How much does the 2021 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 6.57% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 445 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC40 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The XC40 stands out for its stylish design, premium-feeling cabin, and multiple powertrain options. For 2021, the big story is the addition of the all-electric Recharge, which brings an Android-based operating system and over-the-air software updates, while gasoline versions continue alongside it largely unchanged.

The trade-offs are clear: you give up some cargo space, and the Recharge is priced at the high end of the lineup.

Good and great deals account for 34.8% of listings, so you have a reasonable chance of finding a competitive price if you shop carefully.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC40’s appeal is rooted in its premium design, thoughtful cabin execution, and safety-first engineering. The 2021 model also benefits from Volvo’s focus on software and driver-assist updates in the Recharge, which adds a more modern ownership experience to the lineup.

Its performance and ownership profile suggest a well-developed small luxury SUV rather than a rushed redesign. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained properly and matches the equipment and powertrain you want.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, even when the market looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection is especially useful if you’re comparing gasoline versions with the Recharge, since the two powertrains bring different ownership considerations. Focus on overall condition, equipment completeness, and whether the features you want are standard on the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The gasoline XC40 models are available in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, while the Recharge is a single-trim model with standard AWD. The Recharge’s styling changes are subtle, which suits buyers who want an electric crossover without a flashy look.
• Powertrain: The gasoline lineup uses a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with either 187 hp in the T4 or 248 hp in the T5, both paired with an eight-speed automatic. The Recharge uses dual electric motors for AWD and delivers 402 hp, with a quieter, comfort-oriented character and one-pedal driving.
• Safety package: The gasoline XC40 includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional upgrades add traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist. The Recharge gets Volvo’s latest sensor suite, but that does not add new features today.
• Infotainment: The Recharge uses Android Automotive OS with Google Assistant and Google Maps built in, plus a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and OTA update capability for vehicle software.
• Fuel efficiency: The T4 is rated at 26 mpg combined, the T5 at 25 mpg combined, and the Recharge at 79 MPGe combined with a 208-mile range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is offered in 4 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, and Recharge.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point for the gasoline XC40 lineup, and it makes the most sense if you want the XC40’s style and safety focus without paying for extra luxury touches.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier appearance and a more expressive version of the XC40, while still staying within the gasoline lineup.
• Inscription: This is the best fit if you want the most upscale feel from the gasoline models and value a more premium presentation.
• Recharge: This is the one to buy if you want the electric XC40, built around the 402-hp dual-motor setup, Android Automotive OS, OTA updates, and standard AWD. It is the best-value choice only if you specifically want the EV powertrain and can live with its higher price and shorter range.

The gasoline XC40 comes with a long list of standard safety features, while Pilot Assist and several other driver aids remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 445 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.57% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,885, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $22,070 sits slightly below last year's $23,623.

That decline suggests the XC40 has softened enough to be more approachable for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to move the car. The current range still leaves room for well-kept examples to hold value better than average, especially if they are equipped and presented well.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also received a five-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five stars in frontal-crash and side-crash tests, and four stars in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The gasoline XC40 comes with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.

The Recharge uses Volvo’s latest sensor suite and software, but those updates do not add new features today. The main caveat is that the published crash-test results apply to the gasoline XC40, not the Recharge.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 34.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.57% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 XC40’s standout change is the addition of the all-electric Recharge, which brings Android Automotive OS, OTA updates, and a new EV option to the lineup.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40 with the most important 2021 update, this is the year to target, especially if the Recharge’s electric powertrain or the model’s updated tech matters to you. If you’re mainly shopping on price, a nearby year may still make sense, but the 2021 gives you the broadest mix of modern features and strong market availability.
