overall

Summary
With 8,125 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,074, 32.2% of 2023 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Ford Escape stands out as a compact crossover with a long history, but it now feels somewhat overshadowed by Ford’s newer Bronco Sport. Even so, it still sells well in a competitive field, and its available up-powered engine gives it an advantage for shoppers who want extra passing speed. It also brings an impressive array of safety and infotainment technology, along with an upscale, handsome design that helps it feel more modern than its age might suggest.
At the same time, the 2023 Ford Escape is not without drawbacks. It may feel a bit cramped for some shoppers, and it is priced on the higher end of the segment. The interior materials can feel cheap, and wind noise is another weakness. Even with those compromises, it remains appealing for buyers who value comfort, strong available performance, and a tech-forward approach in a practical SUV.

Absolutely love this car! I have been so impressed by the way this vehicle handles, such a smooth ride. Due to chronic back issues, had to have a car with lots of seat adjustments…this one is perfect! I can adjust it so many ways and with the lumbar support, makes it that much more comfortable. Highly recommend the 2023 Ford Escape Active!

How much does the 2023 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,041 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,776 |
| Year-Round High | $24,218 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,216 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.85% |
Prices have softened 4.85% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,124 listings available, which suggests you should have a healthy range of options to compare.
Is the 2023 Ford Escape a good car?
Yes — with a 5/5 user rating and an 7.17/10 expert rating, the 2023 Ford Escape lands as a strong pick for many used-SUV shoppers. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its performance, interior comfort, and modern features. They also highlight the spaciousness, smooth handling, and commendable fuel efficiency. On the downside, the expert review notes that it may feel a bit cramped and that it is priced on the higher end of the segment.
For you, that means the Escape makes the most sense if you want a practical compact crossover with a tech-forward cabin and available extra passing power. It is less compelling if you prioritize maximum space or the lowest purchase price.
With 32.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners especially appreciating the SUV’s long-term appeal, comfort, and practicality. The expert review also describes the Escape’s brakes as predictable and linear, and its suspension as soft and compliant, which supports easy day-to-day driving.
Ford also includes a helpful first scheduled maintenance visit on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well and kept in good condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Ford Escape?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. Prioritize a close inspection of the interior materials, cabin wear, and road noise, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction. It is also worth confirming that the features you want are actually present, because equipment varies meaningfully by trim.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim starts the lineup, and the higher trims add a more upscale look, larger wheels, and richer cabin materials. The ST-Line Elite test vehicle had 19-inch wheels, body-color mirror caps, wheel-arch cladding, and diamond-stitched leather upholstery, while the lower trims are more basic inside.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder with 180 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. The stronger engine is paired exclusively with AWD and is better for passing and merging.
- Safety package: Every trim includes Co-Pilot360 with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Co-Pilot360 2.0 adds adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, lane-centering technology, and a surround-view camera.
- Infotainment: Lower trims come with an 8-inch touchscreen, while all trims can be equipped with a 13.2-inch screen, which is standard on the Platinum and ST-Line Elite. Sync 4 supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and native navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The ST-Line Elite returns 23 mpg city, 31 highway, 26 combined. A 1.5-liter FWD Escape returns 27 mpg city, 34 highway, 30 combined.
Which 2023 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2023 Ford Escape is offered in 5 trim levels: Active, ST-Line, ST-Line Select, Platinum, and ST-Line Elite.
Here's the short version:
- Active: This is the entry point if you want the Escape’s core design, standard safety tech, and a lower starting price without paying for the more expensive powertrain or luxury touches.
- ST-Line: This is the best-value trim if you want a sportier look and a step up in style without jumping too far in price.
- ST-Line Select: Choose this one if you want the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the stronger passing power that comes with it.
- Platinum: This trim is the better choice if you want a more upscale feel and the larger 13.2-inch screen as standard.
- ST-Line Elite: This is the most fully equipped version, with the strongest engine, standard 13.2-inch display, and the richest cabin presentation.
Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 2.0 is the upgrade to look for if you want the more advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Ford Escape?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,124 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.85% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,776, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $23,041 sits slightly below last year's $24,216.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the softer pricing trend means you should expect some depreciation pressure if you plan to trade in soon. Even so, the Escape’s broad appeal and steady demand help keep it relevant in the used market.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Ford Escape safe?
The 2023 Ford Escape earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in frontal- and side-crash tests, and four stars in the rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety did not award it a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ designation, noting a Marginal result in the updated side-impact test, while it earned Good scores in the other IIHS tests.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford makes Co-Pilot360 standard, with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Co-Pilot360 2.0 adds adaptive cruise control, road sign recognition, lane-centering technology, and a surround-view camera.
The main safety caveat is the IIHS side-impact result, so you should pay close attention to crash history and body condition when shopping used examples.
Should I buy a 2023 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.85% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 refresh brings a more traditional front end and a stronger tech-forward feel.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $22,970, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $23,041 average.
- It carries over the 2023 makeover with no major changes.
The bottom line: If you want the broader used-market selection and the year that introduced the refreshed look, the 2023 is the safer default. If your priority is simply paying a bit less and you do not mind a carryover model, the 2024 is the price-sensitive alternative.
