Why it stands out
The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD stands out as a heavy-duty truck that blends serious work capability with a more polished personality than many buyers expect from a one-ton pickup. It sits in the fifth generation, which brought a larger footprint, revised styling, and meaningful gains in towing capacity. For shoppers who need a truck that can do real hauling and towing work, that combination is the core appeal: the Sierra 3500HD is built to be a commercial-grade tool, but it also offers the kind of refinement that makes it easier to live with day to day.
For 2022, the Sierra 3500HD carried over the broad range of cab, bed, axle, and trim choices that make it so configurable. It could be had with a 6.6-liter V8 making 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, or with a 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 rated at 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, it could haul up to 7,442 pounds and tow up to 35,500 pounds. The lineup also gave buyers a clear spread from basic work-truck equipment to luxury and off-road trims, with features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on the base model, trailering aids, off-road hardware on the AT4, and upscale amenities on the Denali.
That said, the Sierra 3500HD is not trying to hide what it is. It is a large, unwieldy truck in tight spaces, and the most capable versions require the right engine and equipment to reach their maximum ratings. Still, for buyers who want a heavy-duty pickup with strong towing numbers, a wide range of configurations, and more comfort and technology than older generations offered, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD is a compelling choice.

Lots of features that will help with a fifth wheel. All vehicles seem to be overpriced but this seemed to fall in line with others.

NOT A GOOD BUY FOR THE MONEY! Simply put, the GMC Sierra is overpriced and under equipped. I just sold my 2019 F250 and that was a superior truck in very sense of the word compared to the GMC Sierra 3500HD but that doesnt stop GMC from overpricing this vehicle. Its sad when a work truck costs $85,000 and has sub-standard equipment. When will the truck industry reprice to lower affordable pricing? Its all about value for the dollar spent and ALL truck markets are nuts. Keep your old vehicles and push this market back by voting with your dollars.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD is described as a heavy-duty truck that blends serious work capability with a more polished personality, which suggests it is built around durability and utility rather than novelty. Its broad configuration range and commercial-grade mission also point to a truck designed for demanding use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that heavy-duty trucks often see hard work, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus on a pre-purchase inspection that checks for signs of hard towing or hauling use. Pay close attention to overall condition, because a truck built for serious work can hide wear that matters more than mileage alone. If possible, compare examples carefully and favor the cleanest-maintained truck over one that simply looks well equipped.

What is the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD's resale value?
The current average of $54,871 sits slightly below last year's $58,507.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean future resale gains are less likely to come from appreciation alone. For a seller, the current trend implies you may need to price competitively to stand out, especially if your truck is not exceptionally clean or well equipped. Strong condition and desirable configuration will matter more when the broader market is already leaning lower.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

If your priority is getting the best value, you should focus on clean, well-priced examples in this year; if you're especially price-sensitive, it also makes sense to compare nearby model years and choose the truck with the best condition-to-price balance.
