CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 213 currently listed for sale near Virginia Beach, VA and an average price of $23,495, 34.7% of 2022 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Ford Mustang 4.78 / 5 stars.
90.6% of 2022 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Ford Mustang stands out because it combines the Mustang’s long-running rear-wheel-drive sports-car formula with a wide range of powertrains and body styles. Ford’s buying guide describes the Mustang as one of Detroit’s most enduring nameplates and notes that it has been available in coupe and convertible forms over the years, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable choice for shoppers who want something with both heritage and everyday appeal. Owner feedback reinforces that appeal, with praise centered on performance, handling, styling, and the availability of a manual transmission.
What makes the 2022 Ford Mustang especially distinctive is the breadth of its lineup. The guide says the current generation keeps the familiar front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and is offered in coupe and convertible body styles. It also notes that the Mustang is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while upper trims can be had with 5.0-liter V8 engines producing 480 hp or 500 hp, depending on trim. A 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. That mix gives the Mustang a broad range of personalities, from more accessible daily-driver versions to more serious performance models.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. The guide says the EcoBoost engine may get good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel, and it also reports that 2024 and 2025 Mustangs have been reported to suffer from powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, limited-slip differential problems, and electronic stability control issues. For a used-car shopper, the 2022 Ford Mustang’s appeal is that it delivers classic Mustang character, strong performance options, and enough variety to suit different budgets and preferences, even if buyers should still pay attention to equipment, condition, and maintenance history.

My husband is against buying cars that have a history of being a rental. I think it’s because a rental isn’t your car and people are reckless. However, Kunes brought to my attention that rentals have strict maintenance requirements that make them a good choice.

Fun to drive. Ecoboost has enough power to have some fun. Everyones idea of enough power is relative but this car will go when you want it too. Looks are awesome and the feel is solid. Handling is excellent from where I am coming from. Id buy the car again.

The Mach 1 is a really good Mustang. Fills the gap between Gt and Gt350. The best thing is the Tremec transmission. But myself I need an automatic. Great body styling and nice exhaust rumble.

| Year-Round Low | $30,471 |
| Year-Round High | $34,571 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $33,721 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.99% |
Prices are up 1.99% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 1,773 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare prices and equipment.
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — 4.78/5 is a strong user rating for this model year. Owners consistently praise the performance, handling, and styling, and many also like the manual transmission and the fun driving experience it delivers. That lines up well if you want a sporty car with heritage appeal and enough variety to fit different budgets and preferences. With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car people tend to enjoy and keep coming back to, especially when they value performance and a satisfying driving experience. The recurring praise for the car’s character and drivability suggests it can be a dependable choice when it has been maintained well. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the model’s appeal and more about finding one that has been cared for properly and not modified or neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should start with the history report so you can confirm accident status, title status, and maintenance patterns before you get too far into a deal. After that, prioritize a thorough inspection of the car’s condition, especially if it has been modified or driven hard. Focus on signs of wear, uneven upkeep, and anything that suggests the car’s equipment or maintenance history does not match the seller’s claims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate market, so you can buy now if the right car shows up, but you should still compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,773 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.99% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 78.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $30,471, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $34,391 sits slightly above last year's $33,721.
That upward move suggests the market still assigns solid value to this model year, which can help support resale if you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition. A stable-to-rising price trend also means you may not see steep depreciation as long as demand stays healthy. Strong shopper interest in performance, styling, and transmission choice can help keep future buyers engaged.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.99% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $31,066, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $34,391 average.
- It blends classic pony-car character with modern tech and a retro attitude.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market balance of demand, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2022 is the better primary target. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Mustang’s core appeal.
