CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 837 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,051, 31.7% of 2021 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
72.2% of 2021 WRX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru WRX stands out by turning everyday driving into something more engaging without giving up the practicality of a sedan. It trades daily driving refinement for daily driving engagement, and it can suitably seat four or more. That combination makes it appealing to shoppers who want sharp cornering and brisk acceleration in a package that is more sensible than a true sports car.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fun to drive, it has a powerful engine, and it comes with standard all-wheel drive. Those traits give it the kind of all-weather confidence and performance character that help define the WRX’s appeal. At the same time, it is not trying to be a luxury or tech-forward choice, and its cabin quality and technology are part of the tradeoff.
The compromises are just as clear. The 2021 Subaru WRX has poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and outdated technology. For buyers who value driving enjoyment above refinement, those drawbacks may be acceptable, but they are important limitations to keep in mind.

Great car all around. Clutch is stiff and the bite point is high, so it was an adjustment coming from something that was the opposite. Very quick, very little lag in the turbo. Feels faster than it is which makes it fun. Cobb intake was already installed at purchase (low miles though) had to tune to account for it but made the car feel smoother and more responsive. Likely will be upgrading further, but not pushing too far to failure.

I have the Limited. It has most everything I needed. Would like to have had power Front passenger seat. I would have been happy with the Base model which costs a lot less - however, none were available. Compared it to Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Veloster. This car has what I wanted most; an manual transmission.

Its performance setup is also relatively simple compared with more tech-heavy rivals, which can be a plus for long-term ownership. Still, you should expect a used WRX to reward careful maintenance and a close look at how hard it was driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru WRX?
At 73% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and make sure the car’s accident record, service history, and ownership pattern all line up. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important here because the WRX’s appeal depends heavily on how it was driven and maintained. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car still feels tight and well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base WRX gives you 17-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, manual seats, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth, satellite radio, USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, heated seats, pushbutton start, auto on/off headlights, and a larger 7-inch screen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, a 10-way power driver’s seat, LED fog lights, and adaptive steering-responsive LED headlights.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual is standard, and a CVT is available. The manual returns 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined, while the CVT returns 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, and lane-departure warning, but it is available only on the Premium and Limited trims with the CVT. Adaptive high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available only on the Limited. Every trim includes a tire-pressure monitoring system and traction control.
- Infotainment: The base car uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 7-inch screen. Both support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is straightforward to use. Navigation and a Harman Kardon premium stereo are available on the Limited with the option package.
- Fuel efficiency: The WRX is not fuel-efficient, and premium fuel is recommended. The manual is the more efficient setup at 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX formula at the lowest entry point. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the turbocharged engine, and the core infotainment setup with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you give up the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated seats, pushbutton start, fog lights, larger wheels, and the bigger 7-inch screen. It is also the trim that opens the door to the CVT and the EyeSight safety suite, so it is the one to target if you want more everyday usability.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort and the most available safety equipment. It adds leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, adaptive LED headlights, and access to the option package with navigation, premium audio, and additional driver-assistance features.
The safety package is only available with the CVT on Premium and Limited trims, and the Limited is the only trim that can add the full set of extra driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru WRX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 853 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,221, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $22,995 sits slightly below last year's $23,578.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because the WRX appeals to buyers who want performance and all-weather practicality, clean examples should still draw interest. If you keep the car in strong shape and avoid signs of abuse, you improve your odds of holding value better than a rougher example.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Subaru WRX safe?
The WRX does not come standard with any of the latest safety features.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight system includes adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, and lane-departure warning, but it is available only on the Premium and Limited trims with the CVT. That means if you want the latest driver-assistance tech, the manual transmission is a compromise you need to accept.
Adaptive high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available only on the Limited. Every trim does include a tire-pressure monitoring system and traction control.
Should I buy a 2021 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the WRX formula focused on sharp handling, brisk acceleration, and standard all-wheel drive.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,474, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $22,995 average.
- It emphasizes rally-bred performance in a practical four-door package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,218, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $22,995 average.
- It sharpens the formula with updated powertrain, suspension, and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of price, performance, and available inventory, the 2021 is the main year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the cheaper path into the same basic WRX appeal. If you want a newer take and are willing to pay more, the 2022 is the better upgrade path.
