sluggish, and it does not offer all-wheel drive. Cargo space is also limited, which may matter to shoppers who want more utility from a crossover.

Very comfortable, quiet, energy-efficient car that will save money by running mostly on electricity rather than gas.

This car is amazing, tech is easy to use, driving is really nice. Great turning radius. Haven’t really done lots of highway yet. I bought the EX model ( basic) because that’s all that was available, aside from missing a few cosmetic upgrades and sunroof, this car has all the engine and tech of more expensive models AND the tire size cost half of the SV model which for those of us who need snow tires is a nice break!! A quality vehicle, tighter drive and specs than Toyota and Ford. The ev experience is wonderful, combustion engine remains in the background until needed . Some other PHEV brands seem to run the combustion engine too easily. Too bad about the fed tax credit, certainly would help sell more!!

I just got this car a few days ago and I love it! The smart driving assist is comparable to that of Tesla. The auto hold feature is so smart as well. Great purchase!

Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In a good car?
Yes — 5/5 owners rate the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In, and CarGurus experts give it a 7.17/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the tech features, comfortable ride, and space inside, and many also call out the vehicle’s efficiency and performance in electric mode. On the other hand, the expert review notes that it can feel sluggish, and the lack of all-wheel drive is a real trade-off if you want more traction or year-round versatility.
That mix fits you best if you want a practical small crossover with a distinctive design, a roomy cabin, and plug-in hybrid efficiency rather than sporty acceleration or rugged utility. With 40.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s also a decent amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a vehicle that feels reliable, efficient, and trouble-free enough that many drivers are happy with it over time.
The expert review reinforces that dependability angle by describing the powertrain as familiar and easy to live with, with a conventional-feeling dual-clutch setup and simple drive-mode choices. Kia’s 10-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty and five-year, 60,000-mile limited warranty also help reduce ownership anxiety.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about durability and more about whether the car’s limited cargo space and modest performance will still suit your needs after the honeymoon period.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report, verify that the plug-in charging equipment and infotainment functions work properly, and pay close attention to interior condition because this model’s cabin is a big part of its appeal. It’s also smart to inspect cargo-area usability carefully, since shoppers have noted storage limitations.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The EX and SX Touring are the two trims, and the Touring package adds 18-inch wheels and other features. The base trim gives you the core Niro PHEV experience, while the higher trim is the one to target if you want more equipment and a more upscale feel.
- Powertrain: The plug-in hybrid pairs a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a more powerful electric motor and an 11.1-kilowatt-hour battery pack. It makes 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, and it is front-wheel drive only.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assist features include forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and blind-spot collision avoidance. Standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction is also included, while Highway Driving Assist II with automated lane centering is optional.
- Infotainment: You get a 10.25-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Digital Key 2.0 is also available for compatible devices.
- Fuel efficiency: Kia expects an all-electric range of 33 miles with the standard 16-inch wheels.
Which 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In trim should I buy?
The 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In is offered in 2 trim levels: EX and SX Touring.
Here's the short version:
- EX: This is the trim to start with if you want the lowest entry price and the core plug-in hybrid package. You still get the key efficiency, tech, and safety features that define the Niro PHEV, so it makes the strongest case as the value pick.
- SX Touring: Choose this if you want the more upscale version and are willing to pay more for the added equipment and the Touring package content, including 18-inch wheels.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but Highway Driving Assist II remains optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In?
This looks like a buyer-friendly market if you’re ready to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 40.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 94 listings available.
- Clean inventory: 90.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,506, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assist equipment is extensive, including forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a driver attention monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, safe exit warning, rear occupant alert, and blind-spot collision avoidance. You also get standard adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and navigation-based curve prediction, while Highway Driving Assist II with automated lane centering is optional.
Crash-test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication, so you should lean more heavily on the standard safety equipment and any inspection findings when shopping used.
Should I buy a 2023 Kia Niro Hybrid Plug-In or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 40.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model brings a redesigned look, a revamped interior, more power, and more electric range than the previous-generation Niro PHEV.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Niro PHEV with stronger styling, improved electric range, and a well-liked ownership experience, the 2023 is the clear target. If price matters most, you can still shop aggressively within this year because the market shows meaningful deal availability and a healthy share of accident-free listings.
