CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Honda Pilot
overall

Summary
With 3,066 currently listed for sale and an average price of $37,481.00, 33.0% of 2023 Honda Pilots for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Honda Pilot 4.42 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
84.9% of 2023 Pilot models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Honda Pilot stands out as a fully redesigned midsize three-row crossover with a more rugged appearance, more power, and more thoughtful convenience items than before. It aims to blend everyday comfort with a more adventurous personality, and that combination helps explain why it is positioned as one of the stronger choices in a highly competitive class. The available TrailSport model adds to that appeal by giving the Pilot an off-road-capable version for buyers who want a little more capability from their family SUV.
Beyond its new look, the 2023 Pilot is appealing because it emphasizes comfort, useful tech features, and plenty of cargo space. Those strengths make it easy to imagine as a family hauler that can handle both daily errands and longer trips. The tradeoff is that fuel economy is only average, and some owners also felt the engine performance and infotainment system were less impressive than they wanted, which keeps the Pilot from being an outright class leader in every area.

It's nothing fancy, but for an 8-seater, it's comfortable, drives really nice, and isn't a gas guzzler.

The LX is a base model Pilot. No bells & whistles if that's what you want. Which is what I wanted. The only options I would've liked on it would've been remote start & electric seat adjustments. Other than that I'm content with it.

How much does the 2023 Honda Pilot cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $37,370 |
| Year-Round Low | $36,879.12 |
| Year-Round High | $39,779.50 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $39,767 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.03% |
Prices have softened 6.03% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,173 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $36,879.12, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Honda Pilot a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.42/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating, which points to broad appeal with a few clear compromises. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the Pilot for its spaciousness, comfortable ride, and room for up to 8 passengers. The review summary also points to its aesthetic appeal and family-friendly roominess, while the overview frames it as a strong fit for everyday comfort, longer trips, and buyers who want a more adventurous personality.
The trade-offs are straightforward: some owners felt the engine performance was lacking, especially for torque, and the infotainment system drew criticism for being underwhelming. The expert notes also call out merely average fuel economy and steering that feels a bit too light and detached on the highway.
With a good mix of comfort, cargo space, and useful tech, the Pilot makes the most sense if you want a three-row family SUV that can handle daily life without feeling plain. It also sits in a market where 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Honda Pilot reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free feel through its emphasis on spaciousness, comfort, and family use, which usually matters when you’re planning to keep a vehicle for the long haul.
The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by describing the Pilot’s controls and advanced safety systems as functioning as they should, with no false alarms during testing. That kind of everyday consistency is a good sign if you want a used SUV you can count on.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about a single glaring flaw and more about making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained well and hasn’t been worn down by family-duty mileage.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Honda Pilot?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on interior wear, infotainment operation, and how smoothly the powertrain responds in normal driving. Since this is a family SUV, condition matters most in the places you’ll use every day: seats, cargo area, controls, and safety systems.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The TrailSport adds a one-inch taller ride height, unique 18-inch wheels, chunky all-terrain tires, and underbody skid plates, while the interior remains more functional and versatile than before. Base trims miss some of the convenience and tech upgrades that make the Pilot easier to live with.
- Powertrain: You get an all-new 3.5-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard on most models, while all-wheel drive is available across the lineup and standard on the Elite and TrailSport.
- Safety package: Honda Sensing includes forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic-jam assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. EX-L and higher trims add low-speed automatic braking plus front and rear parking sensors, while TrailSport and Elite add surround-view and multi-view camera systems.
- Infotainment: Step up to at least the EX-L trim if you want the larger infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, and USB ports in every row. Higher trims add a multi-view camera system, while Touring and Elite bring navigation, Bose premium audio, remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. AWD drops to 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the TrailSport returns 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Honda Pilot trim should I buy?
The 2023 Honda Pilot is offered in 6 trim levels: LX, EX, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, Elite.
Here's the short version:
- LX: This is the entry point, but it’s mainly for shoppers who want the lowest starting price and are willing to give up the convenience and tech upgrades that make the Pilot easier to live with.
- EX: This is the first step up if you want a more complete family SUV without jumping too far in price, though the data points you toward the EX-L if technology matters to you.
- EX-L: This is the best-value trim. You get the larger infotainment touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless phone charger, USB ports in every row, a power liftgate, leather upholstery, a universal garage door opener, second-row sunshades, and the key safety and tech upgrades.
- TrailSport: Choose this if you genuinely want the off-road-capable version. It adds the rugged hardware and TrailWatch camera system, and it makes the most sense if you plan to explore moderately challenging terrain.
- Touring: This is the better pick if you want more luxury and long-trip convenience, including navigation, Bose premium audio, remote monitoring and control via a smartphone app, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Elite: This is the top choice if you want the most equipment, including standard AWD, a head-up display, a fully digital instrument panel, and the most complete camera setup.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but EX-L and higher trims add low-speed automatic braking and parking sensors, while TrailSport and Elite get the surround-view and multi-view camera systems.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Honda Pilot?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,173 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $36,879.12, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Honda Pilot's resale value?
The current average of $37,370 sits slightly below last year's $39,767.
That softer pricing suggests the Pilot is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly, which can help you negotiate now but may temper near-term resale upside. Even so, the model’s broad family appeal and strong utility should help it stay relevant with used shoppers.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, the Pilot’s combination of space, comfort, and practical features should support steady demand later. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Honda Pilot safe?
The 2023 Pilot received a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard Honda Sensing features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, traffic-jam assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, a traffic sign reader, automatic high beams, and a driver attention monitor. EX-L and higher trims add low-speed automatic braking plus front and rear parking sensors, while TrailSport and Elite include surround-view and multi-view camera systems.
In testing, the advanced safety features behaved well and the adaptive cruise control maintained gaps smoothly. If you plan to use the TrailSport off pavement, you may want to disable some proximity warnings and low-speed automatic braking so they don’t react to obstacles too aggressively.
Should I buy a 2023 Honda Pilot or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.42/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Fully redesigned for 2023 with a more rugged appearance, more power, and an off-road-capable TrailSport model.
The bottom line: If you want the redesigned Pilot with stronger styling, more power, and a better mix of comfort and capability, the 2023 is the one to target. If your priority is simply getting the lowest possible price and you’re willing to give up some of the redesign’s appeal, a nearby older year may be worth a look.
