What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Ford F-150?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or heavy-use miles. Focus on overall condition, because the F-150 can be configured and equipped in many different ways, and wear can vary a lot from one example to another. It’s also smart to verify that the features you want are actually present, since equipment can change substantially by trim and option package.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans regular, extended, and crew cab body styles, with eight core trims ranging from XL to Raptor. The XLT Heritage Edition adds two-tone paint, unique cloth seat inserts, and exclusive 75 Years interior details, while the base work-truck end of the range is much simpler.
• Powertrain: The truck offers numerous engine choices, including the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the test truck. Ford says maximum towing reaches 14,000 pounds and maximum payload reaches 3,315 pounds, but capability depends heavily on configuration.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 includes automatic high beams, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic reverse braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, intersection assist, and speed-sign recognition. Some advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on every trim.
• Infotainment: Sync 4 brings a 12-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, over-the-air software updates, and voice recognition. It also includes SiriusXM 360L and FordPass Connect with a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The test truck averaged 17 mpg in testing, and the EPA estimate cited for it was 19 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Ford F-150 is offered in 8 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Tremor, Raptor, Raptor R.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-truck starting point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the lineup and do not need the richer feature content found higher up.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the core tech and convenience features that make the F-150 feel modern, including Sync 4 with a 12-inch touchscreen and wireless smartphone integration.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and are willing to pay for additional comfort and equipment beyond the XLT.
• King Ranch: This is for buyers who want a more premium, distinctive cabin and are shopping the F-150 as a luxury-leaning truck.
• Platinum: Pick this if you want a high-end F-150 with a more polished presentation and richer feature content.
• Tremor: This is the better fit if you want a more rugged setup and are interested in off-road-oriented capability.
• Raptor: This is the performance-focused choice if you want the most aggressive off-road character short of the Raptor R.
• Raptor R: This is the extreme halo model, with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8, 700 horsepower, 640 pound-feet of torque, R-tuned Fox live-valve shocks, and standard 37-inch all-terrain tires.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is the key safety package to look for, and some advanced features are not standard on every trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Ford F-150?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 26,232 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.49% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $40,833, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $40,833 sits slightly below last year's $43,205.

That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and configuration rather than just model-year age. Trucks with desirable equipment and strong maintenance history should hold up better than heavily used examples with visible wear.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Ford F-150 safe?

The F-150 SuperCrew earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), coupled with a four-star rollover resistance rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic high beams, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic reverse braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, intersection assist, and speed-sign recognition. The test truck’s surround-view camera is also especially useful when parking.

One caveat is that some of the assistance systems can feel a bit aggressive or overly active in tighter driving situations, so you may need to override them at times.

Should I buy a 2023 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year adds the Raptor R and XLT Heritage Edition, broadening both performance and value-focused appeal.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $44,913, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $40,833 average.
• It adds an updated BlueCruise system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2023 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and inventory is plentiful. If you want the newer model-year updates and are willing to pay more, the 2024 is the better path.
