CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 206 currently listed for sale near Virginia Beach, VA and an average price of $31,546.00, 31.6% of 2022 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Mustang 4.78 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Mustang stands out as one of the most recognizable performance cars in American automotive history, and its appeal comes from how it makes performance feel accessible without losing its identity as a true sports car. It has long been offered in coupe and convertible body styles, and that familiar formula remains central to its character. For buyers, the Mustang’s biggest draw is the combination of heritage, rear-wheel-drive dynamics, and a wide range of trims and engines that let it serve both as an everyday sporty car and as something more serious.
What makes the 2022 Ford Mustang especially distinctive is the breadth of its performance choices. In the sixth generation, Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine powers base Mustangs, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Transmission choices include two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and the car remains exclusively rear-wheel drive. That variety is a major strength, but shoppers should also know that EcoBoost models are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage.
For a used-car buyer, the 2022 Mustang can be appealing because it is still relatively modern while remaining true to the Mustang formula. It offers the kind of performance and styling that owners praise, along with the option of a manual transmission for drivers who want a more engaging experience. At the same time, the model’s long list of configurations means condition and maintenance history matter, especially on a car that can be bought in very different forms depending on how much performance and equipment the original owner wanted.

My husband is against buying cars that have a history of being a rental. I think it’s because a rental isn’t your car and people are reckless. However, Kunes brought to my attention that rentals have strict maintenance requirements that make them a good choice.

Fun to drive. Ecoboost has enough power to have some fun. Everyones idea of enough power is relative but this car will go when you want it too. Looks are awesome and the feel is solid. Handling is excellent from where I am coming from. Id buy the car again.

The Mach 1 is a really good Mustang. Fills the gap between Gt and Gt350. The best thing is the Tremec transmission. But myself I need an automatic. Great body styling and nice exhaust rumble.

How much does the 2022 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $34,432 |
| Year-Round Low | $30,466.43 |
| Year-Round High | $34,630.48 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $33,794 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.89% |
Prices are up 1.89% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 1,785 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $30,466.43, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — owners rate it 4.78/5, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Review feedback consistently highlights the Mustang’s performance, handling, and styling, and many drivers especially like the manual transmission and the fun driving experience it delivers. That makes it a strong fit if you want a sporty car that feels engaging rather than purely practical. With 26.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Review feedback suggests the car is dependable in the ways owners care about most, especially when it comes to the driving experience and overall enjoyment over time. The strongest reliability takeaway for used buyers is that condition and maintenance history matter, since a well-kept example is more likely to deliver the trouble-free ownership experience you want.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then inspect the car closely for signs of prior damage, modifications, or uneven wear. Because condition can vary a lot across trims and setups, focus on maintenance records and overall mechanical health rather than just mileage. A careful pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you want the car to feel as good as it looks.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
This is a moderate market, so you can buy now if you’re selective and willing to compare listings carefully.

- Inventory: There are 1,785 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.89% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 79.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,466.43, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $34,432 sits slightly above last year's $33,794.
That upward movement suggests the market still values this model year well, which can help support resale strength if you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition. A Mustang with clean history and strong maintenance records should be easier to position competitively when it’s time to sell. Demand tends to hold up better when the car has the kind of owner appeal this one does.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 26.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.89% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,565, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $34,432 average.
- It blends classic pony-car identity with modern technology.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market picture and are comfortable paying more for a newer used example, the 2022 is the better primary target. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2021 is the smarter secondary path, especially if you find one with the right condition and history.
