CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
overall

Summary
With 1,197 currently listed for sale and an average price of $22,246, 33.0% of 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sports for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.83 / 10.
81.6% of 2021 Atlas Cross Sport models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport stands out as a two-row, five-seat version of the Volkswagen Atlas family crossover, giving it a more compact mission than the larger three-row SUV it is based on. It also arrives in a segment that includes newer rivals such as the Toyota Venza, Honda Passport, and Chevrolet Blazer, while Volkswagen also names the Jeep Grand Cherokee as a competitor. For buyers who want a midsize crossover with a more distinctive shape, the Cross Sport’s stylish design is one of its clearest strengths.
For 2021, the Cross Sport gets only a few updates, but they are meaningful ones: VW’s new MIB3 infotainment system for most trim levels, plus Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. That helps reinforce its appeal as an easy-to-use, tech-friendly crossover, and Volkswagen offers it in eight trim levels with a choice of front-wheel drive or 4Motion all-wheel drive, along with four-cylinder or six-cylinder engines. Owners also praise its handling, stylish appearance, spacious interior, and comfort, though some note that fuel economy could be better and that there have been minor complaints about noise in certain areas.
At the same time, the Cross Sport is not without drawbacks. Its interior materials can feel cheap, the transmission can be irritating, and the ride quality is poor. That mix of strengths and weaknesses makes the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport appealing to shoppers who value style, available technology, and a roomy cabin, but who are willing to accept some compromises in refinement.

Purchased the Atlas Cross Sport SE with V6 and technology package. Love the way the car handles! Impressive outside appearance. I have the Aurora Red and get compliments on the color almost daily Lots of technology and features for the money! Gas mileage isnt as good as I would have hoped but its not horrible. After 2 weeks, there is a wind noise around the driver window but that is the only complaint so far. For a beefy looking SUV, the horn is weak. lol Overall, very impressive vehicle!

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $22,246 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,962 |
| Year-Round High | $24,304 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,299 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.45% |
Prices have softened 8.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,204 listings available, which gives you a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.33/5 user rating and a 5.83/10 expert rating. The model scores 7/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its handling, stylish appearance, spacious interior, and comfort. They also appreciate the technology features, and many say it works well for families and long trips.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior materials can feel cheap, the transmission can be irritating, and the ride quality is poor.
For you, that means the Cross Sport makes the most sense if you value style, space, and easy-to-use tech more than refinement. It also sits in a segment with newer rivals, so its appeal depends on whether you prioritize its distinctive shape over a more polished driving experience.
33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, long-trip friendliness, and the kind of ownership experience you can count on. That same theme shows up in the way owners describe its spacious cabin and technology, which suggests it holds up well as a family hauler.
The expert notes also reinforce that it is easy to live with, especially if you want straightforward controls and a roomy interior. Volkswagen’s two years of free scheduled maintenance and four-year, 50,000-mile new-vehicle warranty add some ownership reassurance if the coverage still applies.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the model’s compromises in ride quality, transmission behavior, and cabin materials.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, because the Cross Sport’s value depends heavily on whether the cabin, drivetrain, and electronics have been cared for well.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S trim keeps the older MIB2 system with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get the newer MIB3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen. Lower trims also use 18-inch wheels, and the interior materials are described as cheap even on higher trims, so pay close attention to cabin finish and equipment gaps.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four or an optional 3.6-liter V6, both paired with an eight-speed automatic. The four-cylinder is rated at 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the V6 makes 276 hp and 266 lb-ft.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available on SEL and higher trims, while some competitors make features like adaptive cruise control standard.
- Infotainment: Base S models use a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while all other trims get an 8-inch screen with MIB3. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned, but Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, multiple-device pairing, and updated voice recognition are included with the newer system.
- Fuel efficiency: The four-cylinder returns 22 mpg combined with either FWD or AWD. The V6 returns 20 mpg combined with FWD and 19 mpg combined with AWD.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is offered in 8 trim levels: S, SE, SE with Technology, SE with Technology R-Line, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but it keeps the older 6.5-inch infotainment system and the most basic equipment. It makes sense only if you want the lowest price and can live without the newer tech and added convenience features.
- SE: This is the first step up if you want the newer MIB3 system with an 8-inch touchscreen, plus more charging and connectivity convenience. It’s the better starting point for most shoppers because it adds meaningful usability without jumping too far in price.
- SE with Technology: This trim adds more of the equipment that makes the Cross Sport feel better equipped day to day, including the larger wheel setup and additional convenience content. It’s the best-value choice if you want a more complete version without moving into luxury pricing.
- SE with Technology R-Line: Choose this if you want the same equipment as the SE with Technology but prefer the sportier exterior styling treatment. It’s mainly about appearance rather than a major capability upgrade.
- SEL: This is where the Cross Sport starts to feel more upscale, with the Digital Cockpit and access to more advanced driver-assistance features. It suits you if you want a more premium-feeling cabin and more tech.
- SEL R-Line: This adds the sportier exterior look to the SEL’s upgraded equipment. It’s for buyers who want the richer feature set and the more aggressive styling.
- SEL Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the most complete mix of comfort and technology, including the Fender premium audio system. It’s the strongest choice if you want the Cross Sport at its most fully equipped.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end version, combining the richest equipment with the R-Line appearance package and larger wheels. It’s the one to buy if you want the most upscale presentation and don’t mind paying for it.
Safety-package note: Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are limited to SEL and higher trims, and the better headlight ratings are also reserved for SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,204 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,962, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport's resale value?
The current average of $22,246 sits slightly below last year's $24,299.
That decline suggests the model has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if prices stabilize. If you buy at the right number now, you may have less downside left than you would with a newer, pricier alternative.
The market also appears reasonably active, which matters because a vehicle with broad shopper interest is usually easier to resell. Strong owner satisfaction can help keep demand steady when it’s time for you to move on.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport safe?
The 2021 VW Atlas Cross Sport earned top “Good” scores in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests, but with mixed headlight ratings. It also earned a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with five-star ratings for side crash tests and four-star ratings for frontal and rollover crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are available on SEL and higher trims, and those trims also get the better headlight ratings.
One caveat is the Marginal IIHS rating for child-seat anchor ease of use, and most trims also get Marginal headlight ratings.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds MIB3 infotainment plus Travel Assist and Emergency Assist for most trims.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $20,342, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $22,246 average.
- It emphasizes styling, space, and standard safety features.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,885, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,246 average.
- It adds standard digital instrumentation and makes AWD standard on most trims.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and updated tech, the 2021 is the smart default. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer standard equipment and are willing to pay more.
