How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class cost?

Prices have softened 4.26% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 668 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class earns a 7.2/10 expert rating, and its appeal comes from the way it blends premium materials, true off-road capability, and surprisingly good on-road manners.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

It is a strong fit if you want a luxury SUV with serious character and a distinctive old-school presence, but it is also a poor value for money and can feel a little too rugged for the money. The trade-offs are clear: you get premium interior materials and capability, but you also give up some refinement for the price.

The market still shows 33.1% good or great deals, which suggests there are worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class reliable?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is presented as a rugged, luxury-focused SUV with a body-on-frame design and serious off-road hardware, which supports its durability-minded character.

Its performance notes point to a vehicle that feels stable on the road despite its height and weight, with precise steering and a suspension setup that helps control body roll. The same hardware also gives it genuine off-road credibility, including low range and locking differentials.

Mercedes also includes a maintenance perk in the ownership experience: the first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the long-term risk is that this is a complex, expensive SUV to own, so repairs and upkeep can be costly if prior maintenance was neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a high-priced SUV with complex equipment. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the truck has been maintained consistently.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base G550 already brings premium interior materials, standard leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and 64-color ambient lighting, while the AMG Line package adds flared wheel arches and a front push bar.
• Powertrain: The G550 uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, paired with standard four-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic transmission. The AMG G63 adds a more powerful twin-turbo V8 with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.
• Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Pre Safe adds seatbelt tightening, window closing, and front-passenger seat adjustment, and Pre Safe Sound is also included.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio with a six-month trial. A second 12.3-inch screen is available, and the system does not use a touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the G550 at 13 mpg city and 17 highway.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: G550, AMG G63.

Here's the short version:

• G550: This is the better-value choice if you want the core G-Class experience with the standard twin-turbo V8, four-wheel drive, and the full off-road hardware without paying AMG money.
• AMG G63: Choose this if you want the most powerful version and are willing to pay for the extra performance and exclusivity.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, with adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

The market looks moderate for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 668 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.26% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $118,794, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

The current average of $118,794 sits slightly below last year's $124,079.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently today. If you sell later, the current trend may limit upside unless demand strengthens again. Even so, the G-Class's distinctive appeal can help it hold attention better than many luxury SUVs when it is well kept and properly documented.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class hasn’t received crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The G-Class gets a long list of safety features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. If all of those features can’t prevent a collision, Mercedes’ Pre Safe system tightens the seatbelts, closes windows, and adjusts the front-passenger seat to keep occupants in place. It also has a Pre Safe Sound function that plays a “pink noise” designed to limit hearing damage.

One caveat is that lane-keep assist had a few false alarms and could intervene aggressively and unexpectedly.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.26% compared with last year.
• It combines premium materials with true off-road capability and surprisingly good handling.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $104,943, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $118,794 average.
• It delivers a newly redesigned, upscale take on the G-Class.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $135,286, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $118,794 average.
• It adds a more sophisticated powertrain and broader modern refinement.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the right pick if you want the classic G-Class formula with strong character and a more favorable market position than the newer model. If price matters most, the 2019 is the smarter value play; if you want the newer-year upgrade path, the 2021 is the better step up.
