CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Jeep Compass
overall

Summary
With 8,282 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,667, 34.8% of 2023 Jeep Compasses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Jeep Compass 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Jeep Compass stands out because Jeep gave its small crossover a meaningful mechanical upgrade. A new turbocharged engine is standard, and the model also now has standard all-wheel drive, a more sophisticated transmission, and additional safety features. Those changes address one of the Compass’s long-running weaknesses and make this version feel more modern and more capable than before.
Even with those improvements, the Compass is not an automatic value pick. The test-drive notes call out poor value for the money, poor visibility, and a cramped back seat. Still, its stylish design and impressive technology help it remain appealing, and owner feedback echoes that appeal by praising the upgraded interior, larger touchscreen, and user-friendly feel.

Reviewed a 2023 Jeep Compass on Jul 8, 2023
The 2023 Jeep Compass is nothing short of an impressive upgrade to its predecessor, exemplifying Jeeps commitment to listen and respond to customer feedback. However, despite the undeniable improvements, it seems that Jeep has merely taken a half-step with the power upgrade, failing to live up to the level of progress weve seen elsewhere in the vehicle. First things first, lets applaud Jeeps design team. The 2023 Compass boasts an evolved aesthetic that keeps the spirit of the original, but its clearly a more refined, modern version. The bold grille, sleeker LED headlamps, and a more streamlined silhouette add an element of sophistication that previously eluded this model. Its the kind of vehicle that is as comfortable on urban streets as it is on rugged country trails. Inside, the Compass delivers a solid punch with an upgraded infotainment system, larger 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital drivers display that clearly takes cues from higher-end siblings in the Jeep family. The revamped interior not only appears more luxurious, but is also more intuitive, with a user-friendly layout and comfortable seating for all. Safety, one of Jeeps core principles, is also significantly improved in the 2023 Compass. With enhanced advanced driver-assist technologies such as Lane-Keeping Assist, Forward Collision Warning, and an improved Blind-Spot Monitoring System, the Compass confidently keeps up with modern safety standards, offering peace of mind on both city and off-road drives. Yet, the Achilles heel of the 2023 Jeep Compass lies under its hood. Jeep has indeed made updates to the powertrain with a new 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, now delivering 180 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque. While this is an improvement over the previous model, the boost feels more like a small step rather than the giant leap this vehicle needed. The engine struggles to deliver swift acceleration, making it feel underpowered compared to competitors in its segment. On the highway, the Compass does reasonably well but could benefit from a bit more oomph during overtaking. Similarly, when the road gets rough and tumble, the Compass, despite its four-wheel-drive capabilities, leaves the driver wishing for just a bit more gusto under the pedal. In summary, the 2023 Jeep Compass is undoubtedly a commendable upgrade that showcases Jeeps commitment to its customers. With an elegant design, improved interior, and enhanced safety features, its a solid choice for anyone seeking a compact SUV. However, when it comes to the all-important power, Jeep still has some way to go. It feels like the brand stopped short of delivering the kind of powertrain that would elevate the Compass from being good to being exceptional. We cant help but feel that Jeep missed an opportunity here to make the Compass a true segment leader. Thus, were giving it a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars, leaving room for that essential engine improvement that would complete the package.

