CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Nissan Versa
overall

Summary
With 696 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,319, 26.9% of 2020 Nissan Versas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Nissan Versa 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
66.2% of 2020 Versa models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Versa stands out as a budget-minded small car that feels more substantial than its price tag might suggest. Nissan says the all-new Versa costs a couple of thousand dollars more than last year’s version, but the added expense is justified by improved infotainment, better safety tech, and a livelier ride. That combination gives it a stronger appeal than a bare-bones economy car, especially for buyers who want value without feeling like they are giving up every modern convenience.
It also earns points for standard advanced safety features, which is a notable advantage in this class. At the same time, it is not trying to hide its compromises: performance is fairly pedestrian, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the 2020 Nissan Versa’s mix of value, comfort, technology, and fuel efficiency makes it a compelling choice for shoppers focused on keeping costs down while still getting a car that feels thoughtfully equipped.

Best value for the money especially on SR version. Comfortable ride n seats fuel efficient engine with much much more reliable cvt hands down. The car has so much technology that is a steal and even thoughtful ones . First new car option is perfect. Its much more attractive looks is perfect on SR. While its not an Maxima in performance its just right for daily commute. One thing I recommend is to swap out rear drums for rotors or brakes like the front. Its just my opinion in terms of improving the stopping power. It takes so much pressure to stop it and long distance too.

I think it’s a great car for the money. Has all the features like the higher end model vehicles does. Drives great handles, great and great on gas. The 2020 Vesra is a huge improvement.

Is the 2020 Nissan Versa reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a car that feels dependable for daily use, with owners repeatedly calling out its value, comfort, and fuel efficiency. That kind of feedback matters because it suggests you can count on it to deliver the basics without feeling stripped down.
The expert review also describes the Versa as a better car than the one it replaces, with a more substantial feel and improved overall execution. On the ownership side, the main risk for used buyers is making sure the car has been maintained well, since budget cars can be more sensitive to deferred upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because this model is budget-focused, condition matters a lot: a clean, well-kept example is much easier to recommend than one with hidden wear or accident damage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S is the most basic version, with steel wheels, cloth seating, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, remote keyless entry, push-button start, and manual seat adjustments. The SV adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors with integrated turn signals, upgraded cloth, an armrest, and a better infotainment setup, while the SR adds 17-inch alloys, fog lights, a dark-chrome grille, automatic climate control, and passive-entry convenience. The S is the bare-bones choice, while the SV is the best-value pick.
- Powertrain: The Versa uses a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with 122 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. You can get a 5-speed manual on the S or a CVT, which is standard on the SV and SR. The CVT is the better all-around choice if you want easier daily driving and stronger highway manners.
- Safety package: Standard driver-assistance features include automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. You also get a reversing camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and Easy Fill Tire Alert. These features are standard across the lineup.
- Infotainment: Every trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, Siri Eyes Free, and a hands-free text-messaging assistant. The SV adds NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a more advanced digital instrument display.
- Fuel efficiency: With the manual transmission, it returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, and 30 combined. With the CVT, it returns 32/40/35.
Which 2020 Nissan Versa trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Versa is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, and SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the cheapest way into the Versa, but it is very basic. You get the core safety tech, a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and push-button start, yet the overall setup is sparse enough that it is hard to recommend unless your budget is extremely tight.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, heated mirrors, upgraded cloth, an armrest, NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a more useful digital instrument display, giving you the strongest mix of price and equipment.
- SR: This is the most upscale version, with 17-inch alloys, fog lights, a dark-chrome grille, automatic climate control, and passive entry. It makes sense if you want the most features and a more polished feel.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the key driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Versa?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 692 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,839, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Versa's resale value?
The current average of $11,281 sits slightly below last year's $12,047.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can be good news if you are buying now but less favorable if you are planning to sell soon. If you own one, the current trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, so resale value will depend more on condition, mileage, and trim than on market momentum alone.
For a future seller, the key is to preserve the car's appeal by keeping maintenance current and avoiding cosmetic neglect. Well-kept examples should still attract budget-conscious shoppers, especially because the model has strong value and satisfaction appeal.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Versa safe?
The 2020 Nissan Versa earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard driver-assistance equipment includes automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. It also includes a reversing camera, front- and side-impact airbags, and Easy Fill Tire Alert.
That standard safety content is a major strength for a budget small car, and it helps the Versa stand out if you want modern crash-avoidance tech without moving up to a pricier class.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Versa or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model stands out for its standard advanced safety features and improved infotainment, which make it feel more substantial than its price suggests.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety tech, and everyday livability, the 2020 is the one to target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you should focus on the best-condition example you can find rather than chasing the cheapest listing, because the market still rewards clean, well-equipped cars.
