How much does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class cost?

Prices have softened 4.81% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 633 listings available, which gives you a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class a good car?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class earns a 7.2/10 from our experts, and its appeal comes from the way it blends rugged character with a luxury cabin and true off-road capability.

The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.

It stands out for premium interior materials, surprisingly good handling, and an old-school presence that feels unlike a conventional luxury SUV. The trade-offs are a poor value proposition and a cabin that can feel a little too rugged for the money.

For shoppers who want character, capability, and an upscale interior more than everyday practicality, it fits the brief well. The market reflects that appeal, with 34.3% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class reliable?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is presented as a durable, body-on-frame SUV with serious off-road hardware and a luxury cabin, but it is also a high-cost vehicle to own.

Its performance notes point to strong pavement manners for a vehicle of this type, plus standard four-wheel drive, low range, and locking differentials that reinforce its rugged engineering. The cost-effectiveness notes also make clear that this is not a value-focused purchase, especially once options are added.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that you may be paying a lot for a vehicle whose ownership costs and upkeep expectations are closer to a six-figure specialty SUV than a mainstream luxury model.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the SUV was used or maintained. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the suspension, steering, electronics, and interior wear, since this is a high-priced vehicle with a lot of equipment. Focus on overall condition and whether the truck feels as tight and well-kept as its price suggests.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is loaded with standard luxury touches like leather upholstery, heated front and rear seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and 64-color ambient lighting, while available upgrades include Nappa leather, wood or carbon fiber trim, a heated steering wheel, and massaging front seats. The AMG Line package adds flared wheel arches and a front push bar, but the base setup already delivers a premium feel.
• Powertrain: The G-Class comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, 4WD, and a nine-speed automatic transmission. It is tuned for strong on-road performance for an off-road SUV, while still keeping serious trail hardware in reserve.
• Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Pre Safe can tighten the seatbelts, close the windows, and adjust the front-passenger seat, and Pre Safe Sound is also included. Lane-keep assist can be overly aggressive, so that system deserves a close test drive.
• Infotainment: You get a standard 12.3-inch infotainment display, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM satellite radio. A second 12.3-inch digital instrument screen is available, but the system uses a controller rather than a touchscreen, and the interface can feel slow or awkward.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the G550 at 13 mpg city, 17 highway, and 14 combined.

Which 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is offered in 2 trim levels: G550, AMG G63.

Here's the short version:

• G550: This is the better-value choice if you want the core G-Class experience without paying extra for the AMG model’s added performance. It still gives you the signature design, luxury cabin, and serious off-road hardware, so it is the trim that best captures what makes the G-Class special.
• AMG G63: Choose this if you want the most powerful and most expensive version, with a souped-up twin-turbo V8 and much quicker acceleration. It is the enthusiast pick, but the content makes clear that the G-Class already feels expensive, so this trim is for buyers who care most about performance and exclusivity.

The safety package is broad across the lineup, but lane-keep assist can be overly aggressive.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you have room to shop carefully rather than rush.

• Deal availability: 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 633 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $118,493, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class's resale value?

The current average of $118,493 sits slightly below last year's $124,475.

That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means you should expect depreciation pressure to remain a factor unless the vehicle is especially well kept or unusually desirable.

Because the G-Class is a niche luxury SUV with strong character, condition and mileage will matter a lot when you go to resell it. A clean history and strong presentation should help protect value better than average wear.

Is the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class safe?

The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class hasn’t received crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, parking assist, and a driver-attention monitor. Mercedes also includes Pre Safe, which can tighten the seatbelts, close windows, and adjust the front-passenger seat, plus Pre Safe Sound to help limit hearing damage.

One important caveat is that lane-keep assist can react too aggressively and unexpectedly, so you should test that system carefully on a drive.

Should I buy a 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.81% compared with last year.
• It blends rugged character with luxury materials and surprisingly good handling.

Consider the 2019 if:

• At $105,038, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $118,493 average.
• It offers a similarly upscale cabin with strong character and off-road credibility.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $135,557, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $118,493 average.
• It adds a more sophisticated powertrain and technology package.

The bottom line: The 2020 is the sweet spot if you want the classic G-Class personality with a more favorable used-market price than the 2021. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2019 is the better value path, while the 2021 makes sense if you want the newer-feeling version and can pay more.

How does the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class compare to the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover?

2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class:

• Pros: Premium interior materials, Off-road capability, Handles surprisingly well.
• Cons: Poor value for money, Overly aggressive lane-keep assist, A little too rugged for the money.

2020 Land Rover Range Rover:

• Pros: Stylish design, Multiple powertrain options.
• Cons: Unintuitive technology.

Our experts score the 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class 7.2/10 and the 2020 Land Rover Range Rover 8.3/10.

The G-Class is the more characterful choice, with stronger off-road identity and a cabin that feels special. The Range Rover looks more stylish, offers more powertrain variety, and scores higher overall, but its technology is less intuitive. If you want the most distinctive presence, the G-Class stands out; if you want the better all-around luxury SUV, the Range Rover has the edge.
