CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Tesla Model S

Summary
With 487 currently listed for sale and an average price of $45,628.00, 28.3% of 2021 Tesla Model Ss for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Tesla Model S 5 / 5 stars.
85.0% of 2021 Model S models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Tesla Model S stands out as the model’s biggest update yet, bringing the “Palladium” refresh with minor exterior design changes and an all-new interior centered around a yoke steering wheel. It also received an overhauled powertrain with a new battery pack and motors, which Tesla says brought increased efficiency, range, and power. For buyers, that combination is the core appeal: the Model S remains a luxury electric sedan that emphasizes cutting-edge technology and strong performance rather than traditional automotive convention.
In this version, the base Long Range model uses dual electric motors and all-wheel drive, while the Plaid adds three electric motors and standard AWD. Tesla rates the Long Range at 405 miles of range and the Plaid at 348 miles, and the Plaid is listed with 1,020 horsepower. Standard equipment is extensive, including vegan leatherette seats, heated front and rear seats, ventilated front seats, adaptive air suspension, a glass roof, wireless phone charging, a premium 22-speaker audio system, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot monitor. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available at all, and some shoppers may also be hesitant about the yoke steering wheel design.
Owners of the 2021 Tesla Model S are especially enthusiastic about its acceleration, interior quality, and advanced technology, which matches the car’s overall mission well. That said, the same feedback also reflects one of its more polarizing traits: the steering yoke. For shoppers who want a fast, high-tech electric sedan with a distinctive cabin and a long list of standard features, the 2021 Model S remains one of Tesla’s most recognizable offerings.

If your looking for the absolute best tech in a vehicle, you will find it in a Tesla. I felt the year, miles, and condition was a fair price. It is extremely hard to compare any Tesla to any other vehicle brands out there. Tesla did a very good job at being original. This is my second Tesla . My first was a Model 3 Performance and now I have a Model S Plaid. For me, it would be very hard to go back to the other brands.

The car is fantastic, truly unlike any other car, and it just gets better with updates. I’m neutral on the yoke, but I will probably replace it at some point. Aside from the steering. wheel/yoke, it is the best car that I’ve ever driven. Between the auto pilot and full self driving, to the media , safety features, and incredible acceleration, I simply don’t think there is a better car you can buy.

2021 marked the first re-fresh of the Model S since its inception. My previous Model S was a 2016 P90D ludicrous. The 2021 felt like an entirely different car. With several major upgrades: • The seats were substantially upgraded providing more stability during cornering, heating and cooling seat ventilation was added. The whole interior was upgraded. • New “ductless” HVAC system that allows you to direct air virtually anywhere—crazy. • The dash was shortened to move the driver closer to the windshield increasing visibility • The suspension was improved with more options to customize. • The sound system was significantly upgraded to 950+ watts and 23 speakers—it is truly an amazing sound that rivals any headphones I have used. • Significantly quieter cabin with a new window system and self-cancelling noise reduction that lowers tire noise.

Is the 2021 Tesla Model S reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on its driving experience, upgrades, and overall quality. That kind of response suggests the Model S can be a reassuring choice if you want a used EV you can count on for the long haul.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the core appeal and more about making sure the specific car you choose has been well cared for and remains in strong condition.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still review the history report carefully and confirm there are no prior collisions, title issues, or unresolved repairs. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether all major features work as expected.
Because this model year leans heavily on technology and a distinctive cabin layout, you should pay extra attention to the condition of the interior and the usability of the steering setup. If anything feels off during a test drive, treat that as a priority item before you buy.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Tesla Model S?
This looks like a moderate market where selective buyers can still find value if they shop carefully.
- Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 496 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $45,420.54, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Tesla Model S's resale value?
The current average of $45,606 sits slightly below last year's $46,143.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean future resale gains are more limited if prices continue to ease. For a seller, the key takeaway is that strong condition and the right equipment will matter more when it comes time to list the car.
Because this model year still has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal among EV shoppers, it should remain easier to move than a less distinctive used luxury sedan. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2021 Tesla Model S or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2021 if you want the refreshed Model S experience, strong owner satisfaction, and a market that still offers some deal opportunities. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby older year may be worth considering, but the 2021 is the better fit if you want the updated design and the strongest overall appeal from this generation.
