CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Ascent
overall

Summary
With 67 currently listed for sale near Las Vegas, NV and an average price of $26,097, 28.4% of 2020 Subaru Ascents for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Ascent 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is positioned as a family-size SUV that aims to keep current Subaru owners in the fold while also attracting new buyers who need more room. It stands out for offering extra space for people, pets, and cargo, and it pairs that practicality with thoughtful features that make it feel well considered for everyday family use. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Ascent also comes with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its appeal for shoppers who prioritize confidence and peace of mind.
At the same time, the 2020 Ascent is not trying to win over buyers with excitement. Its performance is described as fairly pedestrian, and poor fuel economy is another drawback. Even so, it remains a comfortable, safety-focused SUV with a broad family-friendly mission, which makes it especially appealing to buyers who value utility, standard traction, and a calm driving experience over speed or efficiency.

Roomy and just as luxurious as comparable top of the line mid-size SUVs (like Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander). Safety rating is unbeatable. Smooth drive and great breaking.

Wonderful, beautiful car! Blown away about how well thought out the design of the car was. Very functional and pleasing to the eye ! Kids love it too.

Reviewed a 2020 Subaru Ascent on Jan 15, 2022
I needed a vehicle with a third row option because my family is expanding. I test drove a Toyota Highlander and just felt this suited me better. The third row in the Highlander was uncomfortable and felt like an afterthought. The third row in the Ascent actually feels like a real third row - there is more room and the seats sit back a little at an incline, rather than being uncomfortably upright and with no leg room. I also found it easier to get into the back row in the Ascent, compared to the Highlander. We considered the Toyota Sienna hybrid, but I didnt really want a mini van and I didnt want something ridiculously huge. The Ascent is big, but reasonably so and very comfortable to drive. I think it will be great for long family trips and it feels very safe. Im only 53 and always feel uncomfortable and awkward driving a big beast of an SUV. But the drivers seat and steering wheel all seem to fit me very well. The Ascent also has a really great turn radius, so its more maneuverable than it appears. Lots of great family-friendly features and I also like that it has a good amount of ground clearance. It sits high off the ground but even as Im six months pregnant its still easy enough for me to get in and out of. I only wish they made a hybrid version for better fuel economy and more eco-friendly. However, the mpg is decent, given the size (comparable or even better than my old Honda CRV)

User feedback repeatedly points to roominess, safety features, and family-friendly design, along with a comfortable, well-balanced interior. The overview also frames it as a practical family-size SUV with extra space for people, pets, and cargo, plus standard all-wheel drive for added confidence.
The trade-offs are clear: performance is fairly pedestrian, and fuel economy is a weak point.
With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively if you want the right combination of price and equipment.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also emphasizes that the Ascent feels dependable, with many owners praising its family-friendly usefulness and comfort over time. The expert evaluation reinforces that it is built for confidence in everyday use, especially when weather or road conditions turn challenging.
The safety content also notes free Starlink Safety Plus connected services for three years, which adds useful ownership support.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the model’s everyday annoyances and fuel thirst.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the transmission behavior, brake feel, and overall interior and exterior condition. Focus especially on signs of wear in the cabin, electronics, and any evidence that the vehicle has been used hard or poorly maintained.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Ascent comes with smaller 18-inch wheels and lacks dark-tinted privacy glass, while Premium adds nicer detailing and more features. Limited brings leather seats, and Touring adds premium leather in an exclusive color, a panoramic sunroof, and special wood trim.
- Powertrain: Every Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with a CVT and AWD. It makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, but the setup is described as thirsty and not especially eager.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
- Infotainment: All models include Starlink with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, HD Radio, integrated apps, and a CD player. Premium adds an 8-inch touchscreen, text messaging, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, and connected services, while Touring adds a high-resolution screen and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: The test loop returned 18.9 mpg, and the official EPA estimate is 22 mpg in combined driving for versions with 20-inch wheels.
Which 2020 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Ascent is offered in 4 trim levels: Base, Premium, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point, but it misses some of the nicer visual and equipment upgrades found higher up. It makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable keeping things simple.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the larger 8-inch touchscreen, more features, and access to the blind-spot monitoring package. It also gets you closer to the look and feel of the higher trims without pushing the price too far.
- Limited: Choose this if you want leather seats and the added safety and lighting upgrades, including LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
- Touring: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with premium leather, a panoramic sunroof, special wood trim, navigation, and the most upscale presentation. It makes sense if you want the most content and don’t mind paying for it.
Premium trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Ascent?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,769 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.01% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,079, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $20,166 sits slightly below last year's $22,662.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you can reduce the impact of that softer market. The year’s broad family appeal and standard safety equipment should still help support demand among shoppers who want a practical three-row SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Ascent safe?
The 2020 Subaru Ascent gets a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is Subaru’s camera-based driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Premium trim adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while Limited adds LED steering-responsive headlights with automatic high-beam operation and reverse automatic braking.
The safety content also highlights a rear-seat reminder system and Starlink Safety Plus connected services, including automatic collision notification, SOS emergency calling, and roadside assistance. One trim-level caveat is that some helpful safety equipment is reserved for higher trims.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.01% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines standard all-wheel drive with a Top Safety Pick+ rating and a 10/10 expert safety score.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $17,619, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,166 average.
- It is a spacious, family-focused three-row SUV with standard all-wheel drive and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,221, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,166 average.
- It adds newly standard safety features to an already spacious, utility-focused three-row SUV.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and inventory, the 2020 is the most straightforward choice. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 gives you a lower entry price, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer model-year updates and are willing to pay more.
