How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class cost?

Prices have softened 4.43% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 661 listings available, which gives you a meaningful pool to compare before you buy.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class earns a 7.17/10 expert rating, and its appeal comes from the mix of premium materials, true off-road capability, and surprisingly good on-road manners.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

It works best for you if you want a luxury SUV with serious character and a distinctive old-school presence. The trade-offs are clear: it is poor value for money, and it can feel a little too rugged for the money.

With 35.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class reliable?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is presented as a rugged, luxury SUV with a strong feature set and a design built around durability and capability.

Its off-road hardware and body-on-frame construction support the sense that it is engineered for hard use, while the expert evaluation also notes that it handles surprisingly well on pavement. The performance write-up adds that the G550 felt rock solid on highways, even with its tall stance and broad sides.

Mercedes also includes a long list of protective features, and the Pre Safe system adds another layer by tightening seatbelts, closing windows, and adjusting the front-passenger seat if a collision seems likely. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.

For used buyers, the long-term ownership risk is less about basic toughness and more about whether a heavily used example has been maintained carefully and treated gently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a premium SUV like this can hide expensive past damage behind a clean-looking listing. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the suspension, steering behavior, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard off-road. Pay close attention to interior wear, since the cabin materials are a major part of what you are paying for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin emphasizes premium materials, with standard leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and 64-color ambient lighting. The AMG Line package adds flared wheel arches and a front push bar, while Nappa leather, wood or carbon fiber trim, a heated steering wheel, and massaging front seats are available.
• Powertrain: The G550 uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 with 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque, while the AMG G63 uses a higher-output twin-turbo V8 with 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel drive and a nine-speed automatic are standard, and the G550 is described as quick and capable on pavement.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Pre Safe can tighten the seatbelts, close windows, and adjust the front-passenger seat, and Pre Safe Sound is also included. Lane-keep assist can be overly aggressive.
• Infotainment: The standard setup includes a 12.3-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM with a six-month trial. A second 12.3-inch screen is available, and the system uses a Comand controller rather than a touchscreen.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the G550 at 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 14 combined.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: G550, AMG G63.

Here's the short version:

• G550: This is the better-value choice if you want the core G-Class experience without paying AMG money. It still gives you the twin-turbo V8, standard 4WD, serious off-road hardware, and the full luxury cabin, so it covers the essentials well.
• AMG G63: Choose this if you want the most powerful version and are willing to pay for it. It adds substantially more horsepower and torque, and it is the right pick if performance matters more than value.

The safety package is strong across the lineup, but lane-keep assist can be overly aggressive.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you should shop carefully and compare listings.

• Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 661 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 78.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $120,791, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

The current average of $120,791 sits slightly below last year's $126,391.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. If you plan to sell later, the G-Class's distinctive image and limited supply may help support demand, but the current trend shows buyers are still getting some leverage. For a future seller, condition and history will matter a lot because shoppers in this segment are paying for a premium example, not just the badge.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

The 2020 G-Class hasn’t received crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Mercedes also adds Pre Safe, which can tighten the seatbelts, close windows, and adjust the front-passenger seat, plus Pre Safe Sound to help limit hearing damage.

One caveat is that lane-keep assist had a few false alarms and could intervene too aggressively.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 78.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• The 2020 keeps the G-Class's rugged luxury character while still handling surprisingly well.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $104,781, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $120,791 average.
• It introduced the redesign and delivers the same distinctive luxury-off-road formula.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $136,132, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $120,791 average.
• It adds a more sophisticated powertrain and modernized feel.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price and the classic G-Class experience, the 2020 is the primary path to consider. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2019 is the smarter value play, while the 2021 makes sense only if you want to spend more for the newer-year premium.
