How much does the 2021 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 6.47% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 464 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable selection to compare.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC40 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The XC40 stands out for its stylish design, premium-feeling cabin, and multiple powertrain options. The gasoline versions carry over largely unchanged, while the Recharge adds an all-electric option with an Android-based operating system and over-the-air software updates.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and, for the Recharge, a high price. Even so, the XC40’s mix of style, technology, and versatility makes it a strong fit if you want a small luxury crossover with a polished feel.

With 38.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC40’s appeal is reinforced by its premium materials, thoughtful design, and safety-focused engineering. The gasoline model carries over largely unchanged, while the Recharge adds a battery safety cage and a redesigned front crash structure, which points to careful attention to durability and crash protection.

Volvo also backs the XC40 with a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a four-year, 50,000-mile powertrain warranty, plus an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty for the Recharge. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is making sure the specific vehicle has been maintained properly and, if applicable, that the electric model’s battery and charging system are in good shape.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, because accident-free status does not replace a full inspection. Focus on the condition of the cabin, cargo area, and technology features, since the XC40’s premium appeal depends heavily on how well those systems have held up. If you’re considering the Recharge, pay extra attention to charging equipment, software behavior, and battery-related documentation.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The gasoline XC40 models are available in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, while the Recharge is a single-trim setup with standard all-wheel drive. The Recharge’s simpler configuration and model-specific styling make it the one to compare most carefully against the gasoline versions.
• Powertrain: The gasoline lineup uses a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with either 187 horsepower in the T4 or 248 horsepower in the T5. The Recharge adds dual electric motors, standard AWD, and 402 hp, so you should decide whether you want traditional gasoline power or the stronger electric setup.
• Safety package: The gasoline XC40 comes with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional features include traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.
• Infotainment: The Recharge gets Android Automotive OS with Google Assistant and Google Maps built in, plus a 9-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. It also includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and OTA update capability for vehicle software.
• Fuel efficiency: The T4 is rated at 26 mpg combined, the T5 at 25 mpg combined, and the Recharge at 79 MPGe combined with a 208-mile range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is offered in 4 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point for the gasoline XC40 lineup, and it makes sense if you want the XC40’s style and safety story without paying for the upper trims. It’s the trim to start with if value matters most.
• R-Design: Choose this if you want a sportier look and a more expressive version of the XC40 without moving into the top trim. It suits you if appearance matters more than maximum luxury.
• Inscription: This is the most upscale gasoline trim, so it’s the one to consider if you want the most premium-feeling XC40 with the strongest luxury emphasis.
• Recharge: This is the electric version and the most distinctive XC40 in the lineup, with standard AWD, Android Automotive OS, OTA updates, and model-specific styling. It’s the best fit if you want the newest tech and an EV powertrain, but it also carries the highest price.

The gasoline XC40 includes a long list of standard safety features, while the Recharge adds Volvo’s latest sensor suite and software foundation for future driver aids.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.

• Deal availability: 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 464 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 81.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,877, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $22,193 sits slightly below last year's $23,729.

That decline suggests the XC40 has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier for a future seller to attract interest if the vehicle is well kept. The current pricing also shows that the model still holds meaningful market value rather than dropping sharply.

For you as a seller, that means condition and equipment matter a lot. A clean history, strong maintenance records, and desirable features should help your listing stand out in a market where shoppers still have choices.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 received the highest “Top Safety Pick+” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It also received a five-star overall crash-test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five stars in frontal-crash and side-crash tests, and four stars in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The gasoline XC40 comes with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.

The Recharge uses Volvo’s latest sensor suite and software, but the crash-test ratings cited above do not apply to it. That means you should pay close attention to the specific version you’re buying, especially if you want the most established safety-test results.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 XC40 stands out because it adds an all-electric powertrain option, along with Android Automotive OS and over-the-air software updates.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40 with the biggest year-over-year change, the 2021 model is the one to target because it adds the electric Recharge and the newer tech foundation. If you’re mainly shopping for the lowest possible price, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2021 gives you a strong mix of value, safety, and updated technology.
