Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Subaru Forester 4.9 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2019 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact SUV built around the qualities many shoppers want most: all-weather capability, passenger space, cargo room, and solid fuel economy. Subaru’s long history with the Forester also matters here, since the model helped establish the crossover formula that became so popular. For buyers, that makes the 2019 Forester appealing as a practical, family-friendly choice with standard all-wheel drive and a reputation for being easy to live with.
It also brings a useful mix of strengths that fit everyday driving. The test-drive data highlights standard advanced safety features and easy-to-use technology, while owners praise its spaciousness, visibility, comfort, and all-wheel-drive capability. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: performance is described as fairly pedestrian, styling is uninspired, and some owners mention the lack of a standard transmission option and difficulties with Android connectivity.

Reviewed a 2019 Subaru Forester on Nov 12, 2020
This is our first Subaru, we have previously driven - Toyota Rav4, Jeep Cherokee, Jeep Patriot, and Hyundai Santa Fe. We wanted to find a Subaru Forester as we grow our family because of the longevity of the vehicle and the amazing safety ratings. The 2019 Forester is going to be perfect for us. It gets great gas mileage, the visibility from the drivers seat is unmatched, its spacious, and has plenty of room in the trunk for groceries, luggage, a dog, whatever you need. We like the height of the vehicle and it runs very smoothly. This car is a great value, especially if it lasts the way most Subarus seem to last! We also looked at getting an Outback, but after a bit of research, decided that the Forester was more fitting for our family and lifestyle.

How much does the 2019 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,694 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,694 |
| Year-Round High | $19,654 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $19,657 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.90% |
Prices have softened 4.90% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,310 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2019 Subaru Forester earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, safety features, comfort, visibility, and all-wheel-drive capability. That lines up well with the Forester’s practical, family-friendly mission, especially if you want a compact SUV that’s easy to live with and built for everyday utility.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the styling is uninspired. In other words, this is a smart pick if you value usefulness, confidence in bad weather, and low-stress ownership more than excitement behind the wheel.
Only 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective rather than deeply discounted.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and easy to count on for daily use. That impression is reinforced by the Forester’s reputation for long-term practicality and by the expert assessment of its smooth, composed driving character.
Subaru also emphasizes value and ownership ease in the way this model is packaged, which helps support confidence if you plan to keep it for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that has been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Subaru Forester?
At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork so you can separate a clean, well-kept Forester from one that has had a harder life.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Base trim is already well equipped with standard LED headlights, symmetrical all-wheel drive, EyeSight, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and useful cargo-friendly touches, while Premium adds a panoramic moonroof, power front seats, and 4G Wi-Fi capability. Sport adds more style and substance with heated front seats, paddle shifters, a windshield wiper de-icer, and larger wheels, while Limited and Touring bring the most upscale cabin features and the larger 8-inch touchscreen.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard AWD. The setup is tuned more for efficiency and smoothness than quick acceleration, so you should expect relaxed performance rather than strong passing power.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard across the lineup and includes forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, adaptive headlights, and lane-keeping Assist. Standard safety equipment also includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags and a reversing camera.
- Infotainment: Base and Premium trims use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Limited and Touring get an 8-inch screen with Subaru’s Starlink system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and the system is described as responsive and easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The Forester returns 26 mpg city, 33 highway, and 29 combined.
Which 2019 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2019 Subaru Forester is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the Forester’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get standard AWD, EyeSight, LED headlights, a 6.5-inch touchscreen, and practical cabin features, so it covers the essentials well.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a panoramic moonroof, power front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, reclining rear seatbacks, and 4G Wi-Fi capability without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- Sport: Choose this if you want more style and a few comfort upgrades, including heated front seats, paddle shifters, a windshield wiper de-icer, and unique interior and exterior accents. It also offers the larger touchscreen as an option.
- Limited: This is the sweet spot if you want a more upscale feel, since it adds leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, a power rear tailgate, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and the larger 8-inch touchscreen.
- Touring: Pick this if you want the most features, including heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, navigation, and one-touch quick-release folding rear seats.
EyeSight is standard on every trim, so you don’t have to move up the lineup to get the core safety package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting huge discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,310 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,694, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $18,694 sits slightly below last year's $19,657.
That price movement suggests the Forester has softened enough to create a more approachable entry point for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to preserve value later.
The model’s broad appeal helps support resale because shoppers continue to value its space, safety, and all-weather capability. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Subaru Forester safe?
The 2019 Subaru Forester earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, adaptive headlights, and lane-keeping Assist. Standard safety equipment also includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags and a reversing camera.
Should I buy a 2019 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.90% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 Forester combines standard AWD, strong safety tech, and a practical cabin, but its performance is still described as fairly pedestrian.
The bottom line: The 2019 Forester makes the most sense if you want a practical, safety-focused compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive and strong owner approval. If you’re price-sensitive, this year’s softer pricing can make it a smart buy; if you want more performance, you may want to keep shopping other years or alternatives.
