Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Nissan Sentra 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Nissan Sentra stands out by making a compact sedan feel more upscale than basic transportation usually does. Nissan describes it as redefining basic to no longer mean bad, and the car’s eighth-generation redesign gives it the look of a larger, more luxurious vehicle. It also brings major upgrades in style, technology, and driving dynamics, which helps explain why it feels like more than just an entry-level sedan.
For buyers, the 2020 Sentra’s appeal is straightforward: it offers excellent value for money, standard advanced safety features, and stylish design. That combination makes it easy to recommend to shoppers who want a well-equipped compact car without stretching their budget. The main tradeoff is performance, which is described as fairly pedestrian, so drivers looking for strong acceleration will likely find it less exciting than its appearance suggests.

Reviewed a 2020 Nissan SV FWD on Oct 25, 2023
Ive been very pleased with my 2015 Altima, so I looked to Nissan again when I decided to move up to a later model with the latest safety features. I found that the Sentra, starting with the 2020 model, has close to the same safety features of the Altima at a better price point. I bought a low mileage 2020 Sentra SV with the Premium Package to get the leather seats and other comforts, and Ive been very pleased with the car so far. The 2.0 liter engine isnt quite as responsive as the Altimas 2.5, but certainly adequate with the CVT transmission and very economical.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Nissan Sentra?
At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a close inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and any signs of prior repair. Because the Sentra’s appeal is tied to its value and safety equipment, condition matters a lot when you’re comparing similar-priced listings.
Pay extra attention to how the car drives in traffic and at highway speeds, since the powertrain is tuned more for smoothness than excitement. Also make sure the cabin electronics and driver-assistance features work as expected, since those are part of the Sentra’s value proposition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The mid-level SV stands out for adding a larger touchscreen, expanded instrument-panel display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, WiFi, dual-zone climate control, proximity-entry key, adaptive cruise control, remote engine start, and a full suite of driver-assist features. The SV Premium Package adds 17-inch wheels, quilted tan leather, and brighter LED headlights, while the SR adds 18-inch wheels and fog lights.
- Powertrain: A 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 149 horsepower and 146 pound-feet of torque is paired with a CVT and front-wheel drive. The setup is smooth and responsive, but acceleration tapers off after 30 mph.
- Safety package: Every Sentra trim includes forward and reverse emergency braking, pedestrian detection for the front, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, rear side airbags, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and a driver attention monitor.
- Infotainment: Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and WiFi come standard on the SV, along with two more USB ports including USB-C and larger screens.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA-rated fuel economy is 29 mpg city, 39 highway, and 33 combined. The SR delivers 1 mpg less in the city and combined and 2 less on the highway.
Which 2020 Nissan Sentra trim should I buy?
The 2020 Nissan Sentra is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SV, SR.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, but the Sentra’s strongest value story starts to come together as you move up from here. If you want the lowest price and can live with a more basic setup, it gets you into the redesigned Sentra without stretching your budget.
- SV: This is the best-value trim. It adds the larger screens, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, WiFi, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, remote engine start, and a full suite of driver-assist features, making it the sweet spot for most shoppers.
- SR: Choose this if you want the sportier-looking trim with 18-inch wheels and fog lights. It’s the style-forward choice, but the SV still makes more sense for value-focused buyers.
Every trim includes the same core safety package, including forward and reverse emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, rear side airbags, knee airbags, and a driver attention monitor.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Nissan Sentra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,877 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.69% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,095, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $14,887 sits slightly below last year's $15,457.
That price movement suggests the Sentra has softened enough to create a better entry point for used buyers, but it also means future sellers may face some pressure if the market stays soft. If you buy well now, you may be starting from a more favorable basis than someone who bought when prices were higher.
The Sentra’s strong value story and owner satisfaction should help support demand, especially for clean, well-equipped examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Nissan Sentra safe?
The 2020 Nissan Sentra has not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but CarGurus expects top ratings in all categories.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Nissan makes safety a major selling point here by including rear side airbags, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, forward and reverse emergency braking, pedestrian detection for the front, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, auto high beams, and a driver attention monitor on every trim.
That standard equipment list is unusually strong for the class, and it helps explain why the Sentra scores so well in expert safety evaluation. The main caveat is that there are no official crash-test results to lean on yet.
Should I buy a 2020 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.69% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 redesign brings a more upscale look, stronger tech, and better driving dynamics.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $15,398, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $14,887 average.
- It builds on the 2020 redesign with a more polished feel and competitive safety, technology, and fuel economy.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a well-equipped safety package. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model-year listing, the 2021 is the cleaner follow-up path for buyers who want the same basic formula with a slightly higher asking price.
