CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 577 currently listed for sale and an average price of $48,136.00, 33.6% of 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.9 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury sedan that treats technology and engineering as core selling points rather than add-ons. In this generation, Mercedes gave the car the second generation of its MBUX infotainment interface, and buyers could opt for up to five screens on board. Mercedes also said there was a new 3D driver display system that uses eye tracking to create the illusion of depth. The car’s appeal is reinforced by its standard all-wheel-drive launch lineup and by the fact that Mercedes continued to use the S-Class as a place to debut advanced features.
Performance is another major part of the 2020 S-Class identity. At first, Mercedes-Benz offered the S 500 4Matic and the S 580 4Matic variants, both with standard all-wheel drive. The S 500 used a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to produce 429 horsepower and 384 lb-ft of torque, while the S 580 used a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with mild hybrid drive that produced 496 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. The lineup also included the S 580e plug-in hybrid in late 2022, but for 2020 the car’s distinction was its blend of strong power, high-end tech, and sedan-only body style. Buyers should also expect the usual S-Class tradeoff: it is expensive, and upkeep can be costly over time.

Features are good not as much tech obviously as newer models but I'm good with that. Touchscreen feature i kinda miss , but I'll get over that. Great values for this car $37K..42k miles 1 owner ! Well taken care of..ride is so silky smooth , great space...will add for this size car trunk is rather small..used the space for rear seating..roomy vehicle..Love it !

I think this car stands above all others in pure luxury, comfort and features. I feel buying pre owned allowed me to experience the enjoyment of this car at a fraction of its original price tag.

How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $47,771 |
| Year-Round Low | $46,780.24 |
| Year-Round High | $54,845.62 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $54,800 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −12.83% |
Prices have softened 12.83% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 592 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $46,780.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — 4.9/5 is a strong user rating, and it lines up with the themes owners repeat most often: a luxurious feel, impressive performance, and a very comfortable ride. The review summary also points to advanced features as a major draw, which fits this model year’s role as a technology showcase. For you, that means the 2020 S-Class makes the most sense if you want a flagship luxury sedan that prioritizes comfort, tech, and presence. 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.9/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with comfort and advanced features standing out over time. That said, the same feedback notes that maintenance costs can be high, so long-term ownership risk is less about basic satisfaction and more about keeping up with premium upkeep.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was cosmetic or structural. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, suspension, and signs of deferred maintenance. Because this is a luxury sedan with advanced systems, condition matters as much as mileage when you compare listings.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop, but the best examples still deserve quick attention.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 592 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 73.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $46,780.24, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $47,771 sits slightly below last year's $54,800.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means resale value will depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and how clean its history is. Well-kept examples should hold up better than average because shoppers in this segment tend to reward condition, features, and overall presentation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 73.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $60,248, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $47,771 average.
- It brings a redesigned cabin with more advanced infotainment and updated powertrains.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2020 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction and meaningful deal availability. If you’re willing to pay more for the newer redesign and its updated tech, the 2021 is the better secondary path for buyers who want the latest version of the S-Class experience.
