Is the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta earns a 5/5 user rating and a 6.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.

The overview points you toward a sedan that fits if you want a fuel-efficient daily driver with a comfortable ride and a well-equipped cabin. The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and all-wheel drive is not available.

With 36.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to find a strong-value example.

The expert road test also reinforces that impression by describing the cabin as comfortable for cruising and the seats as well-cushioned and supportive over long drives.

The refreshed model also adds useful standard equipment, which can help reduce the friction of ownership. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car has been maintained well and that any prior wear or repair history is clean.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Jetta?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still prioritize a history report, because accident-free listings are strong but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection matters too, especially if you want to confirm that the cabin electronics, driver aids, and transmission behavior all feel right. Focus on overall condition, since the Jetta’s value proposition depends heavily on whether it still feels well kept and properly equipped.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup was simplified to S, Sport, SE, and SEL, with the Sport replacing the outgoing R-Line and the SEL Premium dropped. The base Jetta S is the least equipped, while the SEL adds the most upscale cabin and tech features.
• Powertrain: The 2022 Jetta uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 158 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. It can be paired with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, and the automatic is the only transmission on SE and SEL trims.
• Safety package: IQ.Drive is the umbrella driver-assistance suite. S and Sport get blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian recognition. The available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
• Infotainment: S, Sport, and SE trims use a 6.5-inch Volkswagen MIB2 system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, MirrorLink, Bluetooth, two USB-C ports, and an SD card multimedia interface. SEL upgrades to an 8-inch MIB3 system with navigation, wireless App-Connect, wireless device charging, multi-phone pairing, and enhanced voice recognition.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual is rated at 29 mpg city and 43 mpg highway. Automatic S and Sport models are rated at 31 mpg city and 41 mpg highway, while automatic SE and SEL models are rated at 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 4 trim levels: S, Sport, SE, and SEL.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it still gets the core tech and safety basics, including the 6.5-inch infotainment system and standard driver-assistance features. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the refreshed Jetta.
• Sport: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more appealing mix of equipment without jumping too far in price. It also keeps the Jetta’s value-minded character intact while giving you a little more substance than the base model.
• SE: This trim is the smart middle ground if you want the full IQ.Drive safety suite standard and a more complete everyday setup. It’s the trim to target if you want a balanced mix of equipment and value.
• SEL: This is the most feature-rich version, with the 8-inch MIB3 system, navigation, wireless App-Connect, wireless charging, and the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro. Choose it if you want the most polished Jetta experience.

The full IQ.Drive safety list is standard on SE and SEL trims.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market.

• Deal availability: 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,425 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.54% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,569, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $17,570 sits slightly below last year's $18,600.

That decline suggests the Jetta has softened in the used market, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car is equipped. Models with stronger feature content and cleaner histories should be easier to move when it’s your turn to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Jetta has yet to receive crash safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard IQ.Drive brings blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian recognition on S and Sport trims. The available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. SE and SEL trims get the full IQ.Drive safety list standard.

One caveat to keep in mind is that Travel Assist is not a hands-free system, and the expert review notes that it needed extra guidance on sweeping highway curves.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.54% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen gave the 2022 model a value-minded refresh with more standard features and upgraded technology.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $19,435, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $17,570 average.
• It adds a more polished interior and upgraded digital displays on higher trims.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2022 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with solid deal availability and strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model with a slightly more refined presentation, the 2023 is worth a look.
