How much does the 2021 Volvo XC40 cost?

Prices have softened 7.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 467 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 a good car?

Yes — the 2021 Volvo XC40 earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.

The XC40 stands out for its stylish design, premium-feeling cabin, and multiple powertrain options. It also brings a more modern tech story for this model year, especially in the Recharge version, which adds an Android-based operating system and over-the-air software updates.

The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and the Recharge model’s expensive pricing. If you want a compact luxury crossover with a polished feel and a broad lineup, it fits that brief well; if utility or value is your top priority, you should weigh those compromises carefully.

35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The XC40’s appeal is rooted in its premium materials, thoughtful design, and safety-first engineering. The gasoline model’s strong crash-test results and the Recharge’s battery-protection structure point to a vehicle built with durability and occupant protection in mind.

Its performance story also supports confidence for everyday use, with a well-rounded powertrain lineup and a comfort-focused driving character. The Recharge adds one-pedal driving and a scalable sensor suite, which suggests a modern ownership experience built around software and driver aids.

For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained properly and matches the equipment and powertrain you expect.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, since accident-free status is not the same as a clean mechanical record. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with advanced tech features.

Focus on overall condition, including the cabin, infotainment behavior, and any signs that the vehicle’s premium features have not aged well. If you’re shopping the Recharge, pay extra attention to charging equipment and software-related functionality.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The gasoline XC40 models are available in Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription, while the Recharge is a single-trim model with standard AWD. The cabin is minimalist and premium-feeling, but the Recharge’s distinct styling cues and model-specific wheels set it apart from gasoline versions.
• Powertrain: The gasoline lineup uses a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder with either 187 hp in the T4 or 248 hp in the T5, both paired with an eight-speed automatic. The Recharge adds dual electric motors, AWD, and 402 hp, along with one-pedal driving and a 2,000-pound towing capacity when properly equipped.
• Safety package: The gasoline XC40 includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional features include traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.
• Infotainment: The Recharge gets Android Automotive OS with Google Assistant and Google Maps, plus a 9-inch touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless-style built-in Google features, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and OTA update capability for vehicle functions.
• Fuel efficiency: The gasoline T4 is rated at 26 mpg combined, 23 mpg city, and 32 mpg highway. The T5 is rated at 25 mpg combined, 22 mpg city, and 30 mpg highway. The Recharge is rated at 79 MPGe combined with a 208-mile range.

Which 2021 Volvo XC40 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 is offered in 4 trim levels: Momentum, R-Design, Inscription, Recharge.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the entry point for the gasoline XC40 lineup, and it gives you the core Volvo design and safety experience without moving up to the pricier appearance-focused trims. It makes the most sense if you want the XC40’s style and standard equipment at the lowest starting point.
• R-Design: This trim is the better pick if you want a sportier look and a more expressive version of the XC40 without changing the basic formula. It suits you if appearance matters and you want a step up from the base model.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want the most upscale-feeling gasoline XC40. It’s the trim to consider if you care most about a more premium presentation and are willing to pay for it.
• Recharge: This is the standout choice if you want the electric XC40 experience, including the Android-based operating system, OTA updates, and standard AWD. It’s the best fit if you want the most advanced tech story in the lineup, but it also carries the highest price.

The gasoline XC40 includes a long list of standard safety features, and Pilot Assist is available as an option.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volvo XC40?

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to find value if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 467 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.26% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,877, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Volvo XC40's resale value?

The current average of $21,918 sits slightly below last year's $23,634.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make it harder for future sellers to command top dollar unless the vehicle is especially well kept. If you’re planning to resell later, condition and equipment will matter more because the broader price trend is already working against appreciation.

The good news is that the XC40 still has a premium image, and that can help support demand over time. Well-maintained examples with desirable features should remain easier to move than more ordinary compact crossovers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Volvo XC40 safe?

The 2021 Volvo XC40 earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and five-star overall ratings from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in frontal-crash and side-crash tests and four-star ratings in rollover crash tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The gasoline XC40 comes standard with lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, rear parking sensors, hill-start assist, and hill-descent control. Optional safety tech includes traffic-sign recognition, reverse automatic emergency braking, a driver-alertness monitor, run-off road mitigation, oncoming lane mitigation, and Pilot Assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centering.

The Recharge uses Volvo’s latest sensor suite and software, but the gasoline model’s crash-test results do not automatically carry over to the electric version. That means you should pay close attention to the exact powertrain and trim you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Volvo XC40 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.26% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The big story for this year is the addition of the all-electric Recharge model, along with Android Automotive OS and over-the-air update capability.

The bottom line: If you want the XC40 with the most important 2021 update and you’re comfortable shopping a market with moderate deal availability, this is the year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you can still find value by focusing on the gasoline models and shopping the lower end of the price range.
