How much does the 2022 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have softened 8.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 3,939 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a model with a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise the Forester for its comfortable ride, safety features, spacious interior, and AWD capability. The same feedback also points to useful technology and an easy-to-live-with character, which fits a compact SUV built around daily practicality.

The trade-offs are clear: the design can feel outdated, storage space is limited for some owners, and performance is not especially strong. That makes it a better fit if you value space, safety, and all-weather usefulness more than quick acceleration or flashy styling.

With its roomy cabin and standard all-wheel drive, it makes the most sense for you if you want a practical compact crossover that handles commuting, errands, and rough weather with minimal fuss. The market still shows 36.5% good or great deals, so there are opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers emphasizing the Forester’s durability and confidence-inspiring all-wheel-drive setup. The expert review also describes it as durable and well suited to daily living, which reinforces the sense that it’s built for long-term use.

Subaru’s cost-effectiveness notes also frame it as a vehicle known for holding its value over time, which is another positive sign for ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about the core formula and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn down by hard use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the drivetrain, suspension, and any signs of rough use, especially if the vehicle has seen frequent bad-weather or outdoor-duty driving. Condition matters most on this model because its appeal depends heavily on practicality and all-weather capability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring. The base model starts with standard all-wheel drive, but the cabin is simpler and the equipment list is more basic than higher trims. Wilderness stands apart with extra clearance, more body cladding, and a dirt-friendly interior, while Touring adds the most upscale safety and convenience content.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower, a CVT, and standard all-wheel drive. The setup is tuned more for everyday usability and efficiency than quick acceleration, and the Wilderness version adds a more capable off-road setup plus a towing-capacity boost.
• Safety package: EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking are also part of the safety picture, while Touring adds DriverFocus. Base trims do not get the same level of premium safety convenience as upper trims.
• Infotainment: Base models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, and Starlink connected services. Wilderness, Limited, and Touring upgrade to an 8-inch screen, which adds navigation and a Harman Kardon premium sound system; Premium also adds access to a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The Wilderness is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle returned 25.9 mpg during evaluation.

Which 2022 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the entry point if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the 6.5-inch touchscreen, and the standard safety suite, so it covers the essentials well.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds useful everyday upgrades without pushing too far up the price ladder. It’s the trim to target if you want a more complete ownership experience and better convenience features.
• Sport: Choose this if you want a little more personality and a more distinctive feel than the lower trims. It sits in the middle of the lineup and gives you a step up without jumping all the way to the more specialized versions.
• Wilderness: This is the one to buy if you want the most rugged Forester. It adds extra ground clearance, protective cladding, all-terrain tires, a skid plate, a full-size spare, and a forward-view camera, making it the clear pick for rougher terrain.
• Limited: This trim is a strong choice if you want the larger 8-inch screen and a more upscale feature set without going all the way to Touring. It balances comfort and tech well.
• Touring: Pick this if you want the most fully equipped Forester, including DriverFocus and the most premium convenience content. It’s the top choice if you want the most advanced safety and comfort features in the lineup.

Touring trim adds DriverFocus, while the Wilderness trim gets the most specialized safety and off-road-oriented equipment.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 3,939 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 85.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,060, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $24,060 sits slightly below last year's $26,299.

That price movement suggests the Forester has become more accessible for buyers, which can help demand in the used market. For a future seller, that means you may not be selling into the same pricing environment that existed a year ago, so condition and trim choice will matter more.

The good news is that the Forester’s practical reputation still supports buyer interest. A model with strong utility, standard all-wheel drive, and broad appeal tends to stay relevant even when prices soften.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2022 Forester earns a five-star overall crash-test rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in all evaluations except rollover resistance, which results in a four-star assessment.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight 4.0 is the standard driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and Automatic Emergency Steering. The Forester also includes a rear-seat reminder system, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear automatic braking. Touring trim adds DriverFocus, which monitors for drowsiness and distraction.

The main caveat is that the IIHS had not yet rated the new Forester at the time of the review, so the strongest crash-test confirmation here comes from NHTSA.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.51% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Subaru added fresh design details, upgraded EyeSight tech, and the new Wilderness trim.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,664, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,060 average.
• It’s a value-focused carryover with standard AWD and broad trim coverage.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $26,586, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,060 average.
• It adds next-generation EyeSight and an improved standard infotainment system.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of updated safety tech, practical utility, and market pricing, the 2022 is the strongest all-around choice. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better budget play; if you want the newer infotainment and safety refinements, the 2023 is worth the extra money.
