Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with a refined, upscale presentation. It arrives with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, giving it the feel of a showcase for the brand’s capabilities and technologies. Its stylish design and premium interior materials help it project a near-luxury character, while the available equipment can push it even further in that direction.
Practicality is part of the appeal, too, since the Arteon offers plenty of cargo space. It also keeps pricing below $50,000, which may make its upscale look and feature set more approachable than some buyers expect. The tradeoff is that it is described as poor value for money and poor fuel economy, so shoppers drawn to its design and refinement may still want to weigh those drawbacks carefully.

All the driver assistance features you would expect for a never vehicle are in this car minus a front facing camera. The digital dash is a great feature and the auto folding headlights should be on every car. The 268 hp engine is quiet and quick. Apparently subsequent years have a 300 hp engine but mine is fine, no complaints. Trunk is roomy as its a hatchback.

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,470 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,002 |
| Year-Round High | $22,935 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,937 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.40% |
Prices have softened 6.40% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 115 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare before you buy.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon earns 5/5 from users and 8/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
It fits Volkswagen’s flagship-sedan role by leaning into a refined, upscale presentation with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance. The Arteon also brings plenty of cargo space and keeps pricing below $50,000, so you get a near-luxury feel without stepping into a full luxury badge.
The main trade-offs are poor value for money and poor fuel economy. If you want a stylish, premium-feeling sedan with a practical side, it makes sense; if efficiency and bargain pricing matter most, you should look carefully at the alternatives.
About 43.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there’s meaningful shopping room in the market.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon’s appeal comes from its upscale execution: it’s positioned as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, with premium materials, strong tech, and a well-finished cabin. Its powertrain is described as up to the task of moving the car, and the ride is tuned for comfort and highway serenity, which supports a reassuring ownership experience.
Volkswagen also includes a maintenance perk in the ownership package through Car-Net-related services and app-based features, though the core reliability story here is more about the car’s solid presentation and broad equipment than any specific mechanical promise. For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that a premium-feeling model can still carry premium repair and upkeep expectations.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, driver-assistance systems, and the condition of the interior and exterior finishes, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained. Focus on whether the car still feels tight, quiet, and well-kept, because that’s a big part of the Arteon’s value proposition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is FWD only, while the SEL R-Line adds FWD or AWD and the SEL Premium R-Line is AWD only. The base model gives you the core Arteon experience, but the higher trims add more of the near-luxury equipment that helps this car stand out.
- Powertrain: You get one turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. FWD and AWD are both offered, and the EPA figures are 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for FWD or 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for AWD.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rear-view camera. Available systems on SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control with front and rear sensors, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display.
- Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 10-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit display and an 8-inch MIB3 touchscreen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, along with navigation, Bluetooth, HD radio, SiriusXM, and Car-Net app connectivity. SEL Premium R-Line adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA fuel economy is 22 mpg city/32 mpg highway/25 mpg combined for FWD and 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for AWD.
Which 2021 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core style, cabin quality, and standard tech without moving up in price. It’s the trim to consider if you want the look and feel of the car at the lowest cost.
- SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more equipment and can be had with either FWD or AWD. It’s the sweet spot if you want the Arteon’s upscale character with a stronger feature set.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to choose if you want the richest comfort and convenience package. It comes only with AWD and adds the most premium touches.
The SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line also get the expanded safety and driver-assistance features, while the base SE keeps the standard core safety suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
It’s a buyer-friendly moment if you’re shopping this model year, because pricing has eased and the market still offers a decent number of listings to compare.
- Deal availability: 43.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 115 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.40% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 80.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,002, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $21,470 sits slightly below last year's $22,937.
That decline suggests the market has become more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price carefully to stay competitive. The Arteon’s upscale positioning helps it stand out, yet its value story is still shaped by broader market perception and the fact that it sits above the mainstream VW lineup.
If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect your exit value later. The model’s premium feel, cargo space, and strong equipment list should support demand among shoppers who want something distinctive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Available systems on SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control with front and rear sensors, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display. The SEL Premium R-Line adds park assist, rear park distance control, and an overhead view camera.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 43.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.40% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model brings upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds more expressive design, stronger performance, and surprising interior room.
The bottom line: If you want the better-value buy right now, the 2021 is the smarter path because pricing has softened and the market still offers decent inventory. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s added performance and broader appeal, the 2022 is the better upgrade path.
