What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the truck’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you want advanced tech, a diesel powertrain, or a higher-trim truck with more complex features. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and signs of hard use, since this model can be loaded with equipment that’s expensive to sort out later.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Pro keeps things simple with a 7-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, Bluetooth, and remote keyless entry, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The SLE brings heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a digital instrument panel, while the Denali Ultimate adds nearly every feature available, including massaging front seats and a premium audio setup.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel, a 5.3-liter V8, or a 6.2-liter V8. The diesel is the efficiency leader, and the gas turbo-four and V8s cover the rest of the lineup with different mixes of power and efficiency.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and Teen Driver. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, Safety Alert Seat, and Super Cruise.
• Infotainment: The base Pro uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get a 13.4-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The updated system also includes Google-connected apps and a logical layout, though it can feel busy.
• Fuel efficiency: The Duramax turbodiesel with RWD returns 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined. With 4WD, it returns 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The gas turbo-four returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the 5.3-liter V8 returns 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the simplest choice, and it makes sense if you want the most straightforward Sierra with the carryover infotainment setup, a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, cloth seats, and Bluetooth. It’s the trim to consider if you value basic truck functionality over luxury features.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a larger touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and a digital instrument panel. It gives you a big jump in comfort and tech without moving all the way into luxury pricing.
• Elevation: This trim builds on the SLE and makes certain options and packages available, so it suits you if you want a more customized setup without jumping to the upper trims.
• SLT: This is the first trim that clearly leans upscale, adding leather upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, memory settings, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. It’s a good fit if you want more comfort and a more premium cabin feel.
• AT4: This is the off-road-oriented choice, with standard 4WD, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter. It suits you if trail capability matters more than luxury polish.
• AT4X: This is the most serious off-road model in the lineup, with steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, mud-terrain tires, additional skid plates, upgraded dampers, and locking differentials. Choose it if you want the most rugged Sierra setup.
• Denali: This is the luxury trim that adds unique styling, a Bose premium audio system, ventilated front seats, wireless charging, and a bed-view camera. It’s the right pick if you want a premium truck without going all the way to the top.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the flagship and the most fully equipped choice, with massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose system, unique interior details, 22-inch wheels, and an integrated Kicker sound system in the tailgate. It’s the one to buy if you want the most luxurious Sierra experience.

The safety package starts with core driver aids on every trim, while the most advanced features are reserved for higher trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to find value.

• Deal availability: 38.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,716 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.79% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 91.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $44,702, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $44,702 sits slightly below last year's $49,555.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re thinking about future value, the current softness means your purchase price matters more than usual. Buying well below the average gives you a better cushion against depreciation.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 safe?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and Teen Driver. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, Safety Alert Seat, and Super Cruise hands-free highway driving.

The main safety caveat is that several advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s included on any used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 38.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.79% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It adds a luxury-leaning Denali Ultimate trim and strong diesel performance.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $41,641, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,702 average.
• It brings a major makeover with bolder styling, a more lavish interior, and new high-end trims.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $47,744, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,702 average.
• It broadens the truck’s versatility with a well-executed mix of work, off-road, and luxury appeal.

The 2023 is the best all-around pick if you want the strongest balance of price, features, and luxury ambition. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the smarter value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer model-year alternative.
