How much does the 2022 Subaru Ascent cost?

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The 2022 Ascent is built for you if you want a three-row Subaru with standard all-wheel drive, family-hauling capacity, and a practical, safety-minded personality. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

The trade-offs are clear: the third row is cramped, and the styling is uninspired. It also performs better when lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance are turned off.

With 34.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 Ascent leans into Subaru’s reputation for durability and confident travel in varied weather and road conditions. Its standard all-wheel drive and practical family-focused design support that image, while the expert review also emphasizes the brand’s durability-minded character. The turbocharged powertrain is described as brisk, with commendable passing power and a CVT that keeps the engine in its torque band efficiently.

Subaru also notes that every version includes standard AWD and EyeSight, which adds to the sense that the Ascent is engineered for everyday dependability. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about core capability and more about choosing a well-kept example with the right maintenance history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only one part of the picture. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the third row, interior wear, and how the driver-assistance systems behave on the road. Pay close attention to condition if you plan to use the Ascent as a family hauler, since that’s where wear and tear tends to show up first.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trim starts with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while Premium adds an 8-inch display and more connected features. The Onyx Edition adds blacked-out exterior trim, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, and StarTex upholstery, while Touring gets additional tech such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.
• Powertrain: Every 2022 Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds, and the review notes that acceleration is brisk with commendable passing power.
• Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. Steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires Premium trim or higher.
• Infotainment: Base models get a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. Premium trim adds an 8-inch display with available Starlink connected services, including a WiFi hotspot and remote engine starting with climate control pre-conditioning.
• Fuel efficiency: The 20-inch-wheel version is rated at 22 mpg combined, and the review recorded 20.5 mpg on its testing loop.

Which 2022 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Ascent is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point if you want the Ascent’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight, and the 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so it covers the essentials well.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch display and available connected services, plus blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want a more complete family SUV without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• Onyx Edition: This is the style-forward choice, with blacked-out exterior trim, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, and StarTex upholstery. It suits you if you want a more distinctive look and a more practical interior treatment.
• Limited: This trim sits above the midrange and is part of the broader lineup for shoppers who want more equipment than Premium without going all the way to Touring.
• Touring: This is the top-end choice if you want the most technology, including the digital rearview mirror and 180-degree-view front camera.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts at Premium trim, so that’s the key safety-package step up to watch for.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,472 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $25,043, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Ascent's resale value?

The current average of $25,043 sits slightly below last year's $28,599.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the Ascent easier to purchase now than it was a year ago. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold up better than rougher ones, especially if they present as clean family vehicles.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent safe?

The 2022 Subaru Ascent earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and five-star ratings in all NHTSA evaluations except rollover resistance, where it earns a four-star rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. The Ascent also comes with steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available starting with Premium trim.

One caveat is that the camera-based system can struggle in low, direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering tech can feel less refined than you might expect.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year adds the new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,564, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $25,043 average.
• It offers standard all-wheel drive, a spacious cabin, and a long list of standard features.

The bottom line: Choose the 2022 if you want the newer model-year value story, the Onyx Edition, and strong safety credentials. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget play and still delivers the Ascent’s core practicality.
