CarGurus Analysis: 2021 GMC Canyon
overall

Summary
With 1,172 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,357.00, 32.1% of 2021 GMC Canyons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 GMC Canyon 4.25 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
78.4% of 2021 Canyon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 GMC Canyon stands out as a refreshed midsize pickup that borrows some of the big-truck look many buyers want without moving up to a full-size model. It gets a freshened face and a new AT4 off-road-inspired trim, but the truck is otherwise largely the same as before. That makes it appealing to shoppers who want a capable, enjoyable pickup with a more lifestyle-oriented feel, especially since midsize trucks often sit in an awkward value position compared with larger alternatives.
Even so, the 2021 GMC Canyon still shows its age in a few important ways. Its interior materials feel cheap, and the back seat is cramped, which can limit everyday comfort for passengers. The base engine is also described as underwhelming. On the positive side, it offers impressive towing and payload ratings, multiple powertrain options, and multiple body styles, giving buyers a useful mix of capability and configuration choices.

First off, I Love my truck, however with that being said, I wish the back up camera had the overhead view. I also don’t understand having to have the radio/computer updated at a cost to the consumer. Otherwise, again, I love my truck.

The expert review also frames it as a capable pickup that can handle weekend adventure use without losing composure in normal driving. The diesel setup is described as efficient, and the truck’s overall character suggests it can be a solid long-term choice if you buy one that has been maintained well.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is that age-related wear and prior use can magnify the Canyon’s rougher edges, so condition matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, because accident-free status is a useful starting point but not a substitute for documentation. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or heavy-use history. Focus on cabin wear, ride quality, and how the truck drives under load, since those are the areas most likely to separate a clean example from a tired one.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Elevation Standard is the base trim and comes with 18-inch gloss-black aluminum wheels, signature LED running lights, the CornerStep rear bumper, black door handles and side mirrors, manually adjustable front seats, power locks, two USB ports, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The Elevation adds LED fog lights, remote start, body-color door handles, a manually sliding rear window, a six-way power driver's seat, automatic climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and aluminum interior accents. The AT4 is the off-road-inspired premium trim level with 17-inch dark metallic aluminum wheels, aggressive all-terrain tires, red tow hooks, off-road suspension, and underbody skid plates. The Denali adds polished aluminum wheels, polished exhaust tip, chrome side steps, chrome door handles, LED bed lighting, a spray-on bed-liner, a four-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, an 8-inch infotainment system, Bose premium audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and a wireless charging pad.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 200 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic, while the optional 3.6-liter V6 makes 308 hp and 275 lb-ft through an eight-speed automatic. A 2.8-liter Duramax four-cylinder turbodiesel is also available with 181 hp and 369 lb-ft through a six-speed automatic. The base gas four-cylinder has to work hard, so the V6 is the better everyday choice, while the diesel is the torque-rich option for towing and efficiency.
- Safety package: The Driver Alert package includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert. It is standard on the Denali and optional on other trim levels. The Canyon also includes a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system.
- Infotainment: The standard 7-inch touchscreen includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the interface is described as crisp and easy to use. An 8-inch screen is optional on the Elevation and AT4 trims and standard on the Denali. The Denali also adds navigation, HD radio, a wireless charging pad, and a 4.2-inch color driver display.
- Fuel efficiency: The optional diesel returns 20 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, 23 combined in rear-wheel-drive form and 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, 22 combined with four-wheel drive. The base four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, 22 combined with rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, 21 combined with four-wheel drive. The gas V6 returns 18 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, 21 combined with rear-wheel drive and 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, 19 combined with four-wheel drive.
Which 2021 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?
The 2021 GMC Canyon is offered in 4 trim levels: Elevation Standard, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.
Here's the short version:
- Elevation Standard: This is the value starting point if you want the Canyon’s big-truck styling and basic tech without paying for extras. It gives you the essentials, but the cabin and equipment list are clearly more basic than the higher trims.
- Elevation: This is the trim to target if you want the best balance of price and everyday convenience. The added remote start, power driver’s seat, climate control, and exterior upgrades make it the most sensible step up for many shoppers.
- AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-inspired setup and the stronger standard V6/4WD combination. It adds the hardware and look that make the Canyon feel more adventurous, and it suits buyers who plan to use the truck for trails or rougher roads.
- Denali: Pick this if you want the most premium Canyon experience, with the richest feature set, the larger screen, Bose audio, heated-and-cooled front seats, and standard Driver Alert package. It is the most upscale choice, but it also sits at the top of the price range.
The Driver Alert package is standard on the Denali and optional on the other trims, so safety-minded shoppers should pay close attention to that equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 GMC Canyon?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,184 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $27,940.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 GMC Canyon's resale value?
The current average of $28,222 sits slightly below last year's $30,338.
That softer pricing suggests the Canyon has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. A lower entry point gives you more room to hold value over time, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim with broad appeal. Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.25/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 GMC Canyon safe?
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring system, front-and-side-impact airbags, traction control, and the Teen Driver system. The available Driver Alert package adds forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking alert, and it is standard on the Denali but optional on other trims. The Denali also adds an upgraded HD backup camera and Hitch Guidance for easier trailer alignment.
Should I buy a 2021 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.25/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds a refreshed face and the new AT4 off-road-inspired trim.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,652, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,222 average.
- It adds a Denali Black Edition package and renames High Elevation as Elevation Premium.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2021 is the smarter buy because it offers the refreshed look, strong owner satisfaction, and lower average pricing. If you’re willing to spend more for a slightly newer truck with a bit more trim variety, the 2022 is the secondary path to consider.
