Why it stands out
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE stands out as a midsize luxury SUV that leans hard into comfort and technology. Redesigned for 2020, it is described as having comfort and technology that border on ridiculous, and it offers multiple powertrain options along with premium interior materials and impressive technology. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a traditional luxury SUV experience with a particularly upscale cabin and a wide range of choices.
At the same time, the 2021 GLE is not without drawbacks. Its styling is described as uninspired, advanced safety features are not standard, and the base engine is underwhelming. Owner feedback also points to strong praise for the technology, comfort, customizable features, and high-quality sound system, while some shoppers may find it overpriced and note that performance may not match competitors at the same price point.

This SUV is a masterpiece from MB, the luxury and sporty performance is perfectly on point. Wouldn’t want any other SUV with a similar price point.

For me , the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE- Class is the perfect option. It’s seating and cargo capacity are not that of the larger SUVs like the Escalade, Navigator, Expedition, etc…, but it feels like a large SUV and the cargo capacity is good despite not having the extra length. The year model is just right because the prices typically reflect the “new car” depreciation mostly gone and the technology in the car is very similar, if not identical, to the current 2023 models. I went with the AMG GLE 63 s for the best this class offers at a price that is more in-line with the 350 or 450 models. I don’t regret my purchase at all. Thanks Car Gurus!!

Note: I have a GLE53 AMG The ride quality is okay. You feel bumps but overall its alright.. just not as soft as a range rover.. however thats only because it is an AMG and the suspension is meant to be a little harsh but you wont have the same experience in the 350, 450 or 580. I wouldnt recommend the 350 though because its a small 4 cylinder with not that much horsepower, the GLE weighs a lot so that would be straining the engine and overall not good for long term reliability, therefore go with the 450. Technology is great in the new 2021 GLE, very very customizable and WAY above its Japanese rivals. The ambient lighting is top notch and is simply the best in the industry, its a good conversation starter for friends in your vehicle and it is a nice mood setter. I wish that the infotainment had a rotary wheel like my 2016 GLE450 AMG Coupe and 2019 GLS63 AMG both have. Overall I would recommend to anyone.

Prices have softened 10.13% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,579 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Performance, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its technology, comfort, customizable features, and high-quality sound system. The cabin and feature set also stand out as especially upscale, which fits the GLE’s luxury-SUV mission.
The trade-offs are that some shoppers find it overpriced, and the performance may not feel as strong as competitors at the same price point. The overview also frames it as a comfort- and technology-first choice, so if you want a traditional luxury SUV with a richly appointed interior, it fits that brief well.
With 37.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on comfort, technology, and a generally trouble-free ownership experience. The expert performance notes also emphasize a base suspension setup that makes sense for reliability because it avoids expensive complexity.
The cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that the GLE’s sophistication comes with a premium price, so long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about the potential cost of maintaining a highly engineered luxury SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re considering a higher-trim or more complex version with more equipment to evaluate. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the features you want are actually present on the specific vehicle.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base GLE 350 uses an ordinary coil-sprung setup, while higher versions add more complex suspension hardware and more upscale cabin execution. The interior is described as a masterpiece in quality, layout, colors, and textures, but you may need to move up the lineup to feel truly rich.
- Powertrain: The GLE 350 uses a 255-hp turbocharged engine, while the GLE 450 steps up to a turbo 3.0-liter inline-six with 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. The AMG versions add more power, with the GLE 53 using an electric supercharger and the GLE 580 and GLE 63 S bringing twin-turbo V8 power.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, and forward emergency braking. Adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, semi-automated control, and 360-degree cameras are optional, so check carefully for feature gaps.
- Infotainment: The main display is a 12-inch touchscreen with Interior Assistant, and it works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system also supports touchpad and thumbpad control, plus a natural voice assistant.
- Fuel efficiency: The GLE 450 returns 21/26/23 mpg, the GLE 350 4Matic returns 19/26/22 mpg, and the GLE 580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined. The AMG GLE 53 Coupe averaged 16 mpg in testing.
Which 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE trim should I buy?
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE is offered in 8 trim levels: GLE 350, GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450, AMG GLE 53, GLE 580, AMG GLE 63 S, AMG GLE 53 Coupe, AMG GLE 63 S Coupe.
Here's the short version:
- GLE 350: This is the entry point, and it’s the least expensive way into the lineup. It uses the ordinary coil-sprung setup, but the base engine is described as underwhelming, so this trim makes the most sense if you want the GLE experience at the lowest price and can live without the stronger powertrains.
- GLE 350 4Matic: This is the better-value choice for many shoppers because it adds all-wheel drive while staying below the more expensive six- and eight-cylinder models. It keeps the core GLE comfort and technology story intact, but with more traction confidence than the rear-drive base version.
- GLE 450: This is the sweet spot if you want the strongest balance of power, efficiency, and everyday luxury. The turbo inline-six brings a meaningful jump in output, and the efficiency figures are better than the four-cylinder model.
- AMG GLE 53: Choose this if you want sharper performance and AMG-specific tuning without jumping all the way to the most expensive V8 models. The electric supercharger and AMG driving modes make it the enthusiast’s middle ground.
- GLE 580: This is the step for buyers who want V8 power and a more effortless feel. It delivers strong output, but it also pushes the price higher and doesn’t solve the value concerns that follow the lineup upward.
- AMG GLE 63 S: This is the top choice if outright performance matters most. It brings the most power in the standard SUV lineup, along with the most aggressive AMG hardware and braking setup.
- AMG GLE 53 Coupe: Pick this if you want the coupe body style and AMG performance in a more expressive package. It keeps the high-tech, high-power character but trades some practicality for style.
- AMG GLE 63 S Coupe: This is the most extreme and most expensive version, aimed at buyers who want the coupe shape and maximum AMG performance in one vehicle.
Advanced safety features are not standard, so check the exact equipment list on any trim you’re considering.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,579 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.13% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,612, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE's resale value?
The current average of $38,669 sits slightly below last year's $43,029.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. A softer price trend often means future sellers need to be more competitive on condition, mileage, and equipment to stand out.
For you, that means the best resale outcomes will likely come from well-kept examples with desirable features and strong documentation. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE safe?
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE earns the best Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes blind-spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, forward emergency braking, and Pre-Safe Sound. Optional features include adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, evasive steering assist, front cross-traffic braking, semi-automated control, and 360-degree cameras, so you should verify which driver-assistance features are actually installed on the used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 37.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.13% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines comfort, technology, and multiple powertrain choices in a highly upscale cabin.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,547, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $38,669 average.
- It offers a roomier, quieter redesign with a standout infotainment system.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $40,676, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $38,669 average.
- It leans harder into the coupe-style design and expressive styling.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of comfort, technology, and market availability, the 2021 is the primary year to target. If price matters most, the 2020 is the better value path, while the 2022 makes sense only if you specifically want the newer styling direction.
