It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, advanced features, and spacious interior, and many also highlight the safety features and handling. The trade-offs are front-seat comfort and interior material quality, which some reviewers find less impressive.
For you, that means the Highlander makes the most sense if you want a family-friendly three-row SUV that emphasizes comfort and ease of use over excitement. It also fits shoppers who value a quiet cabin and a premium-feeling interior more than sharp driving dynamics.
With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market opportunity to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable, trouble-free, and easy to count on for family use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its quiet, smooth, and calm character, which supports the impression of a well-sorted SUV for long-term ownership.
Toyota includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership friction.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 69.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage affected structural, safety, or electrical systems. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with similar prices. Focus your attention on cabin condition, seat comfort, and how well the technology and driver-assistance features work in real-world use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while the higher trims add LED running lamps. The Limited and Platinum also get 20-inch wheels, and the Platinum adds diamond-quilted seat backrests.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It delivers brisk acceleration, smooth operation, and good fuel economy for a large SUV.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on higher trims. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard, along with a head-up display on upper trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The front-wheel-drive model is rated at 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while the all-wheel-drive version is rated at 20 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L is the most stripped-down version, missing the projector-beam LED headlights, fog lights, and the more upscale lighting and wheel upgrades found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the best value in the low $40,000 range, giving you the strongest balance of features and price.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Platinum bring the richest cabin presentation, larger screens, a head-up display, and the most upscale interior details.
- Off-road trim: The Limited and Platinum add selectable driving modes and two off-road modes, but the street-tire setup makes them better suited to daily driving than trail use.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking remain optional.

If you find a listing below $27,001.98, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $27,878 sits slightly below last year's $29,529.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you’re thinking about short-term resale. For a future seller, the current softness means you’ll want to buy carefully and avoid overpaying, because the next owner will likely compare your listing against a fairly broad supply of similar SUVs.
The Highlander’s strong reputation for comfort, safety, and family usefulness should help support demand over time. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment are likely to remain easier to move than less cared-for ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 2020 Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver's knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard.
Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you’ll want to confirm whether a specific used listing has those extras. The main caveat is that some helpful safety equipment is not standard on every trim.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 69.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned for 2020, it emphasizes silent operation, a soft ride, and a premium-feeling interior.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $30,210, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,878 average.
- It adds Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ for more advanced standard driver assistance.
The bottom line: if you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines strong comfort, safety, and a softer price. If you’re willing to spend more for the newer safety package, the 2021 is the better choice for buyers who prioritize the latest standard driver-assistance tech.
