CarGurus Analysis: 2022 BMW 5 Series

Summary
With 221 currently listed for sale near Atlanta, GA and an average price of $34,861.00, 43.0% of 2022 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 BMW 5 Series 5 / 5 stars.
100.0% of 2022 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 5 Series sits in the seventh-generation G30 family, and that matters because this version is defined less by raw sport-sedan sharpness than by a polished blend of comfort, technology, and everyday luxury. BMW had already moved the 5 Series toward a more relaxed character by this point, and the 2022 model reflects that shift while still keeping enough performance to feel like a proper BMW. It also benefits from the generation’s strong safety equipment and generally better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series, which helps make it a more reassuring used buy.
For 2022, the 5 Series lineup included the 530i, 540i, and 530e, along with the M550i xDrive. The 530i used a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the 540i used a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. The 530e plug-in hybrid was also part of the lineup, and the generation’s 2021 facelift brought a tweaked front end and a larger infotainment touchscreen. Inside, the cabin remained centered on BMW’s iDrive system and a large screen setup, but reviewers noted that the interface could be complex to learn.
What makes the 2022 5 Series appealing is that it offers a lot of the right luxury-sedan ingredients without abandoning the brand’s performance identity. Standard safety equipment was generous, including blind spot monitoring, lane departure warnings with lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, traffic sign recognition, and automatic high beams. At the same time, some of the best driver-assistance features remained optional, and reviewers also felt the steering and suspension in the 530i, 540d, and 540i did not deliver the same engaging feel as older 5 Series models. Even so, for buyers who want a refined midsize sedan with strong engines, useful technology, and a more mature personality, the 2022 BMW 5 Series is a compelling choice.

This is an awesome car and well equipped. Unfortunately it is missing a very important feature to me. I have had a M550 with the Bowers & Wilkins stereo and I have had a M550 with the Harmon Kardon, there is no comparison.

How much does the 2022 BMW 5 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $33,676 |
| Year-Round Low | $33,695.39 |
| Year-Round High | $36,530.85 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $36,517 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.78% |
Prices have softened 7.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,517 listings available, you have a solid amount of inventory to compare across trims and conditions.
If you find a listing below $33,695.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. The 2022 BMW 5 Series is positioned as a polished blend of comfort, technology, and everyday luxury, while still keeping enough performance to feel like a proper BMW. It also suits you if you want a refined midsize sedan with useful technology and a more mature personality than older, sharper-tuned versions.
With 33.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer.
Is the 2022 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 model benefits from the generation’s stronger safety equipment and a generally better reliability record than the earlier F10 5 Series. That makes it a more reassuring used buy if you want a luxury sedan that feels modern without being overly risky.
For long-term ownership, your biggest protection is choosing a well-documented example and avoiding cars with neglected maintenance or unresolved electronic issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a full records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, infotainment operation, and overall condition, since the cabin tech can be complex to learn and diagnose. Pay close attention to maintenance records and how the car has been used, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate market, so you can be selective without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,517 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 84.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $33,695.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $33,676 sits slightly below last year's $36,517.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation rather than just the badge alone. If you keep the car clean, well maintained, and accident-free, you give yourself a better chance of standing out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 84.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $28,705, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,676 average.
- It adds a midcycle refresh with a bigger touchscreen and mild-hybrid tech.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the better pick if you want the stronger current-market mix of inventory, deal availability, and a well-rounded luxury-sedan experience. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2021 is the smarter value play and still delivers much of the same core appeal.