How much does the 2023 Jeep Compass cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,646 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,637 |
| Year-Round High | $23,399 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,398 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.22% |
Prices have softened 3.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,218 listings available, which suggests you should have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Jeep Compass earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the stylish design, upgraded interior, and improved safety features, and they also like the larger touchscreen and user-friendly feel. The Compass’s standard all-wheel drive and more modern cabin help it feel more capable and more appealing than earlier versions.
The trade-offs are the poor value for the money and the cramped back seat, along with visibility concerns noted in testing. For you, that means the Compass makes the most sense if you want a compact SUV with a more upscale presentation and strong tech, not if your top priority is maximum space or bargain pricing.
The market looks reasonably open, with 35.1% of listings classified as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people can count on for an upgraded interior, improved safety features, and a more user-friendly overall experience. That kind of feedback matters because it suggests the Compass is delivering the day-to-day dependability shoppers want from a used SUV.
The test-drive notes also describe the new turbocharged powertrain as quieter, smoother, and more refined, with a transmission that shifted flawlessly. Jeep’s three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance through Jeep Wave also helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the Compass still has some value and packaging compromises, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, electronics, and cabin condition, since the Compass’s appeal depends heavily on how well those systems have held up. Focus especially on visibility-related wear, interior condition, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the base Sport to Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, and High Altitude. The base Sport misses automatic high-beam headlights, while higher trims add more upscale equipment and the Trailhawk is the one aimed at exploring off the beaten path.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. Jeep tuned it for fuel economy and regular fuel use, and the official combined rating is 27 mpg.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a drowsy driver detection system, and a rear-seat reminder system. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, traffic sign recognition, front and rear parking sensors, and Highway Assist are available, with Highway Assist offered on Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude.
- Infotainment: Every Compass gets a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless Android Auto, Bluetooth for two devices, SiriusXM, connected services, Wi-Fi access, Alexa Skill support, and over-the-air updates. Depending on trim, you can also get a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, embedded navigation, a nine-speaker Alpine sound system, and Alexa Built-in.
- Fuel efficiency: The official combined figure is 27 mpg, and the test vehicle returned 23.8 mpg in mixed driving.
Which 2023 Jeep Compass trim should I buy?
The 2023 Jeep Compass is offered in 8 trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited, Trailhawk, Altitude, Red, and High Altitude.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, but it misses automatic high-beam headlights and is best only if you want the lowest starting point.
- Latitude: This is the trim most buyers should start with because it adds more equipment without pushing the price as high as the upper trims.
- Latitude Lux: This is the better-value upgrade if you want a more upscale feel and more features without jumping all the way to the pricier models.
- Limited: This is the most polished mainstream choice, with the upscale cabin, available Highway Assist, and the strongest blend of comfort and tech.
- Trailhawk: Choose this if you want the most off-road-focused Compass, with low-range AWD, Rock mode, skid plates, recovery hooks, and extra ground clearance.
- Altitude: This is a style-based step up from Latitude Lux, so it suits you if appearance matters more than capability.
- Red: This is a Limited-based special edition, so it makes sense if you want the Limited’s equipment with a distinct look.
- High Altitude: This is the top-end luxury-leaning choice, but it is hard to justify unless you specifically want the most upscale version.
The safety package is strongest on trims above the base Sport, since automatic high beams are standard on all but the Sport.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Jeep Compass?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without feeling rushed.
- Deal availability: 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,218 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,637, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Jeep Compass's resale value?
The current average of $22,646 sits slightly below last year's $23,398.
That decline suggests the Compass has already moved through some of its near-term depreciation, which can help future sellers if prices stabilize. If you buy at the right number, you may have a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to trade or sell.
The current market also shows a fairly tight year-round range, which can support resale if you keep the vehicle in strong condition. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Jeep Compass safe?
The 2023 Jeep Compass earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, and NHTSA results were not published at the time of review.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver assistance includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, drowsy driver detection, and a rear-seat reminder system. Automatic high-beam headlights are standard on all but the base Sport trim, and Highway Assist is available on Trailhawk, Limited, and High Altitude.
The main caveat is that the IIHS result was incomplete for this model year, so you should still check for updated crash-test information before buying.
Should I buy a 2023 Jeep Compass or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Jeep added a new turbo engine, standard AWD, and more safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $21,049, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $22,646 average.
- It feels more upscale inside and emphasizes premium materials and Jeep identity.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $21,109, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $22,646 average.
- It keeps the powertrain upgrade and adds strong value in the base trim.
The bottom line: If you want the most improved Compass in this group, the 2023 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 and 2024 both undercut it on average price, so you should compare condition and equipment closely before deciding.
