For many luxury cars, comfort is the only consideration. But if you are in the market for a Bentley, there is an expectation not simply of performance, but of a certain kind of performance. The 2022 Bentley Continental GT perfectly exhibits this unique brand of high-powered, high-speed refinement. This third-generation Continental GT coupe was introduced as a 2019 model. For 2022, Bentley shakes things up a bit by offering the new, higher-performance Continental GT Speed. There is a convertible version of the Continental, dubbed the GTC, which is covered in a separate preview. The Continental GT comes equipped with a 542-horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 or a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12 engine, which is essentially two Volkswagen VR6 engines mated together. The VR6 is often described as an offset V6, or staggered V6, so you could consider the W12 actually a staggered or offset V12. Whatever you call it, this engine makes 626 hp in the standard Continental GT and 650 hp in the GT Speed. The latter will do zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, according to Bentley. Both the V8 and the W12 route power through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive (AWD). V8 models return an EPA-rated 16 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Fuel-economy ratings for the base W12 coupe weren’t available at press time, but the GT Speed is rated at 12 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined. The Continental GT’s lavish cabin comes standard with plush leather upholstery and genuine woodgrain veneer accent panels. The 12-way power-adjustable front seats are heated and can be had with ventilation and massaging functionality. The GT comes standard with a 12.3-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition to the more powerful engine, moving up to the GT Speed adds rear-wheel steering, 22-inch wheels, and standard air suspension with adaptive dampers. The GT Speed also features unique exterior styling enhancements, unique interior upholstery materials, and an optional carbon-fiber dashboard. The 2022 Bentley Continental GT has a starting price of $202,500, and the GT Speed starts at $277,625. The Bentley Continental GT and GT Speed are backed by a three-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty and a three-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
