CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Tacoma

Summary
With 4,230 currently listed for sale and an average price of $31,076, 31.7% of 2020 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Tacoma 4.32 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma stands out as the country’s most popular midsize pickup truck, and it remains the best-selling midsize truck in the US. Its appeal comes from the combination of capability, size, and dependable off-road features that keep buyers coming back, even though it is described as loud, slow, and defiantly old-fashioned. For 2020, it also receives few but important design and technology updates to help move the truck into more modern territory.
Those updates matter because the Tacoma’s strengths are not limited to rugged image alone. The truck is noted for easy-to-use technology and standard advanced safety features, which make it more approachable than its reputation might suggest. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: the interior materials feel cheap, and the base engine is underwhelming. Even so, the 2020 Tacoma’s mix of popularity, off-road credibility, and added tech gives it a distinctive place among midsize pickups.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD off road model is the best in its class. It’s a little more expensive than other models in its class but it’s definitely worth it. The performance, looks, interior features and so on are just incomparable. I’ve owned this truck for 10 days and have had multiple offers for it already. It was parked beside a new Chevrolet Colorado and new Ford Ranger last weekend and I hate to tell the owners but it made them look really bad. Toyota Rules in all aspects. It’s not just my opinion it’s been the worlds opinion for years.

That fits the Tacoma’s role as a rugged midsize pickup with broad appeal, especially if you want capability and a straightforward setup more than luxury-car polish. Good and great deals account for 31.1% of listings, so there are still some attractive opportunities in the market.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.32/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to reliability, and drivers also describe it as practical and dependable over time. The expert assessment reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the Tacoma’s capability and its reputation for being ready for hard use.
The ownership picture is still shaped by the truck’s age and rough-and-ready character, so a careful inspection matters if you want to avoid buying someone else’s wear and tear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has been used off-road or for towing. Focus on body condition, suspension wear, and signs of hard use, since those are the kinds of issues that can hide behind a clean-looking listing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SR and SR5 are the most stripped-down versions, while higher trims add more equipment and a more polished feel. The Limited trim brings 18-inch wheels, and the TRD Pro adds LED headlights with model-specific lighting, a new grille, skid plate, exposed red shocks, black TRD wheels, and all-terrain tires.
- Powertrain: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque and is limited to the SR and SR5. The 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft, is standard on the rest of the lineup, and pairs with a 6-speed automatic; 4WD is standard on the TRD Pro and optional elsewhere.
- Safety package: A standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch touchscreen is standard, while an 8-inch unit with navigation is available. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and a USB-C port are standard, and wireless phone charging and onboard Wi-Fi are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The inline-four returns 20 mpg city, 23 highway, and 21 combined, while the V6 returns 18 city, 22 highway, and 20 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Off-Road, TRD Sport, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the least powerful engine and the fewest extras.
- SR5: This is the better everyday starting point because it opens the door to the V6, which is the engine most buyers will want.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the best-value trim for shoppers who want the Tacoma’s core appeal, including stronger off-road hardware and the kind of capability that defines the truck.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-focused setup and can skip some of the off-road emphasis.
- Limited: This is the comfort-leaning choice, and it adds a more upscale look with 18-inch wheels.
- TRD Pro: This is the most specialized choice, with the most aggressive off-road hardware and unique styling details for buyers who want the top-end trail setup.
The safety package includes standard adaptive cruise control, forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-departure warning, while blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward comparison shopping.
- Deal availability: 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,236 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.82% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $29,327, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $31,024 sits slightly below last year's $31,599.
That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and still leave room for future value retention. For a seller, the current pricing trend is not a red flag, but it does mean you should expect buyers to compare closely against similarly priced trucks.
The Tacoma’s strong reputation and steady demand help support resale value, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.32/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is an IIHS Top Safety Pick and earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and side barrier and pole tests, and five-star ratings for rear passengers in NHTSA testing.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes forward-emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors are optional, so you may want to prioritize a better-equipped trim or package if those features matter to you.
The lower Acceptable result in the small overlap test is the main caveat to keep in mind when you’re comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 31.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.82% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.32/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds important design and technology updates that make the truck feel more modern.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $29,576, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $31,024 average.
- It is a straightforward, durable truck with strong character and excellent value.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,383, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $31,024 average.
- It adds special editions and standard dual-zone climate control on V6 models.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, updated tech, and broad used-market availability, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 can save you money, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer-year updates and are willing to pay more.
