Summary
With 240 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,063, 37.5% of 2022 Subaru Forester listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Forester 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Forester stands out as a practical compact crossover with a roomy cabin, standard all-wheel drive, and standard advanced safety features. Subaru also updated it with fresh design details, an upgraded package of EyeSight driving assistance technologies, and improved utility features, giving the Forester a more polished and useful feel without changing its basic mission.
The biggest news for this model year is the new Forester Wilderness, which adds extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty. That makes the 2022 Forester more appealing to buyers who want a small SUV that can handle rougher terrain than many rivals. At the same time, its design may be polarizing, and its performance is described as fairly pedestrian, so it is best suited to shoppers who value capability, safety, and space over excitement.

I am not an electronic/computer geek and was a bit concerned about all the new technology. Learning to take advantage of all the Subaru Forester has to offer is actually easier than I thought it would be and so appreciated in daily driving. Roomy four door and covered cargo area, keyless entry is handy when my hands are full, great rear vision camera, auto heat/cooling settings and so many great features...wow! A few more cubbies would be my choice of added features. I was driving a 2016 Ford Escape prior to the Forester and liked the trays inside the front doors, the extra little shelf in the console, an extra shelf in the glove box, a couple small change holders by the gear shift and a slightly deeper shelf mid dashboard on top and by the shifter. Overall...I do enjoy the Subaru and the AWD feature that I havent had on any of my other vehicles. In snowy weather I have found it to be quite helpful.

| Year-Round Low | $24,172 |
| Year-Round High | $26,372 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,375 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.34% |
Prices have softened 8.34% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,991 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, and spacious interior, and many also value its AWD capabilities and technology. The practical, all-around-SUV character fits buyers who want a roomy, easy-to-live-with crossover rather than something sporty. The main trade-offs are its outdated styling and limited storage space, along with a desire from some owners for more power.
With a practical, safety-first mission and a new Wilderness variant for buyers who want more capability, it suits shoppers who prioritize utility over excitement. Good and great deals account for 38.1% of listings, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as dependable and trouble-free in everyday use, and the model’s reputation for durability comes through clearly in the ownership feedback. The Forester’s practical design and standard all-wheel drive also reinforce its long-term, confidence-inspiring character. Subaru’s cost-effectiveness notes further support that it’s built to be a vehicle you can count on over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core dependability and more about finding a well-kept example with consistent maintenance and no hidden wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate, even if it appears clean on the listing page. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the suspension, tires, brakes, and any signs of off-road use, especially if you’re considering a Wilderness model. Focus on overall condition and maintenance records, since this Forester is meant to be a practical long-term companion.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model starts with standard all-wheel drive, but the cabin and equipment are more basic than higher trims. Wilderness adds extra ground clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty, while Touring brings the most upscale safety and convenience content.
- Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive. It’s tuned for everyday usefulness rather than quick acceleration, and the Wilderness version adds a more off-road-oriented setup plus a 3,000-pound towing capacity.
- Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety mix, while Touring adds DriverFocus.
- Infotainment: Base trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring use an 8-inch screen with navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system, and Premium adds access to a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 25.9 mpg during evaluation.
Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest starting price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the 6.5-inch touchscreen, and the standard safety suite, so it covers the essentials well.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades without pushing too far up the price ladder. It also unlocks a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, which makes it a smart step up if you want more convenience and connectivity.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality and a more distinctive feel than the lower trims. It sits above Premium and gives you a more feature-rich middle ground without jumping all the way to the specialized models.
- Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most rugged version of the Forester. It adds extra clearance, all-terrain tires, skid protection, and off-road-focused hardware, making it the clear choice for rougher terrain.
- Limited: This trim is a strong choice if you want the larger 8-inch screen, navigation, and premium audio without going all the way to the top. It balances comfort and tech well.
- Touring: This is the most upscale Forester, and it’s the one to choose if you want the fullest safety and convenience experience. It also adds DriverFocus, which is a notable safety and driver-monitoring upgrade.
Touring trim adds DriverFocus, while the rest of the lineup relies on the standard EyeSight 4.0 safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,991 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,172, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $24,176 sits slightly below last year's $26,375.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the current trend suggests you should expect value to hold better than many mainstream SUVs only if the vehicle is clean, well maintained, and equipped in a desirable trim. The Forester’s practical reputation and broad appeal should still support demand, especially for shoppers who want standard all-wheel drive and strong safety credentials.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2022 Subaru Forester earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, with four-star rollover resistance and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety equipment, and Touring trim adds DriverFocus for drowsiness and distraction monitoring. The main caveat is that the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 38.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Subaru adds the new Wilderness trim with extra clearance and off-road-focused hardware.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $21,827, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,176 average.
- It’s a mostly unchanged, value-focused Forester with broad trim coverage.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,751, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,176 average.
- It adds next-generation EyeSight safety features and an improved standard infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, safety, and updated equipment, the 2022 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the cheaper path into the same practical formula. If you want the newest refinements and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is the better upgrade path.
