CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 624 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,382, 28.5% of 2022 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out by blending style, driving enjoyment, and a more upscale feel than many mainstream compact cars. Mazda’s own test-drive notes describe it as delivering intrinsic value, and the car’s strengths include stylish design, fun-to-drive manners, and great safety ratings. Owners echo that appeal, often praising the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine.
This model year also brings a few notable updates. A Mazda3 2.5 S Carbon Edition debuts with Polymetal Gray paint, black 18-inch alloy wheels, black mirror caps, and a 12-speaker Bose premium sound system with aluminum speaker grilles. Mazda3 Turbo models gain a standard wiper de-icer system, and Platinum Quartz Metallic is newly available as a paint color. At the same time, the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is not without drawbacks: the test-drive data calls out poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and unintuitive technology, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value design and driving character over maximum practicality.

This car is beautiful, so far no problems reliability-wise, to be expected from a tried-and-true NA 4 cyl paired to a traditional automatic transmission (no cvt unlike the current corolla and civic autos!). This car drives great for what it is. Speaking for the FWD model, handling is direct and predictable and has good feedback even with stock tires (215/45r18s on my trim). Even though this car isn’t as powerful as the turbo model, it’s fast enough to still be very enjoyable to drive. At 6’0, I surprisingly fit in the backseat of the hatch even with the front seat all the way back (not super comfortably though) and my head doesn’t touch the ceiling. Would recommend anybody interested to test drive this car.

I love this car because of its simple yet luxurious interior and it’s smooth drive. Also love the 6 speed. Perfect daily driver with room for modifications.

By far the best car in its class for performance, luxury, and technology. The turbo engine combined with already excellent handling takes the already popular Mazda 3 to an elevated level.

I love the comfort of the interior, the seats molds around your body. It has a lot of nice features that I was looking for, sunroof, keyless entry,,heater seats and a great Bose stereo that blows your mind. I wish it came with a bigger spoiler of a different color than the car. My biggest change would be to put a black package on them. They look silly with black wheels and chrome trim, I am adding aftermarket black trim everywhere. The only other thing Is, I wish it looked a little more sporty. I bought the turbo and it has plenty of kick but could have used a little bit of a different design than the regular model. For the 32k price range it was a good value in today’s market if it was a little sportier looking.

Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable and luxurious interior, impressive handling, and strong performance, especially with the turbo engine. The model also gets credit for its stylish design and Bose audio system.
The main trade-offs are poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and unintuitive technology. That means you’ll like this car most if you value design and driving character more than maximum practicality.
With its upscale feel and broad appeal across compact-car shoppers, it also looks like a strong value in the market, especially when you find one priced well.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as comfortable, luxurious, and strong-running, and they repeatedly point to the turbo engine as a highlight. The ownership experience also gets support from the car’s refined feel and the sense that it delivers a lot of substance for the money.
The expert notes also emphasize intrinsic value and a polished, confidence-inspiring driving experience. Mazda Connected Services is complimentary for three years of ownership, and it includes remote engine starting, a car finder function, and automatic emergency notification after a collision.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about whether the specific car has been maintained well and used in a way that matches your expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as guaranteed problem-free cars. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re considering a turbo model or a higher-mileage example. Focus on interior condition, technology operation, and brake feel, since those are the kinds of areas that can shape your ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup spans sedan and hatchback body styles, with the 2.0 sedan, 2.5 S, and 2.5 Turbo model series. The 2.5 S lineup offers the most variety, while the 2.5 S Premium hatchback is the only one with a six-speed manual transmission. Base versions are more limited, so check carefully for the features you want.
- Powertrain: The 2.0-liter four-cylinder makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque, while the 2.5-liter four-cylinder produces 186 hp and 186 lb-ft. The 2.5 Turbo uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on 87-octane fuel, or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on 93-octane fuel.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher. Turbos add adaptive front headlights, and the top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch static infotainment display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and Mazda Connected Services is complimentary for three years. The system does not use a touchscreen layout.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0 sedan returns 31 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 S range runs from 27 mpg to 30 mpg combined, depending on trim and powertrain. Turbo models return 26 mpg in the hatchback and 27 mpg in the sedan.
Which 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 5 trim levels: Mazda3 2.0, Mazda3 2.5 S, Mazda3 2.5 S Select, Mazda3 2.5 S Premium, Mazda3 2.5 Turbo.
Here's the short version:
- Mazda3 2.0: This is the most affordable path into the lineup, and it makes sense if you want the Mazda3’s style and safety without paying for extra power. It is sedan-only and best for shoppers who care most about price and efficiency.
- Mazda3 2.5 S: This is the best-value choice for most buyers because it adds the stronger 2.5-liter engine and keeps the car’s core appeal intact. If you want the sweet spot between everyday usability and driving enjoyment, start here.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Select: This trim is the better pick if you want more everyday convenience and a stronger safety feature set. It adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, which makes it a smart step up for many shoppers.
- Mazda3 2.5 S Premium: Choose this one if you want the most flexibility in the 2.5 S lineup, especially the hatchback with the six-speed manual transmission. It suits you best if you want a more engaging setup without moving all the way to turbo power.
- Mazda3 2.5 Turbo: This is the right choice if performance matters most. It brings the turbocharged engine, standard AWD, and the strongest acceleration in the lineup, making it the pick for buyers who want the most rewarding drive.
Safety-package note: blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts on the 2.5 S Select trim or higher, while the top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda MAZDA3?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and still find a solid deal.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 618 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.96% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,882, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $21,369 sits slightly below last year's $21,797.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper upside if you plan to resell soon. The current price trend suggests the model is holding value reasonably well rather than dropping sharply, which is a good sign for long-term ownership. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you should be in a better position when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?
The 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, including rollover resistance, and the IIHS names it a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert is standard starting with the 2.5 S Select trim. Turbos add adaptive front headlights, and the top trim adds Traffic Jam Assist, reverse automatic braking, and a surround-view camera system.
That combination gives you a very strong safety package, with the main caveat being that some of the more advanced features are reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.96% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines upscale design, strong safety, and a turbo option with standard AWD.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,709, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,369 average.
- It emphasizes refined driving enjoyment and a more mature turbocharged character.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $22,657, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,369 average.
- It adds hatchback practicality with more everyday versatility.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and overall appeal, the 2022 is the primary year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer model-year alternative.
