How much does the 2022 Subaru Ascent cost?

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 5/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 7.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.

The 2022 Ascent is built for you if you want a three-row Subaru with standard all-wheel drive and family-hauling practicality. Its strengths center on durability, safety, and confident travel in varied weather and road conditions, while the new Onyx Edition adds a more distinctive look and water-resistant upholstery.

The main trade-offs are a cramped third row and styling that may not stand out to you. It also performs better when the lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance are turned off.

Good and great deals account for 38.3% of listings, which gives you a decent chance of finding a competitive price.

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 Ascent leans into Subaru’s reputation for durability and dependable all-weather travel. Its standard all-wheel drive, turbocharged 2.4-liter engine, and CVT are paired with a setup that’s designed to deliver steady everyday usability, and the expert review also highlights strong value and practical family use.

The powertrain is described as brisk, with commendable passing power and a CVT that keeps the engine in its torque band while helping with quiet cruising. Subaru also includes standard AWD and X-Mode traction control, which adds confidence when conditions get rough.

Subaru’s EyeSight system includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology, and the model also offers collision-avoidance and driving aids that support everyday use. First scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about basic durability and more about whether the driver-assistance tech and interior condition have aged well under real-world use.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on interior condition, tire wear, and how the driver-assistance systems behave on a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Base trim gives you the essentials, but Premium adds important equipment, and the Onyx Edition brings blacked-out exterior trim, unique grille treatment, and StarTex upholstery.
• Powertrain: Every 2022 Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive, and the setup is tuned for brisk acceleration and towing up to 5,000 pounds.
• Safety package: EyeSight is standard, and it includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology; blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts at Premium trim.
• Infotainment: Base trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player; Premium upgrades to an 8-inch display with available connected services, WiFi hotspot, and remote engine starting with climate control pre-conditioning.
• Fuel efficiency: The 20-inch-wheel version is rated at 22 mpg combined, and the expert test drive returned 20.5 mpg on its loop.

Which 2022 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?

The 2022 Subaru Ascent is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point if you want standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight, and the core Ascent formula at the lowest price.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 8-inch display and unlocks blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Onyx Edition: Choose this if you want the blacked-out styling, StarTex upholstery, and a more distinctive look without moving all the way to the top.
• Limited: This is the step-up choice if you want a more upscale feel than Premium without going straight to Touring.
• Touring: Pick this if you want the most equipment, including the digital rearview mirror and 180-degree-view front camera.

Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires Premium trim or higher.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,446 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.59% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,920, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Subaru Ascent's resale value?

The current average of $24,920 sits slightly below last year's $28,509.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you’re a future seller, you’ll want to protect value by choosing a well-kept example with clean history and desirable equipment.

The Ascent’s strong safety reputation and practical family focus should help it stay appealing to used buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent safe?

The Ascent gets a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the highest possible rating in all of the organization’s assessments, and it earns five-star ratings in all NHTSA evaluations except rollover resistance, where it earns a four-star rating.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is standard and includes numerous collision-avoidance and driving aids, including adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. Subaru also includes steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is available starting at Premium trim.

A key caveat is that the camera-based system can struggle in low, direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise control and lane-centering tech can feel less refined than you might expect.

Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 38.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.59% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 adds the new Onyx Edition with blacked-out trim and water-resistant upholstery.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $21,422, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,920 average.
• It offers standard all-wheel drive and a spacious cabin.

The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the newer lineup with the Onyx Edition and a stronger current-market value story. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget play, especially if you’re comfortable giving up the newer trim addition.
