How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,841 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, AWD capability, and useful technology. That lines up well with the Forester’s practical, easy-to-live-with mission, especially if you want a compact SUV that prioritizes everyday usefulness over flash.

The main trade-offs are its fairly pedestrian performance and polarizing design. In other words, it makes more sense if you value utility, safety, and versatility than quick acceleration or standout styling.

Good and great deals account for 36.5% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with buyers repeatedly highlighting the Forester’s long-term appeal, comfort, and confidence-inspiring AWD. The expert evaluation also reinforces that sense of durability and everyday dependability, describing it as a practical SUV that’s easy to live with and known for holding its value over time.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about durability and more about whether you can live with its modest power and dated-feeling character.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, suspension, and electronics, and pay close attention to overall condition because this model’s value proposition depends heavily on how well it has been maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trim starts with standard all-wheel drive and a practical setup, but the higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. The Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and an interior designed to get dirty.
• Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive. It’s tuned more for everyday usability than strong acceleration, and the Wilderness adds off-road-oriented hardware and a 25% increase in initial torque supply.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the standard and available safety features.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring trims upgrade to an 8-inch screen with navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 25.9 mpg during evaluation.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight safety tech, and the basic infotainment setup, so it covers the essentials well.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful convenience without pushing too far up the price ladder. It also unlocks a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, which makes it a smart step up if you spend a lot of time in the car.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality and a more feature-rich feel than the lower trims. It sits in the middle of the lineup and is a good fit if you want more equipment without going all the way to the luxury-oriented trims.
• Wilderness: Pick this if you want the most adventurous version of the Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, a full-size spare, and a 180-degree forward-view camera, making it the clear choice for buyers who plan to leave pavement behind.
• Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want the larger 8-inch screen, navigation, and the Harman Kardon audio system without stepping all the way to Touring. It’s a strong comfort-and-tech upgrade.
• Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale Forester experience. It adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction, along with the highest-end convenience and safety presentation in the lineup.

Touring trim also adds DriverFocus, while EyeSight 4.0 remains the core safety package across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,841 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.61% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 84.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,990, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $23,990 sits slightly below last year's $26,249.

That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to normalize. The good news is that the Forester’s practical reputation and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time.

Because shoppers often seek out used Foresters for their utility, safety, and AWD appeal, well-kept examples should remain attractive to buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Subaru Forester earns five-star ratings in all NHTSA evaluations except rollover resistance, which results in a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear automatic braking, and access to automatic collision notification and SOS emergency assistance through a Safety and Security subscription plan.

Touring trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction. The main caveat is the rollover result, which is lower than the rest of the NHTSA testing.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.61% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds the new Wilderness trim and upgraded EyeSight 4.0 safety tech.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,579, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $23,990 average.
• It offers broad trim coverage and standard AWD.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $26,411, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $23,990 average.
• It adds refined safety and infotainment updates.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around pick if you want the updated safety tech and the new Wilderness option. If price matters most, the 2021 is the value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer updates and are willing to pay more.
