What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mazda MAZDA3?

At 74.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had body damage or repair work. Focus on panel alignment, paint consistency, tire wear, and any signs that the car was repaired after a collision. Because this model is positioned as a stylish, premium-feeling compact car, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing used examples.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Premium Plus trim adds a more upscale cabin with Nappa leather, plus a high-definition surround-view camera and front and rear parking sensors; the base setup uses leatherette instead.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder pairs with a six-speed automatic and AWD, delivering strong power and smooth, predictable response.
• Safety package: The i-ActiveSense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability and automatic high-beam LED headlights with Adaptive Front Lighting System; Premium Plus adds low-speed reverse automatic braking and Traffic Jam Assist.
• Infotainment: Mazda Connect uses an 8.8-inch display with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services; the screen is not touch-sensitive.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbo model returned 20.4 mpg in testing, with an EPA estimate of 27 mpg in combined driving and a real-world expectation of about 24 mpg.

Which 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 2 trim levels: standard and Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• standard: This is the better-value choice if you want the Mazda3 Turbo’s core strengths without stretching for the top trim. You still get the turbocharged powertrain, AWD, and the upscale driving character that define the car.
• Premium Plus: Choose this if you want the most complete version of the car, especially the richer cabin materials and the added safety equipment. It’s the trim that best matches the Mazda3’s near-luxury ambitions.

The safety package is strongest on Premium Plus, which adds the surround-view camera, parking sensors, reverse automatic braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.

What is the 2021 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $19,503 sits slightly above last year's $19,302.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. The year-over-year gain also indicates that demand has remained steady enough to support pricing rather than push it down sharply.

For you as a future seller, that means a well-kept example should still attract interest, especially if it has the features and condition buyers want. Strong owner satisfaction helps too, because shoppers tend to keep looking for cars with a good reputation.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The main caveat is that Traffic Jam Assist is not a Level 2 system, so you remain in control of steering at all times.

Should I buy a 2021 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 74.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.04% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The turbocharged setup delivers smooth, predictable power with a refined, premium feel.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $17,835, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $19,503 average.
• It emphasizes premium feel, easy-to-use tech, and standard safety features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,782, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $19,503 average.
• It adds the Carbon Edition and a few useful updates, including a standard wiper de-icer on Turbo models.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest blend of style, performance, and owner satisfaction, the 2021 is the one to target. If your priority is saving money, the 2020 is the smarter value play, while the 2022 makes sense if you want the newer updates and are willing to pay more.
