CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Forester
overall

Summary
With 4,016 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,747.00, 33.1% of 2022 Subaru Foresters for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Forester 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Forester stands out as a compact crossover SUV that can go farther off-road thanks to the new-for-2022 Forester Wilderness. Subaru also updated the 2022 Forester with fresh design details, an upgraded package of EyeSight driving assistance technologies, and improved utility features. Those changes give it a broader appeal than just everyday commuting, especially for buyers who want a practical SUV with a little more adventure in its character.
Even without the Wilderness version, the Forester’s core strengths remain easy to see: it is spacious, comes with standard all-wheel drive, and includes standard advanced safety features. That combination makes it a strong choice for shoppers who value confidence in poor weather and a roomy cabin. The tradeoff is that its design may be polarizing, and its performance is fairly pedestrian, so it is better suited to buyers who prioritize usefulness and security over excitement.

I am not an electronic/computer geek and was a bit concerned about all the new technology. Learning to take advantage of all the Subaru Forester has to offer is actually easier than I thought it would be and so appreciated in daily driving. Roomy four door and covered cargo area, keyless entry is handy when my hands are full, great rear vision camera, auto heat/cooling settings and so many great features...wow! A few more cubbies would be my choice of added features. I was driving a 2016 Ford Escape prior to the Forester and liked the trays inside the front doors, the extra little shelf in the console, an extra shelf in the glove box, a couple small change holders by the gear shift and a slightly deeper shelf mid dashboard on top and by the shifter. Overall...I do enjoy the Subaru and the AWD feature that I havent had on any of my other vehicles. In snowy weather I have found it to be quite helpful.

How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,751 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,751.40 |
| Year-Round High | $26,964.83 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,966 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.22% |
Prices have softened 8.22% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 4,134 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions. If you find a listing below $24,751.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Forester earns a 4.62/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its comfortable ride, safety features, and spacious interior, and many also value its AWD capability and technology. The same feedback points to a practical, dependable feel that suits everyday use and longer-term ownership. The trade-offs are familiar: styling can feel dated, storage space can be limited, and some drivers want more power.
That lines up with the Forester’s role as a roomy, confidence-inspiring compact SUV for commuting, family duty, and bad-weather driving rather than for excitement. With 33.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, trouble-free, and dependable ownership experience, with praise for the SUV’s long-term usefulness and confidence-inspiring AWD. The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by describing the Forester as durable and well suited to daily living. Subaru does not frame this model around a maintenance perk in the provided test-drive material, but the overall package still reads as one built for steady, long-term use.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright fragility and more about finding a well-kept example that has not been neglected or abused.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not guarantee perfect condition or consistent maintenance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, tires, brakes, and any signs of off-road use or cosmetic wear. It also makes sense to compare trim equipment closely, since the Forester’s value depends heavily on how much safety, tech, and utility gear you want.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model gets standard all-wheel drive, but the cabin and equipment are described as more functional than upscale, so higher trims matter if you want a more polished feel.
- Powertrain: The Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a CVT and all-wheel drive; it is adequate, but acceleration is not its strength.
- Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering; blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also included among the available safety features.
- Infotainment: Base models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services; Wilderness, Limited, and Touring use an 8-inch screen with navigation and Harman Kardon audio available.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 25.9 mpg.
Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want standard all-wheel drive and the Forester’s core practicality at the lowest starting price, but it is the least equipped version.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience without pushing you into the pricier upper end of the lineup.
- Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality in the lineup while still keeping the Forester’s practical strengths.
- Wilderness: This is the one to buy if you want the most off-road-ready version, with extra ground clearance, protective cladding, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, and a full-size spare.
- Limited: This trim makes sense if you want the larger 8-inch screen and more of the higher-end tech and comfort equipment.
- Touring: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped Forester, including DriverFocus and the most premium-feeling feature set.
Touring trim adds DriverFocus, while Wilderness, Limited, and Touring are the trims that get the 8-inch screen and related upgrades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,134 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,751.40, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?
The current average of $24,751 sits slightly below last year's $26,966.
That price movement suggests the Forester has softened enough to help you buy more selectively today, while still retaining the kind of broad appeal that supports future demand. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation compared with a vehicle that is already overpriced relative to its market. The model’s practical reputation and strong safety image should continue to help it hold buyer interest.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?
It earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, which gets a four-star assessment.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight 4.0 safety system is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Touring trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.
The main caveat is that the review notes a possible warning-light issue during one restart, and the Wilderness may require re-testing because of its modified height.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Subaru added the Wilderness trim and upgraded EyeSight for this year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,344, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,751 average.
- It is a value-focused, safety-first version with standard AWD.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $27,266, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,751 average.
- It adds refined safety and infotainment updates for everyday use.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and feature content, the 2022 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want the newest updates and can pay more, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path.
