CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW M3

Summary
With 235 currently listed for sale and an average price of $73,818, 34.9% of 2022 BMW M3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW M3 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW M3 stands out as a high-performance sedan that still manages to be practical for everyday use. BMW paired it with a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine and a standard six-speed manual gearbox, sending power to the rear wheels. In this configuration, it makes 473 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, and BMW says it can reach 60 mph in just over four seconds. That combination gives the car the kind of driver involvement enthusiasts expect, while still offering the kind of usable sedan body style that makes it easier to live with than a more specialized sports car.
BMW also gave the 2022 M3 a broader performance range through the Competition model, which uses an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and produces 503 hp and 479 lb-ft. For 2022, BMW began offering the M3 Competition xDrive with all-wheel drive, including a rear-drive-only setting for track use. The car’s styling was controversial from the start, but the bigger issue for many buyers is that the electric-assist steering remains a point of criticism. Even so, the M3’s acceleration, cornering ability, and daily practicality make it a compelling choice for drivers who want serious performance without giving up a usable back seat and a roomy 16.9-cubic-foot trunk.

Honestly for the money...theres no better car out there! AWD, 500hp, 500lbs of torque, 4 seats...great interior and drives like a dream. I had the option to move onto another vehicle after my previous 22 M3 was totaled, i looked at mercedes or audi or cadillac but came back the M3! The only car i would consider is the M3 Touring Wagon that they opted to not release in the US :(

The G80 M3 has been nothing short of controversial since we first laid eyes on it in 2020. While the appearance is rather polarizing what really matters is the experience you have behind the wheel and let me tell you it is a good one. The G80 M3 offers the most refined driving experience of any 3 Series to date. The I6 feels more reminiscent of an American V8 due to the large torque figures this M3 produces, but dont think for a second that the M3 has become all about power and nothing else like the AMG cars of the 2000s. The M3 does everything you want it to and so much more. If you do not care about the internet boys complaints about this cars appearance who have never actually driven one, then I guarantee buying one of these M3s would be one of the best purchases of your life.

| Average Price a Year Ago | $77,089 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.25% |
Prices have softened 4.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 232 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
If you find a listing below $71,720.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW M3 a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction for this model year. The 2022 M3 stands out as a high-performance sedan that still gives you everyday usefulness, with seating for five and a usable trunk. It also gives you meaningful flexibility, since BMW offered rear-wheel drive, a manual gearbox, and higher-output Competition and xDrive versions for buyers who want more traction or more performance. With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW M3 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 M3 is presented as a car that rewards careful ownership, and the overview makes clear that the best examples are the ones that have been maintained well and left unmodified. Because it is expensive to buy, maintain, and fix, your long-term risk is highest if you choose a neglected or heavily modified example.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW M3?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should prioritize a history report first, then focus your inspection on signs of prior damage, modifications, or deferred maintenance. Since the best examples are the ones that have been carefully maintained and left unmodified, condition matters a lot more here than it might on a more ordinary sedan. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if the car has been driven hard or has incomplete service records.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW M3?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 232 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $71,720.88, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW M3's resale value?
The current average of $73,812 sits slightly below last year's $77,089.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-kept example so you start from the strongest possible position. A car with documented maintenance and no accident history should be easier to move when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW M3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $70,421, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $73,812 average.
- It offers a calmer daily-driving feel with strong performance and a manual option.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $83,218, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $73,812 average.
- It adds broader versatility with high build quality and impressive interior materials.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the best all-around starting point if you want the strongest mix of performance, practicality, and current-market value. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better secondary path; if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling, more upscale experience, the 2023 is the upgrade to compare.
