Overview

The Fiat 500X is a subcompact crossover that essentially functions as an upsized version of the now-discontinued 500. It’s the only model left in Fiat’s US lineup, and it rivals the Jeep Renegade (with which it shares a platform) and the MINI Countryman.

What’s New for the 2023 Fiat 500X

For 2023, the Fiat 500X soldiers on mostly unchanged, though the lineup has been reduced to just Pop and Sport trims, down from last year’s four trim options. The Fiat 500X was introduced for the 2016 model year and was refreshed for 2019, but beyond that, has seen no significant changes.

Design

The cheeky subcompact crossover’s cheerful appearance is perhaps its best attribute, even though it looks a little dated. The base Pop trim comes standard with LED taillights, a rear spoiler, chrome trim, and 17-inch wheels. The Sport trim can be outfitted with LED front lighting, a panoramic sunroof, more styling options, and 19-inch wheels.

Powertrain

Both trim levels of the 2023 Fiat 500X come powered by a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive (AWD). This powertrain is rated for 177 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. There are no other engine options and no performance upgrades available. The EPA rates the 500X at 24 mpg city, 30 highway, and 26 combined, and premium fuel is recommended.

Interior

The Fiat 500X seats five in theory, though the rear seat might be a tight squeeze for three passengers who aren’t all small children. The 500X’s cabin is stylish, even if it isn’t especially comfortable or practical. In the Pop trim, cloth upholstery comes standard, and the front seats are manually adjustable, though they are heated. Trade up to the Sport trim for front sport seats with power adjustments on the driver’s seat, a sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, ambient lighting, and more upholstery options.

Technology

Infotainment and technology features are a little behind the times in the Fiat 500X, with only basic standard amenities and no options like wireless smartphone compatibility or wireless charging. The Fiat 500X in Pop trim comes standard with a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, voice recognition, three USB ports, and a six-speaker audio system. Remarkably, the Sport trim adds only satellite radio to this list.

Safety

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the Fiat 500X recently. The 2023 500X comes standard only with a reversing camera. Features such as rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and front and rear parking sensors all cost more, and some aren’t even available on the base Pop trim.

Pricing

The 2023 Fiat 500X is on sale now, though it’s likely lonely in the showroom since it’s the only new model Fiat currently sells. As of this writing, Fiat lists pricing for the base 500X Pop at an MSRP of $29,505 and the Sport at $32,495. Notable options are generally limited to active safety features.
