overall

Summary
With 156 currently listed for sale near Austin, TX and an average price of $21,508, 50.6% of 2022 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2022 BMW 3 Series stands out as a luxury sports sedan that still leans into the formula that made the nameplate famous: it is fun to drive, offers multiple powertrain options, and pairs that character with easy-to-use technology. BMW also gives every 3 Series Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation with navigation this year, which helps the cabin feel modern without making it complicated. For buyers who want a sedan that emphasizes driving enjoyment as much as everyday usability, that combination is a major part of its appeal.
At the same time, the 2022 model is described as essentially unchanged from 2019, even though BMW has expanded the lineup with plug-in hybrid and performance-tuned models and made minor changes to the standard and optional equipment lists. That means the 3 Series remains familiar rather than radically different, which can be a strength for shoppers who value continuity. Its drawbacks are worth noting, though: a manual transmission is not available, advanced safety features are not standard, and the stereo is lacking.
Owner feedback generally reinforces the car’s sporty personality, with praise for its performance, handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. Some drivers also mention oil leak issues and high maintenance costs, which are important considerations for anyone weighing the 2022 BMW 3 Series against its strengths.

The features on this series BMW are phenomenal. Looks like it will hug the ground in those tight turns. The body style is amazing on this car. Perfect for your everyday car or just your Sunday outings. Only thing it's missing Is me behind the wheel. I wouldn't really compare it to another series. It's in a class of it's own. Awesome car!!

Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its sporty performance, great handling, stylish design, fuel efficiency, and quick acceleration. That lines up with the car’s use case as a luxury sports sedan that still prioritizes driving enjoyment while remaining practical for everyday use. The main trade-offs are that a manual transmission is not available and the stereo is lacking.
With 34.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise for the car’s long-term appeal, strong performance, and efficient operation. BMW’s performance notes reinforce that sense of confidence, describing the drivetrain as smooth and the transmission as flawless. BMW also includes free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
Some owners do mention oil leak issues and high maintenance costs, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters if you want to limit long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on higher-mileage examples or cars with a long option list. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s equipment matches what you expect from the trim and packages. If you’re shopping a performance-oriented example, make sure the tires, brakes, and suspension components show normal wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes the 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3. The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the 330e adds plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology with 23 miles of estimated electric driving range. The M340i adds a turbocharged six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid technology, dynamic tuning, and a more athletic setup, while the M3 is the high-performance version. The base setup is light on advanced safety tech, so you may want to look for a better-equipped example if that matters to you.
- Powertrain: The 330i and 330e use a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the M340i uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The M340i is rated at 382 horsepower and 368 pound-feet of torque, and BMW says it can reach 60 mph in 4.4 seconds.
- Safety package: Active Guard includes forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. The optional Driving Assistance package adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
- Infotainment: Live Cockpit Professional is standard and includes a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display, and navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and BMW also includes Connected Package Pro with Remote Services and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The M340i returned 24.9 mpg on the evaluation route and is rated at 26 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series is offered in 4 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i, and M3.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the entry point if you want the core 3 Series experience with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine and the car’s easy-to-use tech. It makes the most sense if you want the least expensive path into the lineup.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the added efficiency-minded character that comes with it. It suits you best if you want a 3 Series with a more fuel-conscious angle.
- M340i: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the turbocharged inline-six, mild-hybrid technology, and the strongest performance balance in the range. It also brings the most compelling mix of speed, handling, and everyday usability.
- M3: Pick this only if you want the highest-performance version and are willing to pay for it. It is the most specialized choice in the lineup.
For safety, the standard package is modest, while the optional Driving Assistance and Driving Assistance Professional packages add the more advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,763 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,462, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $28,551 sits slightly below last year's $30,685.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper future resale gains if you sell soon. The current range also shows that values have settled into a fairly tight band, which usually points to a more stable market than a rapidly appreciating one. If you maintain the car well and keep mileage reasonable, you should be in a better position to preserve value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2022 BMW 3 Series earns a Top Safety Pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings across the board from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, including rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
BMW’s standard safety tech package includes Active Guard, which brings forward-collision warning, pedestrian and cyclist detection, city-speed automatic emergency braking, and lane-departure warning. If you want blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, you need the optional Driving Assistance package. The Driving Assistance Professional package adds lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, evasive-steering assist, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, and Emergency Stop Assistant.
One important caveat is that the IIHS award requires the optional adaptive LED headlights with Laserlight, so not every 3 Series qualifies for the accolade.
Should I buy a 2022 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the familiar 3 Series formula with standard digital instrumentation and navigation.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,347, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,551 average.
- It adds the 330e plug-in hybrid to the lineup.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $34,575, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,551 average.
- It brings a mid-cycle refresh with sportier styling and updated technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, performance, and available inventory, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value path. If you want newer styling and updated tech, it makes sense to stretch to the 2023.
